I hope you guys don't mind, I thought it would be good to have a thread for just shell tops. I actually just bought some sea shells and made one for my girlfriend today. I want to make a how-to, and I'll post some pictures of it when I can.

Oh malinghi, I would love love LOVE a tutorial for making shell tops, as long as it doesn't involve anything too wacky. I've wanted a real shell top for a while now, but the making of one has always scared me off. That and the fact that sea shells are few and far between here in Canada. Any suggestions on where to find them?

anyway, I'd appreciate a tutorial very much, and I'm sure everyone else would too. Thanks!!

The only step that might be difficult for some people is that you need to drill holes in the shells. Its not hard, but it does require access to a drill, which some people don't have.

Just a power drill? No special diamond tips or anything? well, those aren't hard to come by! I think I have a power drill stashed in my closet...

When you've got the time, please share with us! Summer is coming and I'd love a real shell top, even if I don't have my tail yet. :(

Yeah, just a regular drill. I'm using a drill press but a handheld power drill should work too. To reduce the likelihood of the shell cracking I recommend drilling a small hole first and then drilling through the hole again with a larger bit to open it up. I'll try to make a how-to video when I can.

Sorry you don't have a tail yet. Are you planing on making or buying one soon?

Ooh, a video! Neat! Be sure to post here when you're done, I can add it to my list of How-To's!

I'd rather get a sewing machine and make my own, it'll be at least a hundred dollars for the machine, and what's the cheapest commercial tail? Around $150, maybe? I'd rather get a sewing machine, make my own, plus be able to make more in the future.

Then I'll have to get a monofin. I guess I'll just call some scuba shops and see what they have. If all else fails, I -could- use the regular fins I have but they're a funny shape. I'd rather get a monofin and just keep my regular fins for, well, regular swimming.

Of course, before I get all these things, I need to get a steady source of income. Things are so expensive these days!
Once I get my tail done, I'll post pictures!

And I will be lurking in wait for this tutorial, malinghi! Can't wait to see just how you do it!!

I'll post the picture later. I've been really busy but I made a how-to for the shell top! So far no youtube video, and I'm not sure if I'm going to make one, but I made a written version and uploaded a pdf of it to my deviantart profile. If anyone wants it just go to this link and download it, or contact me and I can e-mail you a copy.

Malinghi, that is GORGEOUS. Thank you SO much for that, especially the PDF format- I can download it and take it with me on the run (darn buses without wi-fi!)

A+ on the art skills too!

If/when I get around to doing mine, I'll post it for everyone to see.

Large shells are sold individually at Michaels. They are big enough to have good coverage for most women, and are fairly cheap. However if you plan to make a shell bra by drilling holes be prepared as you may have to buy more shells- you can do things to decrease the likelihood of the shells breaking but it still happens a lot, which is why they tend to be expensive. There are tons of sites with tips on how to keep shells from breaking- give it a google!

Really? I didn't have much trouble with the holes. And I had no idea that people charge a lot of money for them. You think I could sell sea shells? If I did I think I'd charge $20 plus shipping and handling. Do you think anyone would buy them?

You may be able to sell the shells for the bras if you sell them for $15-$20. Most people don't want to go through the hassle especially if they break or crack the shells when they first try. That price may draw in customers as the only two places I've found that sell actual seashell bras charge about $50-$60 for them.

Merfolk tails has them for 30 bucks with a single leather tie- it's the braided leather tie that costs 50. But 30 dollars is pretty affordable. Any of the other places I checked were much more expensive.

In my opinion- it's definitely worth getting real shell tops- looks so much more authentic. But I can imagine they are a huge hassle to make...

If you were making one, what were you going to use to tie it together with? And hopefully you can use a test subject XD because theres so many different ways to tie it, you just want to make sure it'll cover, if you know what I mean.

Keela your shells are gorgeous! I went to the dollar store and got this plastic shell top, then took off the white string and replaced it with clear bra straps. Underwater it looks like I just have shells on. What do ya'll think?

Princesswizard, I just checked the gallery you posted a couple days ago. Yeah, the bra strap looks invisible. That's pretty impressive. The string of the necklace you're wearing looks invisible too. Is that fishing line? Did you make it or buy it?

Thanks malinghi! My best friend bought me that necklace for my b-day a few months ago. I'm not sure what's being used as the string in between the pearls but it does look like fishing line. At Jo-ann's I saw some sea shells on clear string that would be perfect to line the bra straps with. I may go today and get some. As a mermaid, I think I'm always in a state of becoming...never finished :) what about ya'll?

