Computer nerd here, what kind of computers do people use? If you use virtual machines list what you use daily or fairly daily.

My boyfriend is in networking and IT with a communications company, and used to be in other computer related fields, so we have several computers thanks to him. My laptops are Linux Mint, my desktop is Windows 7. His desktop is Windows 7, his Rasperry Pis are SQL of some kind, his Minecraft server is a Linux server os, but I don't know which one, and his and my phones both use Android. Mine uses Jellybean, I don't know what OS his mobile has. His has a lot more capability than mine, so he can do his job from it when on call, if necessary. He also has a laptop running both Linux Ubuntu and some Windows Vista, which I can't figure out why he's keeping. lol
Personally, I only have a Windows OS so I can fully take advantage of iTunes and a few other things that not even the most up to date Linux with all the bells and whistles can do. Otherwise, I'd have Linux Mint on everything, I love this OS. A little tweaking and Netflix runs just fine using Netflix Desktop. But there is still no iTunes workaround for actually getting the ipod to synch, and virtual machine has never worked for me, nor has Wine been able to work fully with iTunes. The only problem I'm having with Linux right now is that Adobe Flash is way behind on updates for Linux, so there are sites starting to not work on Linux. That part sucks. Adobe doesn't seem to give a damn.

I use Windows as my working computer. I have to run an Ubuntu flavor Linux Virtual Machine for my C-type programming compilers because my computer hates Cygwin and Min-GW.

Well, Windows only on my notebook, Windows and Linux (Debian) on my netbook, Linux (Raspbian) only on my two Raspberry Pi and Windows Phone 8.1 on my smartphone. (I guess that qualifies for being a nerd ;) )

You get bonus geek points for knowing different flavors of Linux :)
Geek- not nerd. Geeks are cooler :)

My first laptop was dual boot, win 98 and Linux red hat. It saved my life when I was still at school. Some hacker destroyed my windows drive, but because I partitioned my hdd, all my files were still safe and I could continue to work in Linux... I was so happy that I had a friend who had the patience to help me with getting the windows files getting to work under Linux, cause I was (still am) a Linux noob :P

^ why is that so surprising? I got the same thing from my BF when we met, because I not only use Linux but had used different versions. To me, if you're someone who's going to know about and use Linux in the first place, you're going to know about different distros. Esp because so many people are told Ubuntu is the best to start with, and then realize how awkward and clumsy it can be. ;)

My main laptop is Mac running developer versions so I am on 10.10.2 right now. I have two desktops, one using XP the other Win 7 (only to play halo 2). But I use Ubuntu Server, Ubuntu 11 and 12, XP, 8, 10 preview, sometimes 98 and android in virtual machines on my mac. I also play with other distros using live cds. I use a program called SARDU which allows me to create a flash drive with multiple live CDs to boot from so when I fix computers I just plug in one drive and can boot from about 30 different ISOs and utilities. My mobile is iPhone.
I am trying to get my work to switch to linux for our kiosk/presentation computers, and ubuntu studio to run den live for video editing but my manager thinks its better to use something that is hard to use if we already paid for it than something that works better and easier. He actually said that but I don't remember the quote.

It may just be that I am really new with Linux. I really only use it for the compile environments and had to look up almost all of the commands for downloading and installing the files for my IDE. I pretty much just found what worked for the one utility I needed the separate OS (in the VM) for, and stuck with it. I just found it cool to see the people using the other versions out there, and why they use them. (pros and cons kinda thing).

Quick way to know if you use Linux or Mac a lot is when you go back to windows, try to see the contents of a directory and type in ls. Had to make a link in command prompt to translate ls to dir.
I was helping someone with a very old MP3 player today. So frustrated on windows because it didn't have a drive letter and I couldn't just cd to it by copying in the path in windows explorer.

My first computer was an Apple II+, followed by a Apple //gs, followed by a Mac Quadra 900, followed by a PowerMac 8500, followed by a PowerMac G3, G4, G5... well, you get the idea. My current computer is an iMac i7. There are a few other iMacs, MacBooks, PowerBooks, AppleTVs, iPhones, and iPods around here as well - seven kids use a lot of bandwidth ;)
