You guys can hold your breath for a long time! Not sure how long I can hold mine, I haven't practiced in a longg time.. probably not too long but not too short haha

Keep in mind, we were both smokers at some point. If this helps any, I prepare by relaxing my whole body and clearing my mind. I slowly sip air (but not too much), hold it for about a minute, and slowly breath it out. Then my intervals increase until I can get it up to a couple minutes.

I'm sure you'll do fine. If Nerine and I can touch the bottom of the boil, you can too.

I have to admit that my comment was from the Percy Jackson Series of books. I won't have a tail tomorrow because I have to wait on the seamstress to make it. i hope we have a meet up sometime in late may because I will have one then. I can hold my breath for quite sometime, and it varies depending on what I'm doing. Right now I would be safe saying that I can't really say how long I can hold my breath. I can say that I can dolphin kick underwater a little over 25 yards without a breath without any fins of any kind. When I meet you guys, you have to compare your feet and hands to mine. Your eyes will open wide. I guess I'll meet you guys, and see what you all are like face to face. However, you won't see me in a tail, not yet. If we have another meet up over the summer, maybe.

Celeste and I got all of Dallas' contact information and are going to be getting pretty much everything he took. From talking to him afterward there is a ton of data to transfer and he may end up having to send dvds out with all the pictures and videos. If that is the case I have a disk burner and can make copies for everyone. At any rate... we will find a way to get yall those pictures.

Sorry about not getting back as quickly, but I've been out of it for a while. All that swimming took a lot out of me. It was cool being able to swim in a tail even though it didn't fit. If we have another event coming up, I would like it to be after I get my first tail.

On a side note, I told my mom about me being a merman because I needed her to know where I was going and for what reason I was going to the spring. I told her this mostly in case I ran into trouble driving, since I was driving there by myself. I come home after the event eager to tell my mom about what it was like mermaiding, and my sister walks into the kitchen from the garage after doing her laundry. She heard EVERYTHING. If that wasn't bad enough, when my mom's friend arrived at the house , I woke up, walked into the kitchen, and my mom brings up the mermaiding subject right as I reach the counter. She set up the conversation in a way that she would tell him if I didn't. So now, my mom, my sister, and my mom's friend knows I'm a merman. It wouldn't surprise me if my brother asleep in his room overheard the conversation and he knows. It seems that keeping this a secret is out of my hands now. If any of them say anything to someone else, everyone within the circle of people I know will know. I'm excited about our next meet up, and my mom wants to go to alexander springs next time we go there to kayak or paddle board. I guess I opened pandoras box, and I can't put back what already came out.

When we have another meet up even if it won't be the same as the one before, I'll be there, and I should have a tail then.

I honestly never think I can move so well in the water, but I guess I still impress people. I'm happy you thought I could swim so well, but I'm still not sure I could be as good as I could be. I'm also starting to think that my sinuses are too sensitive to pressure change for me to do a good job diving. Does anyone have any tips that might help?

Oh, when I went to buy a publix sub, the cashier thought I was lifeguarding all day. I just went with it.

This is the tail I got from fin fun, and it actually fits perfectly. The monofin fits too. Now I'm itching to try it out somewhere, but it's raining, and my pool is a pond frogs spawn in. I don't think I should go to the public pool because that's a little too close to home. I need another meet up to try it out.

P.S. My cat wanted to attack my tail while I took the picture.

My tail also came with a new monofin upgrade for free. Instead of a clear plastic thing, I got a tougher black monofin insert.

Okay guys, I'm back! Here's what's going on- Nerine, message me again. My inbox is clear. Marlin and I do have Dallas' contact info. He is going to be VERY busy over the next week editing all of the material he has from that day, so I'm not going to bother him until he's ready. He also said he wants to be our official videographer whenever we need him! (I think we should make him a tail).

As the weather consistantly stays warm, I'll be planning more impromptu trips to the spring, although I have nothing set in stone until I get my new tail.

The folks at Alexander Springs were VERY pleased to have all of us there that day and would love for us to do it again some time soon, and I know Dallas lives close by and is willing to do videography for Alexander springs, but I don't know about any other springs.

Marlin and a few other mers have suggested our next meetup at a more central location at Manatee Springs. Thoughts?

I can save the image in this thread to my computer and post it on facebook. The picture has everyone in it, and I want to make sure that if I post the image I do it with the consent of those in the photo. I don't have any way of taking a photo of myself in my tail, and I don't know someone that can take the picture. Every photo I have with mers and in my tail were taken by someone else, and because I knew they took the photo, I tracked it down on the internet when they posted it. I haven't seen all of the photos, but a few are lingering on the internet, one is the group photo on this thread and the other was taken by the ymca I swam at. I took a picture of my tail when I got it, but I wasn't in it.

About any casual meet ups, I don't mind meeting other mers at a ymca or at the springs. I just need to check my schedule first. I usually have sundays off, but if I get an early enough heads up I can set time aside for meeting up with someone. I just need the time, day, and place. Saturdays don't usually work very well because work usually schedules me to work during the day. It is my right to take time off then, but the store I work at is usually very busy on those days. If I'm going to meetup those days, I definitely need a heads up first. If i give them the impression that I can't work those days, they won't schedule me for those hours, and since I'm paid hourly, it wouldn't be good to lose those hours. I can definitely work out something anytime between sunday and friday though. Let me know when and where, and as soon as I see it, I'll be there. I still need to get to know everybody, and I'm looking forward to future friendships.

