I think it's always interesting to find out how you're getting fans, where they're coming from, and how they've found you. It gives you good insight into what works in terms of advertising etc and how to get people to go from one site (like FB) to another (like your website).

Facebook Demographics:

I decided to ask on my FB how people found me and this was the result:

Of a total of 133 active fans who answered on FB this is how people found me

Found me on DeviantART and liked my FB through that: 18 (13%)

Found me through here/ mer yuku: 30 (22.5%)

Facebook add or feature: 8 ( 6%)

Found me through another mermaid: 22 (16.5%)

Found me through youtube: 16 (12%)

Found me through local connections or a local booking:19 ( 14.2%)

Found me through reddit, tumblr or another similar website: 11 (8%)

couldnt remember: 9 (6.7%)

It's still a pretty small reach. According to the post only
3,278 people reached but only 133 people answered the question (some people commented on the thread but didn't answer)

Here's an interesting insight into how FB breaks up the demogrpahic of who is liking my page

25633

I had no idea on FB I am more popular with men. On youtube I am more popular with women!

I recently gained some new fans and this is how it's broken down by referral of country as to where people have been coming from in the last 28 days:

25634

That's helpful to me because it helps you determine who are legit fans and also helps me set goals for more canadian fans.

In terms of my "reach" this breaks down the past 28 days and where my posts are being seen, so the first part was who is actually liking my page, this is who is actually clicking and viewing. You might remember from my thread documenting it I did a FB ad experiment that ended up defaulting to Turkey and advertising my ad only to people in Turkey... so no surprise there...

25635

Finally, this is interesting. Who actually comments and clicks and likes my stuff. Seems it's more men than women! lol

25636

You can break it down even further and see the languages people speak as well

Anyway, all this info can be found under your "insight" tab and I think it's good to make use of it. It helps to understand these things to better plot your ads, your posts, and understand exactly who is viewing your page. You can also see the popular times for your posts and can schedule your posts to go up when more people are liklier to see it based on the history of how your fanbase has interacted with your page.

I'll do another one of these on using google anayltics on your website (I'll explain how to set it up and then read it and how you can use that) and one for youtube. On both google An and youtube you can eventually make money directly from views so it's good to know those!

As for me, I am trying all kinds of neat new aps and services to try and expand my reach to canadians to gain more local jobs! I'll let you know if any of them work

I, for one, did not see the post where you asked where people found you. I find that I only get three or four out of 15 posts you make even though I liked your page and have it set to notifications

^^You have to check manually.
FB throttles reach on posts because they want people to pay for a boost.

Oooh! I should do this for my fanpage! I've been getting about 25 new likes a week now, and I want to know where they are coming from!

I tried paying for boost as well, but it works on an auction system. If you don't bet the money high enough, they don't do anything. And they aren't required to boost it to your fans.

Bleh, FB. I'm pretty much only keeping a fanpage on there right now because it's what's expected (until Ello or another, better social networking site comes out - maybe we should all move back to Myspace?). I really hate all these "pay-to-promote" requirements they're starting to twist our arms with...

I have been on ello for months and it's dead.

Yeah, i imagine it'll be dead for some time, until they make a big public debut (I remember when FB was just whispered about). Right now, FB is the most well-known platform, though now it's being used largely as a way to keep in contact with family - exactly what happened to Myspace before it died out.

They did make a big debut that was how I found them. Big media campaign
