View Full Version : SFX Makeup Question: SCARRING - Rigid Collodion + Chlorinated Pools?

So as my tail nears completion, I've been thinking a lot more about my seadragoness mersona, Starfrit, and it occurs to me that she would probably have some sort of scars on her arms/sides/back or something. She's a seadragon, she's gotten into fights, scarring happens.

I have a bottle of super-fancy special effects liquid called Rigid Collodion, used for creating realistic scarring effects— as it dries, it tightens the skin and indents it like a scar with skin missing (notable example of this in use: The Joker's facial scars in The Dark Knight).

I've used the stuff a few times (no pictures though, since I was just experimenting/screwing around each time), gotten some interesting results with it, and water alone does NOT get that stuff off. The first time I tried it out, I had no remover, or baby oil, or anything, and after attempting to soak it in warm water for a while I nearly took a few layers of skin off my arm. >_o

My question is this: Is anybody else familiar with this stuff, and do you think it would react to being in a chlorinated pool? Would some sort of waterproof sealant for other cosmetic makeups protect it, or would it still go funky after a while?

I may see if I can test this at some point, and get some results for myself (or, at the very least, ask the SFX guy I bought the stuff off of in the first place) but in the meantime, has anybody else tried it? Any recommendations?

Alternative Question, for those who don't know/don't care/whatever: What kind of badass scars would you want to see on a mermaid/merman?

Shark bites! Like little individual teeth scars! Or little pirhanna bites.

I was definitely thinking shark bites! That and maybe orca teeth rakes, or something!

I have a feeling I'm gonna need a bigger bottle of collodion...

Lol probably. And it sounds like it would work fine in chlorine

I'd say shark bites for sure, perhaps some scars that look like old knife or cutlass wounds if you're the type to snatch sailors (food fought back!), or maybe 3-4 parallel straight scars like you fought something with claws.

Be careful using colloidal for more than one day (over several days). It can burn your skin after repeated use in a short amount of time.

Don't worry, I made that mistake the first time, too. Still got a mark on my left arm from a stubborn bit that wouldn't come off for a few days back in... May, I think? XD

Uh oh then I would definitely do some research into how it reacts with chlorine. If it can burn your skin then it might do that in the pool.

Hey there! I'm a special effects makeup artist. I would suggest AGAINST rigid colodian because of it ACTUAL scarring properties.. I'd go with something like Liquid Latex....