Ariel, I am very sorry for not responding sooner.I have contacted the other mermaids you mentioned however have a couple more that i need to contact. I also have to remove pics from dropbox in order to add more for the others. I'm still going through that process. What has crippled me is a major pc malfunction. I'm trying to work around it but it has all but stopped my working on the video. Normally I would have been able to produce the video much quicker but I'm down to a old laptop that is not capable of doing video editing or any correction to pictures quickly.


I feel like I've let you and the others down and really am upset about that. I hope someday to be able to earn a chance to do better. I will keep trying!!

We are currently in the process of planning our summer meetup at Manatee Springs. I don't have a tail, yet, so I am looking for opinions on types. I am looking at the different websites, but it is hard to tell if you haven't tried the tail. I had a fabric/spandex type tail at Weeki Wachee. We had to put flippers inside of it, so it could be a little bit difficult. I sure am looking for advice.

Yeah- It won't be until after I'm done with my internship up here. I'm thinking labor day weekend in September. It falls on the 7th this year, and is the best bet for getting to have a long weekend. (We will probably be camping again.) Miss Marlin and I are probably going to need to wait until we see our school schedules... but That time frame is a safe bet for now.

If not, FL weather means swim season well into October so we have plenty of time.

Aloha everyone! My internship is coming to an end, and I'm thinking of moving back to the islands. My last day here at this point is going to be June 27th. Any chance some mers would like to meet up before then? This weekend I have Saturday-Monday off. I plan on going to the Magic Kingdom for the 24 hour day as soon as I get off of work but after 6am I would be available all weekend! I typically have Sundays and Mondays off, and I'd love to go exploring. I also own all my own SCUBA gear, save for weights and a tank so I would also be willing to meet up for a dive! I just hope for the opportunity to meet some of you before swimming away. (:

I am on the space coast too, Noelle! Hit me up; there aren't many mers I can find in this area. -I'm in Brevard County. I was unable to go to the meet-up because, ironically, I actually did have a babysitter but did not have someone to drive with me all the way to Ocala, and I was not comfortable staying overnight up there alone. lol

Sorry about my long absence, but I had a cold for another week after the last one. A lot of icky stuff going on. However, I went to the doctor, and she said that, after one day of taking the antibiotics, I can go back to work without any concern of spreading the cold.

Mermaid Noelle, I would try a finfun tail. I recently got my first one, and I like it a lot. I was practicing at my local Y to get better at swimming in it, and it's so much fun. I recently talked to them about an idea for making the tail fit better. I don't want to say much because I don't know if they will do it, but since their tails are made with swim fabrics, I suggested that they sew into the tail a string like in men's swimsuits to keep it from sliding on the waist. I hope they do it because that would help a lot.

As far as meetups are concerned, I'm game, just give me a good heads up. June will be tricky for me because they are doing a remodel of the store, and since, I'm the maintenance/ associate worker there. I need to be on the ready to pick up the slack where ever they need it in the stores, and I need to do the maintenance work to keep it looking nice. July, I have two weeks of dog sitting to take care of, but I can spend the day doing just about anything. I have no idea about august or september, but those days will probably get busy with me starting school again, hopefully. If you want to meetup, private message me with the dates. I'll let you know if I can make it, but the only places I can make it to without good planning is Alexander Springs, Daytona, and my second childhood home New Smyrna Beach. That's right, I'm a merman that spent half his life swimming in the ocean, a pool, or some other body of water. I guess I was part fish. With my open comment aside, I actually get very nervous meeting new people. I can get comfortable after spending some time around people, but it takes time for me to build up some courage to meet new people. If I meetup with someone new, it will help to have someone I met before there.

This is a picture of me in my tail at the Y. I'm thinking about getting a new one for meetups because my current tail did receive a little damage there, but you wouldn't know the difference in the water. I tried sewing in a belt, but I think that just made things worse.

I'm liking the Troy Springs idea. That is far enough north that it isn't a huge pain in the fluke to get to for Miss Marlin and I (we might even be able to get a few of the Georgia mers to go too) and not a *terrible* distance for you guys either.

I am going there for the first time with our church's college group sometime this summer and I was wondering what people's personal experience with the spring is.

I was doing a bit of research on it and it and it seems like it is a popular SCUBA diver attraction. They seem to have koi fish in the spring?! I like koi it would be fun to swim with them especially if they are not easily spooked.

@Alea- Yeah- its got a real like natural public pool feel to it. I prefer Ponce de Leon- it's tucked into the woods a little better, and I prefer that. That being said, Vortex is a great place to swim. It's right next to my house too. (like 30 min drive away)

What about a dry meetup for us Orlando/Space area girls at the Sealife Aquarium or even SeaWorld? I want to check that place out and see if it's any good, and make friends away from work. I'm not up to mering around in front of just anyone, though. I'm more like H2O Cleo and Emma wanting to keep it a secret that only a few know about. I do need a pool to swim in away from my home where my creepy uncle and mother will watch me. Not wanting to make any sort of income from it, just want to fully express myself in a secluded place, ya know, just be me.

