View Full Version : At Cost SILICONE Tails!

I am in the process of working with another costumer about making her an at cost silicone tail. I have not made a silicone tail before, but I am familiar with the material. You wouldn't pay a dime unless happy with the sculpts.

Message or friend me on FB for more info. https://www.facebook.com/carissa.grall

I'm horrible at making posts like this and my laptop is about to die. xD Cost would be ~$600.

This is a wonderful opportunity! I would snap at it if I weren't making my own. Good luck!

If it's possible at all for you to make a tail before you sell one, that'd be the best course of action. People will be very wary of buying from you if you haven't got work to show, and given past experiences here, it'd be totally fair enough.

I do like the idea of completing sculpts before payment, though! That's definitely one of the more time consuming parts, so people might be more willing to take the chance.

What do you mean by "at cost"?

At cost usually means that you're only paying the price for the materials themselves. So no charge for the time and effort it takes to make the item.

Exactly :) At cost means they make no money on the product (the tail in this case). It's a way for newer makers to offer something and get a few customers to build good faith/good reputation for the product/maker. It can be a gamble since they don't have any or much work to back them up thus far, but can turn out great and a good deal if all goes well!

What Iona said. :) Wasn't Raven's first tail the one she made for Raina?

I've worked with the material before for other projects, and I've been wanting to make a full tail for awhile. I have all the mold materials already. So all you would be paying for is the silicone, pigments, monofin, and shipping. And I will not ask for any money unless you're happy with the sculpts and want to proceed.

I have two people interested already. Depending on designs, that will likely be my limit for now. Then I will have examples of my work, and two mers will have their silicone tail! :)

I am your friend on facebook. I love what I have seen thus far. I am so excited. Me and my boyfriend are waiting to see how your first 2 tails turn out, then if everything is great (which I am positive it will be) we will be sending you pictures. Lol
I love the top you made, and showed off your sculpting skills, along with showing off the fact that you know your way around an air brush. ^_^ Looking SUPER forward to getting a tail from you.

When do you think your first tail will be finished?

I think it is GORGEOUS! I love my tail! I told her I had no idea what color scheme I wanted, and only a vague idea of the style I wanted. I sent her a bunch of pictures of tails I liked and fish I thought were pretty, and she sent me two sketches to chose from and offered to keep sketching if I didn't like those two. I was in love with both, so she ended up choosing for me. lol. And she has been working her tail off since then! lol

I was VERY skeptical of having a tail made by someone who hadn't made one before. I looked at her Mystique costume and it was awesome, so I figured I'd give her a shot. AND SHE IS DOING AMAZING!!! She sends me updates all the time and even more when I get impatient and message her a million times. lol. She is also making me a top and possibly some wrist cuffs. I am SUPER excited!!!

Seam? What seam?

No more at cost tails will be offered. I have two more tails to complete after this one, then tails will start at $1200. :)

Not yet. I have to finish this one before I can start casting yours. I just don't have the room right now! Lol. Your fluke is done, just cleaning out the mold. And casting some scales as I go. :)

Very nice work.
Are those scales individual or a sheet?

Shimmer Mermaid
03-23-2015, 12:51 PM
Individual from my understanding. :) I'm definitely getting one from her.

Ilyena
03-24-2015, 01:37 AM
If it was individual, why would there be a need to seam?

Dancing Fish
03-24-2015, 02:13 AM
It looks like a sheet that's been very carefully interleaved at the seam, perhaps with some individual scales cleverly placed. Pretty! I've never seen a sheet-seam so well done.
