View Full Version : Jewish Mers?

I tried searching the forums for this, but I noticed this hasn't been posted yet.

The holiday season is a pretty lonely time of year for me, as my holiday isn't very important, and all of my secular friends don't know how to handle a Jewish holiday. During the high holy days, nobody has any idea what I'm talking about or why I disappear during odd times throughout the week. Even at work, I get called all sorts of religious slurs(especially during December for some odd reason) and have had to deal with this all of my life. I'm hoping I'm not alone with these problems.

However, I am proud to be Jewish, celebrate some amazing holidays (especially Purim!), have a rather extensive history, and am able to speak a language as old as the bible itself.

Are there any other Jewish mers out there?

I'm not Jewish but I want to make the comment that of course your holidays are important!!!! I'm sorry you get called slurs because of your faith. That's not a fun way to be treated. :( Hold in there and trust in God, and it'll all work out! :)

If you don't mind me asking, what Jewish slurs?

I think I am ignorant from my sheltered life and living in the boonies but it amazes me intolerance exists.

While I do have some Jewish family members (Zoroastrians and Jews have a long intertwined history together in Iran), I'm not Jewish, but I totally feel you on the whole "lonely holiday season". Both here and Iran my holidays (with the exception of Norooz) were pretty much the "unimportant" or outright nonexistent ones that synced up with the big stuff. In Iran it was actually a larger problem, because everyone else celebrated ramedan or ashura, but I still was expected to "be polite" (i.e., not eat or drink anything in front of anyone while they fasted.... sometimes in the middle of freakin' summer) even though I'm not muslim, but no one was expected to be polite in return to me on my holidays. Even the holidays we shared, (Norooz) my non-Z friends had very different approach/view on what the holiday was and how it should be treated. They often times didn't understand when I tried to explain to them why we do it.... Hell, why THEY do it.

I've had to deal with weird as all hell racial slurs both in Iran for being Zoroastrian during muslim holidays (and in general, but oh boy, do the holidays just bring out the ass-hat in everyone!) and in America for being Middle-Eastern, especially during the holidays people look at me funny for having my head covered and buying "Christmas" stuff. I've had a few verbal things go down, all ignorant, all especially hurtful because they were directed at me for being something I'm not.... But mostly, I'm lucky, because in California, especially the LA area, there's such a large ethnic mix that most people, even if they do want to say something, they won't.

But I will note, that t's surprising how much racial crap does come up at work.... Like, you'd think people would be worried you'd go to HR on them, but I remember my last job, my second day there a coworker straight up told me "Hey, look! I found a picture of you!" and it was this meme:

:eye twitch:
They they followed it up with "I bet your dad's done that." and "That's how you got married, huh? Your dad needed a new camel." I also remember them saying "you celebrate Halloween? Isn't that like, not part of your culture?" like Halloween was some religious holiday that had special reverence instead of a holiday where everyone in America dresses up, gets candy, and if you're an adult, gets drunk. Like, I'm in America, I'm wearing jeans, and speaking English, I'm pretty sure Halloween is now part of my culture.

So yeah, wtf is up with people at work thinking that racist shit is ok? Just because I'm working in close quarters with you does NOT mean we're close like that. I don't even let my ACTUAL friends make those stupid jokes.

Attachement isn't working.

Yea here in my part of the US you only know about Christian holidays, never about other religions except I think last year when 3 of them fell on the same day.

People are dicks. I really wish I could say that I'm shocked that you guys are treated that way, but at least I can say that I'm appalled. I may not know much about Judaism or anything about Zoroastrianism, but I know that racial or religious slurs are never appropriate, never funny, and never necessary.

As to the matter of Jewish mers? I know one, but she isn't on the forum and she doesn't swim in a tail, though I really think she would like to. My Aunt Tobey rocks like that.

Thats mean how they use it to make fun of you, though the image might be addressing how women are still treated like property and traded or sold into marriage...though probably not the way it should of suggesting ways to fix that.

ME ME ME ME ME!!!! I'm part of a reform family that leans more to the conservative side of things and my bat mitzvah was on Dec 6. But we don't practice sabbath but I do attend Hebrew school and go to temple on the holidays.

I'm a Reform Jew and am very proud to have had a Jewish mother. Thanks, MermaidCelesteFL, for thinking of asking the community. Judaism has a rich tradition of storytelling for the sake of learning about our humanity and exploring ethical questions. That storytelling works its way into mythology, which is probably why Jews have excelled in the entertainment industry, myself no exception. There's also probably a link with mermaids in there somewhere.