You probably won't get too many people here wanting to go to seaworld;) but I'm sure the other one would work! Though who am I to talk haha I wouldn't even be able to go! :) a dry meet at an aquarium would be fun though!

Sorry I made it so late to the last meetup, I got incredibly stuck in traffic, and then met with another photographer for some on-land pictures (which didn't end up happening due to the rain). I got some incredible shots and video, though! And I got to take my new tail for a spin, so that I know how it works for the future. The kids and adults loved me! :)

Let me know when is good for another swim like the last two, and I'll see what I can do. The only day I can't do anything is on June 27th when I have a kids party booked.

Sorry I kind of disappeared. I had to move with very short notice, and had a bit of a stressful time trying to find a new place and get settled in. I'm still very close to Disney, for now. I might end up moving further out to Winter Springs. I'm hoping to stay in Florida until mid August, but I still want to meet some Florida mers before I swim off.
MerMel, I would love to meet up for SeaWorld or Sea Life! I've only been to SeaWorld once. I got called into work so I didn't have time to finish exploring. Let me know if you're interested. I get free parking. :) I have not yet checked out the new facility, but I definitely want to!

They were, and I enjoyed it a lot. I'm planning on meeting up with someone or some mers on August 3rd. If you can make it, I want to encourage you to show up. It's busy, so you will probably have to talk to a lot of people. I hope you are ready for that. There is lots of space to swim, and if you still need experience in your tail, this is a great place to start.

I'm really sorry I didn't do this sooner because obviously I offended some people and that wasn't my intent. I specifically added to this post that I was really tired posting it, and I didn't think everything through clearly. Nerine, I am not trying to put words in your mouth. I even completely dropped pushing for a meetup because I was going too far. You can post the conversations if you want, but I did take your advice. I stopped posting about meetups, and I let it go. Illynreaver, the reason I even suggested Alexander Springs was not to try and force anyone to meetup because I wanted them to. I have talked to both a few mers in Tampa, and some mers on the space coast that wanted to meetup. My hopes for suggesting a meetup in the Central Florida Area was to give those who could come a chance to be there. Sirenia, I took your advice, and I posted an event planner on facebook to give people a chance to discuss a place to meetup at a year in advance at least. Like I said, I'm only trying to help and plan a meetup. I'm sorry that my post on here stirred anything up, and I probably shouldn't even posted it even though I specifically said that I would go back and edit it later when I could think things through. I do feel a little bit like my ideas were shot down, and that's a personal issue for me from a piece of my background, I guess. I understand that the meetup was getting planned farther north, and I was only suggesting a place farther south, so I could meet up with a few people I thought wanted to meetup. Obviously, as I feel it, my efforts are either too pushy for some, or I'm just doing something wrong. As far as I have read and the impression I have is concerned, with no offense toward you because this is simply me and my feelings, I am just too bad at trying to plan any get together to bother with it in the future. If you plan a meetup and want me to come along, I'll simply say I can or can't and leave that alone. I hope you guys find a great place to meetup for labor day. I just feel too tired to try anymore.

I apologize for this derailing the Florida meetup, but @Dylan, you need to understand that you came across as extremely pushy with what seemed like trying to get the entire pod to meetup at places they just couldn't get to. If you want to plan meetups with some people close to your area, go for it. Have fun and swim. A larger meetup takes a lot of planning. People need to schedule days off, possibly plan to stay the night depending on how far they have to drive. Some people can't just drop everything and go to a meetup in a day. It's not that your ideas for meetup places won't work, they just won't work for the majority of the pod, and that's okay. Understand that no one is out to attack you, but you need to understand that you can go do your thing on your own, or with a couple people. Just have fun and relax.

Dylan it's just that planning a big meetup takes a lot of time:) as I said before, the big meetup we had in April took me 5 months to plan! I posted polls for locations, dates, etc. And we all worked together after figuring those things out to planning it! It's not that people don't want to meet up or anything, it's just we planned it months ahead of time so people could get time off of work, make traveling arrangements, and make sure no other plans were made. It can't all be planned in a day. Not only do we have to be considerate of the space coast mers, but also mers from out of state who are still part of pod of the south (such as Nerine) :)

@dylan. I do get that you were trying to help. No one wants you to leave the group, or for you to feel like you can't contribute to the group. It's really that you were almost spamming the Facebook page and the forums on here with constant meetups. I'm glad you took sirenia's advice about an event planner. Don't leave the group but you might need to take a step back and try not to take all of this so personally. I would love to come to every meetup and swim with everyone in the pod. It's just not possible. Which is why I took the initiative made a post asking if people in tn wanted to meetup, so we made a plan to have a small meetup. Like I've said before, go and plan a meetup with local mers, no one is saying you shouldn't. Just understand that a larger gathering will take months of planning so don't take it to heart when a lot of people either can't make it or decline to participate.
