Hi all!
I went out in public for the first time in my tail yesterday to a beach for a photoshoot. I had some great experiences with younger kids who thought I was real and it brought me to the question-- what are your favorite moments/stories that you've had while being a mermaid? (Let me know if a thread like this already exists- I searched but may have missed something)
For example, yesterday I was hanging out in the tide pools while my friend/photographer was taking pictures and a huge group of tourists walked by and were pointing and waving and shouting "MERMAID!!" Later, there was a little girl who was very shy and holding on to her father, who encouraged her to go up and talk to me. I introduced myself in my mermaid name, Mermaid Opal, asked her what her name was and if she had seen any cool sea creatures today. There was another little girl who came up to me when I was in a different spot, in a little grotto/rocky outcrop, and I asked her similar questions and then got to show her a starfish that was on the rock next to me. I told her to look out for my octopus friend who liked to live in the tide pools, (i had seen one there months ago) and not 20 minutes later the octopus was spotted hanging out in a pool about 15 feet from where I was! There was a brother/sister pair that looked really excited to see me, and even the adults were all smiling. Being the first time I went out as a mermaid, it was a really gratifying experience! I love kids and it was an amazing feeling to be part of the magic for them!
Share your stories! I'd love to hear them!

The second time I decided to go for a week day swim, as it was very hot that day. I only brought my MerFin...
There I was splashing in the shallows of the Wave Pool and there was a little girl, about 2 or 3 years old with her Mum. Every time she looked at me, I waved my fin at her, then when her Mum looked over the fin went under the water. This went on for several minutes as they got ready to go into the water, her Mum's back was to me and the kid was facing sideways, she kept pointing and half waving, and I kept waving the fin at her.
Finally, they come into the water, the Mum says, "Hello Mermaid". I smile. The little girl swam over and I showed her my fin, I says, "Do you want to touch it?" She was pretty shy at first. Her Mum said she was very excited to see a real mermaid. I reply, "If she thinks I'm real now, wait till you see her reaction when I sew up my tail!" Then the kid let go of her Mum, she had a back float on, even though we were in the shallow end I said, "Swim back to Mummy" cos I'm not responsible for kids when they leave their parents even for a short distance. After awhile its cat and mouse game in the shallow end with me and the girl.
When they stop for a lunch break, the girl comes back into the water without her floatie, and I could hear the Mum say to sit on the side. So I goes and sit next to the girl and flap my fin in the water and say, "Now its your turn" She tries. Then I go back into the water and tickle her feet with my fin. Then her Mum calls her to have lunch and I swim away.
An hour later, I see the girl standing at the edge of the Wave pool, her Mum just finishing packing up and was waiting for her. When I looked at her, she waved at me. She had a huge smile on her face the entire swim session!

So whenever I am offered a drink at parties, I always say "water". Some will immediately laugh, or it will register 5 minutes after that a mermaid was asking for water. Also, I only have water at parties.

This past summer at the local swimming pool a couple of girls came by to say hi to me while I was swimming with my tail. They both were old enough to know that mermaids do not exist, but they were ecstatic with the "costume", wanted to know where I bought it, etc. They were very nice and very friendly. I asked them if they were sisters. One of them said, "No, we're friends". "Best friends", said the other. "Would it be OK for me to swim with you guys a bit?", I asked. They looked at each other, and one says: "No, no, that is not how it works. It is us who ask you, "Please, PLEASE, come swim with us!!" It really made my day. We had a fun afternoon together :)
A couple of summers ago I went to the beach with my first tail right after it was finished to have a photoshoot. The beach was waaayy too rough to swim in, so I decided to use the hotel pool to stretch my fins! Well, on the last day I was in the pool and I hear a high pitched screech and a little girl yelling MERRRMAAAIIIDDD over and over again from the parking lot right next to the pool. It was adorable! My mom said I probably made her week, and I couldn't agree more!

I was in my very unfinished looking neoprene/spandex tail by the creek and this little boy came up an asked how I was moving my fin (I have a oceanica monofin). I told him I had bones down there just like he has in his feet. He promptly grabbed my flipper, picked it up and bent it (thank god I have a floppy rubber fin!!) then dropped it and ran off screaming "SHE'S REAL!! THERES BONES IN HER FLIPPER!!!" The biker guy begin me chuckled and was like "that's how you tell, of course, the bones in the flipper" we all had a good laugh.

I was working as one of the Merwranglers for Merbellas when they were in Michigan for the Ren Fest a while back. As one particularly large group was walking away, one little girl pulled her parents aside and pointed back at the tank, exclaiming proudly, "See?! Mermaids are real because God made them!"
It was frickin adorable and we quoted her the rest of the weekend.

Another fave story... After I exited the pool and was looking to find a nice sunny picnic table to sit at. A lady came up behind me and startled me.
Lady: "Excuse me, where did you find that?" Here eyes were so big! Like a little girl's when they first see me with amazement.
Me: "On the internet"
Lady: "That is gorgeous! My daughter saw you swimming in it and came back to tell me, "I know what I want for Christmas!""
Me: "I'm selling this. Its too small for me."
Before I can mention the size, she goes off to find her daughter. Then I take the tail skin off...
She comes back with her daughter and two other girls. Daughter tries the fin on, its too small for her, she's a size 10.5. I also mention that if she knows anyone interested in a mermaid fin, tell them a lady at the pool is selling one. We start chatting, girl says her boyfriend would love one too but he doesn't want to be a mermaid. I say, just trim the fin to whatever shape he wants, then he can be a merman! We all laugh. She says, "his feet are bigger". Then I say when and what time I'm at the pool. The Mum writes a note on her iphone and they go back to their swimming.
Turns out daughter and friends are part of the Waterpolo Team that practices every Saturday, and they've all been watching me since I started swimming there!
Happy happy! More mermaids for the kids to stare and scream at!
