So I knew that they would dampen sound but I guess I didn't realize how much (silly me didn't do enough research :p ). Has anyone else used them and found they are able to adjust to the dampened sound or is it not that bad for you lovely people?

If this is in the wrong spot or there is a thread about it, let me know. Thanks!l

Maybe I should wear them around for a few hours a day to get used to them more. Might help. I just realized last night that I couldn't wear them to my water aerobics class because I couldn't hear the instructor. But mebbeh if I get used to them it'll help? And use them first when I have my glasses on to get used to one thing at a time.

I use vented plugs, and I hear just as well as without any (you just have to shake the water remaining on the plug out from time to time).

They allow equalization, thus are suitable for diving.
You should not dive with non-vented earplugs if your eardrums mean anything to you.

I've never heard of vented ear plugs! *goes to search* But... water still gets in your ears? How does that work then?

Raina did they work even if they didn't fit? Sounds like another thing going on my christmas list. Hope they make lifeguard red.

I actually find the dampened sound a relief. Honestly for me swimming is something I'm not entirely comfortable with when I don't have all my accessories. Nose plug, ear plugs, goggles. I had a near drowning experience when I was about 10 so going underwater is something that I'm trying to get better about. I did manage to go swimming without my nose plug though! Anyways, with the anxiety I get from going underwater and the normal noises of a pool (screaming kids, splashing, etc) I really love how peaceful it is. And I can usually make out what people are saying to me from reading their lips anyways.

A few weeks ago I bought the Doc Pro Vented Plugs sample kit, where it comes with multiple sizes for figuring out what size you need. Today after teaching a swim lesson I tried out each of the 4 sizes they sent to figure out which were the best fit. Being 6'4", size 16 shoes, XL shirts, etc. I figured the largest size they sent, the XL, would be what I need. Turns out I am somewhere between M and L. Based on the fit I think I am going to go with the L.

I tested them in a 5 foot pool by pushing off the wall hard, doing summersaults, rolling fast sideways both left and right, and holding a ladder and laying on teach side for a full breath. Also some laying on my back to blow ring bubbles. Both the M and L work quite well in keeping the ears dry, and don't feel like they are going to fall out. The XL also kept out the water but they don't get flush with the skin around the ear hole.
