View Full Version : Fish Otherkin or Therians?

Hi there, I'm a long-time draconic otherkin but within the past couple of years I've found myself identifying with fish very strongly(also with other life that lives within and around water). I identify as an aquatic shifter that mainly assumes the form of a draconic rain and water serpent, fish, cetacean and occasionally a quadrupedal winged sea dragon. I don't identify much with mermaids, anthropomorphism really isn't my thing but I very much enjoy the idea of monofins.

I'm curious who else here identifies as Otherkin and I'm also curious if there are others like me who identify as a non anthropomorphic sea creature.

Pleased to meet all of you and thanks!

I wouldn't call mermaids a form of anthropomorphism. They naturally have a resemblance to homo sapiens on top (well, naturally in legends, anyway) and fish on the bottom rather than being an animal recreated into a form resembling human stature. And no, I don't identify as anything other than human, which I think covers most of the mermaids on this site, though who knows? You might find more people to bond with on a forum for otherkin, however, since this forum is for people who like to play mermaid and you stated you're not into mermaids. Not trying to chase you away, just stating that you might find more of what you're looking for on a site specific to otherkin.

Someone started a thread on the subject of therians last year. It's here:
http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?6529-Are-You-quot-Otherkin-quot-a-quot-Therian-quot-or-a-Spiritual-quot-Merperson-i-e-a-quot-real-quot-mermaid-quot

There aren't a lot of responses there, but since this is a mermaid forum and not an otherkin or therian forum, that is probably why.

Actually, Seavanna, at least there used to be a couple people who identified as otherkin-esque sea life on here, though I admit I haven't noticed many of them posting recently (my presence has also diminished as work keeps me busy of late, though, so just because I haven't seen them doesn't mean they're not here).

I think more of them identified as "scaly furries" than of otherkin, however... someone did post a really impressive sea Dragon costume or fursuit on here once.

There are several mers on here who see their "mersona" as a waterdragon or somesuch, rather than the classical mermaid.

I see my mer-self as a seaserpent, that can also appear as a Naga, or mermaid with a snake tail.

Keep in mind though that both forms are known in traditional folklore, some more than others.
Many "mermen" are described as fishmonsters rather than humanlike ;)

I read up about the definition of otherkin, and while I would love to join an active community, I'm not sure if I could deal with the "less serious" members of that subculture.

My dreams took place in another world since I was a small child. My mother was out of her wits with worry because I kept asking why the "day world" looked so different from the "nightworld" I experienced when asleep.
And that was decades before TV and internet lol.

I also take the whole Gaia and druidic concepts very seriously, so when I'm on a board and someone asks "Are you an elf?? How many of you have pointy ears??", I feel tempted to reply, "yes, I am several elves even, and all of them max level!" :P

Sometimes I see live 3D unicorns in my sleep. Does that count?

Welcome to MerNetwork, MinimalistFish! :D I'm still not 100% sure what I am, but recently I've started to believe that I may be a seadragon otherkin— similar to you with the shifting, in a way, as I feel a strong connection to my mermaid persona and my tail is based off of my seadragon... I'm not what the word is? Identity? Spirit?

I'm glad to see another draconic here! :D

This is a tentative subject for me, but what the heck.

I've had very vivid dreams and.. Flashbacks?... Since a very young age of swimming through the open water and also of having a tail. Then again, I also believe in the concept of other plains of existence, like the metaphysical plain. Perhaps my astral body is of a merbeing? At least, that's what any reader or "psychic person" I've seen has told me. Either way.. Greetings MinimalistFish! It is pleasant to meet you ^.^

Disclaimer: I do not identify as scalie/furry
