So, some huge things are in the works for me, and I really had to share because I am so happy and hopeful I feel like Im about ready to burst!
I am graduating with my BEd this May, where I live it takes 6-7 years to get all the training to become a teacher and because of our high standards we end up able to teach pretty much anywhere in the world. My first degree is in child and youth development so it sorta gives me that extra edge so that with both degrees I can basically do any job that involves kids short of being a pediatrition lol.
Well, a few of you I emailed about this but now that it's looking more and more like a possibility I just have to share. I have an opportunity to go to Roatan, Honduras as Raina as well as my teacher self upon graduation. When I go there I'll be teaching literacy, ESL, about the environment, and helping with infant care. I'll be staying in a resort that has been converted. Between now and then I'll be raising funds so I can help send kids to school. Only 1/4 kids get to go but it only costs 50$ to send a kid to school for 2 years. I have several organizations that are interested in having me go it's just a matter of whether or not an internship will be offered to me (the Canadian International Development Agency has yet to announce the available intern-ships) which all depends on the budget they get allotted. And internship just means I'd have much of my expenses to get there paid for and accommodations when I stay there. I also has the opportunity to go as a volunteer under sponsorship which is basically the same thing. Both would be different amounts of time but I could stay for up to 6-8 months at a time If I wanted to/was able.
I am so thrilled with this opportunity I feel like I get to have this perfect match of being Raina but also using all of my skills and education. There are currently no jobs in my field in my province. There is a teacher surplus and most teachers who are new (and even some who have been around for a few years) will not have meaningful employment- they will be lucky enough to sub. I don't want to sit around Halifax hoping on the off chance I might sub one day a week. I feel have a lot to offer as a classroom teacher but until there is a demand for jobs it simply wont happen. This is my chance to do something huge with Raina. To give back, to make an actual difference in the lives of children. I'll also have some PR opportunities to share the work I do both while I'm there and when I get back.
As far as the recreation side of being a mermaid Roatan is on one of the most beautiful coral reefs in the world. I could go swim with wild dolphins, hang out with groups of iguanas the way you see pigeons in the city, live in a warmer climate for once in my life (that sorta blows my mind. Could you imagine- a tan Raina? Haha!) and my boyfriend has enough vacation days and free airplane tickets to visit me several times while I'm there. :) I'd be keeping a video blog but I think I'd also keep a photoblog too.
Ever since this got planted in my head I just feel like I've been struck by lightning. I've been researching non stop and I am even dreaming about it.
There's a contest I'll be entering to try and win 1000$ toward this- and you can help me by pledging to do something for the environment (not even money! just a good deed) I'll be filling you in on that later in the month. But I guess in the mean time I'll just be updating you with pics and links here.

So fins crossed! it's really looking like this may happen for me. It wouldn't be a long term career or anything (well, I shouldnt say that because really who knows?) but it would be such an amazing opportunity for Raina to change some lives