Malinghi-if you could make pretty shell tops for wearing for $20 heck yeah people would buy them :) I actually came upon a pleasant surprise at the Dollar Tree! They were selling plastic seashell tops! I think I mentioned this somewhere else but anyhoo, it's $1, then I went to the fabric store and got clear bra straps and replaced the string with those. They look really cool....so if you have a dollar tree near you check it out! Also, I found this light at Target that floats in your pool and puts off patterns of laser light shows. It looks like a disco underwater for like $15 and if you did a photoshoot in your pool with those lights it could look amazing! :)

MermaidKeela I LOVE that top. Its gorgeous. :) I either want a real shell top or a starfish top.

But does anyone know where you can get a starfish top?
I know they had some on the Merfolk site but they are not available for ordering.

Michaels sells large shells, as well as dried starfish- for great prices too. I don't imagine it would be hard to make a starfish top (http://www.merfolktails.com/Starfishtops.jpg) like the one they sell on FoxMoon (for $60!) for cheap. Just run some heavy hemp or other heavy twine through different parts of the starfish. Not sure how you would make the hole.. perhaps with a nail or drill bit, depeding on how thick/fragile the starfish is. If you're not sure where to put the string, look at pictures of Mermaid Garnette (http://foxmoonmerfolk.deviantart.com/gallery/#_search/garnette) for help- the starfish top is one of her trademarks.

http://images.yuku.com/image/jpg/9b216d667cbd3ccdcd4ea483e110b92c10af5bf5_r.jpgI made faux sea shell bra by getting these sticky foamish bra cups that you can buy if you don't want to wear a bra. They are covered with mini sea shells and stones and a few beads. They stick to me but are also held on with fishing line- I got the idea after asking Hannah and one of her photographers a bunch of questions :) It worked really well for a few photo shoots but eventually I had to retire them. I could get them wet but they didn't last as long. Hannah used the same thing but really tinkered with hers til she got them to work and the fishing line made it easier for photographers to edit

Well I have finally got my top started and I love the idea, but I have one issue. Does anyone know what kind of glue would be best to attach things to a bra? It doesn't necessarily have to be waterproof but it would be nice if it was. Thanks guys and girls :)

Fabri-tac. It holds everything to everything when it comes to fabric, and is waterproof and delightful and my absolute go-to for costume making. If there were a religion dedicated to Fabri-tac, I would be a member. XD

I am finally getting my very first top finished. I can't wear it, it is too small; once it is finished I think I will try to sell it.
I am currently working one two other tops to match the mermaid wreaths purchased from Merbellas, that will actually fit. :( It is a difficult task!
http://www.etsy.com/shop/StrangeCupOfTea

The picture doesn't quite capture the colors the way I wanted. The shells in the back are bright purple and the Lion's Paws are browns and off white, and the pearls are alternating deep purple and white to match.

Constructive criticism is welcome as well, I might start to sell them once I get the hang of it. I am in no way trying to compete with Raven's awesome-ness! She blows me out of the water big time ;D

(So yeah, the whole uploading the picture, I REALLY tried but just couldn't figure it out. The link posted below should make it show up on Tinypic.com, sorry guys!)

Another option is Emily Angelfish at http://emilyangelfish.com/

Their tops are $18 in the US and $22 in Canada. The shells are plastic and can be custom painted to match your tail.

I think both of the tops are beautiful! The extra shells placed that way with the big shell is a great idea. I've put a shell top on only to decide not to wear it out in public because I feel like the big one by itself just doesn't cover a enough or isn't secure enough to go swimming in public. This would defiantly cover more while staying true to the look. Any chance we could get pics of the tops being worn/modeled?

The first seashell top I made :) The colors look orange and red but they are the same color in person. I do plan on making more and selling them; any ideas are welcome for future tops! I have a vast array of mermaid-esque things to attach to them.

Wow they look even better on a model! I noticed when I was looking that the 1st and 2nd ones seem to fit better, be more secure/supporting as opposed to the 2nd and 3rd ones. When something fits better it's generally more attractive looking of course. Just something I thought I would point out for you to consider/ponder :) If you really want to get into making and selling shell tops I think something worth looking into would be what string/hole placement works/supports/looks the best. That being said, taking everything into consideration I think #1 is my favorite ^_^

Thank you! I'm confused by which ones you think fit better haha (1&2, then 2&3?). Anyways, the fit will be determined by a number of things, we figured out. 1. How tightly the strings are tied, 2. Cup size, and 3. position (they can be worn "right side up" and upsidedown). It is easier to see what I mean by upsidedown and rightside up on the Rainbow Bright one, on my facebook. I wanted to do different styles because there are so many ways to string them together also make them versatile enough to be worn more than one way.

Desert tan parachute cord?

If it is, I'd be more worried about the shells breaking than the strings. Love para cord!

I like the idea of the netting on shells :) I'm not sure how natural you are going for, but what would look super cool is if you painted them a bright color and used the black fishnet on top!

@melbel1023

When in doubt, just start with the smallest size possible and slowly increase. This will help the shell not crack as you drill through it.
