Mermaid artist back again. Want to be drawn?

I drew a few members from here before and quite a few people were enthused by the idea, so I thought I would put out another call since thing have changed for me a bit. Originally I was doing a mermaid anthology of stories with illustrations by myself. I have around 15 drawn. I've since decided to do away with any text and simply make it a book of mermaid illustrations--no stories. (The quality just wasn't there in most of the submissions I received.) That means I'll be doing a TON of mermaid illustrations over the next year, in fact the goal is to do a minimum of one a week -- 52 or more drawings! Whoa! So for those that didn't get drawn last time, the odds are certainly ever in your favor now.

here's some specifics.
1) I can't pay you. I wish I could, but in my experience these sef-published books tend to not sell. I'm a starving freelance artist. Bummer, I know. However...

2) You will get a high res jpg of what I've drawn that you can use however you may (or may not ) like for any kind of self-promotion.

3) If I like the final art, and if you do too, you get to be in a book.
Yay! Exciting? Probably not but it is something. I'll also credit you under the illustration as "Mermaid Jane" unless your name isn't Jill--obviously. And your location.

4) I need hi res and clear photos to work from, since you won't be coming to Iowa any time soon to pose. Iowa--I know right? Ugh.

5) I'm most looking for interesting poses, settings, and creative costuming. Things I don't see as often. You all are the experts, I just draw the pictures.

6) I'm pretty sure I'll only draw mermaids as opposed to mermen. I've drawn a few of the guys in the past with varying degrees of success, so I won't say absolutely not, but it's not likely. Just being honest.

7.) Obviously I can't use every picture submitted. And I can't necessarily give an idea of what I might be looking for, I'll know it when I see it. That's just how the creative process works. Please don't be hurt if I don't select you for this. This is difficult for me, too.

8) yes, the art will be in black and white in that detailed pen and ink style that I do. I know people tend to love color, but it's problematic for me on several levels, mostly because of costs to self-publish a full color book.

9) No nudity or that sort of thing. I'm looking to draw a book that mermaid fans of all ages could view and enjoy.

10) Last time around, a lot of mermaids sent me to a website or Facebook page of theirs and said "if you see anything that works, let me know." That actually works quite well. Just please send me directly to the page of images you have so I don't have to hunt for the photos.

Hey, David. What a lovely offer! I would love a sketch. I think this is my favorite Mermaid Galene photo. The seahorses are, of course, photoshopped in, but they are my own seahorses. Sadly, the one on the left, seahorse Galene, passed over to the Rainbow Lagoon last spring. But her widower, Zephyr, is alive and well.

Hey there! I'd love to see what you could do with my mer-self, if you're interested! I generally do non-traditional, tribal-style makeup/facepaint, and I have a shaved head with bangs/front lock (I used to have a dreadhawk, and before that it was a blue and silver mohawk... so feel free to take your pick of hair style, though I'd prefer the shaved head because it's what I have now and I think it looks good on me). I also have what I would consider "creative costuming" - my tail is not of a usual style, more like a Pirates of the Caribbean-style tail.

There's some interesting things here. The photo you posed is a bit like the one I drew of Raina as far as the pose. However I like the idea of the seahorses, which I've not drawn before. Also, the addition of your husband with that telescope (is that what it is called?) sparks potential ideas, but I don't have anything just yet. I have a year to give it some thought though.

The photo in your signature is the most interesting visual to me. In part because of the wings and the hair style. Not sure how I'd handle drawing the striped tail but it ould be pretty cool. However, all the photos I could find were quite a bit too low resolution for me work from.

I'd probably work with this. I think. The thing is, I know myself well enough, I'd want to use the shaved hairstyle with the bangs, however-- I'd want to lengthene it there in the front. Don't know if you're cool with that or not since it would be some pretty dramatic artistic license. Just let me know.

I'd totally be down for that - I'm growing that front part out anyways, so I can do cool things like braid it into a crown around my head, or make an anglerfish-inspired hairstyle! I'd love to see what you do with it, artistic license is what makes it fun! :D

The pics are nice and clear. The colors are great, by the way. Of course I'm working in black and white. The one on top is too "posed" I think for what I'm doing. The bottom one a little less so. That looks like you in the avatar? That would work a lot better for what I'm doing. I could swap the pool out for coral and ocean waves... if you had that in higher res, or something similar?
