View Full Version : Winter Swims!

Cause it's winter sometimes it seems merfolk get sad when we can't go for swims at our usual spots. Despite this I feel like a back to swim thread is needed for general happiness. Pics of pool swim, lake swims, and ocean swims to help all the mers who are snowed or frozen in get through the season!

(I may be failing to mention that some of us live in Hawai'i and it was stated on the news last week that "it's rather chilly tonight at 68 degrees :P.")

Harmony, Ashley and I hit the water yesterday! I am jellyfish jelly of Ashley's Merbella.

Great photos! I'm having withdrawals from being unable to swim in my tail!! (P.s. I'll be in Oahu this may!! I mentioned something to harmony a while back but it would be great to see you all!)

Maybe that's when we should shoot for our open water shark dive

I am a bit envious you guys get good winter swims in, but these pictures are great.
And so are those tails!

Huh?

A lot of my friends do dive tours and there are some on the North Shore that do open water shark dives. You just hop in and swim with sandbars etc. I want to go out with tails and get some pictures of mers with sharks! There's that or we can do dolphin and whale swims.

I know! I got to keep it at my place for a night and my tails had a sleepover with her's. I left them all next to each other in case some of the pretty rubs off. I was petting her tail and talking to is like Gollum with his ring. I am like pseudo in love with Raven and I don't even like girls.

Both of those ideas sound AMAZING

Is the sea water warm in winter in Hawaii? Or is it more like a tropical country?

Mermaid Harmony

Jaffa, it's warm some days, but if you go early in the morning, or later in the evening it's cold (to me) but I guess for others it's just crisp and feels nice. In the winter time it takes some getting used to (I think) but in the summer it's warm and perfect.

It's way better than anywhere else I've ever swam. I don't go numb and if it's sunny out it's great.

Yay! Sharks aren't my thing of study, but I do value and appreciate them. Some are really beautiful

Anyone able to make a snow mermaid?

I just finished a Snow Queen mermaid tail complete with snowflakes and icicle-inspired scales. It also includes a cape and scepter! I'll hafta take some pics and post em, it's so fun! :-)

Are there shark nets where you are swimming? Or is it open waters?

Linda, please do post some pics!

I'm putting together a winter swan mermaid outfit for my library storytime session in February. Here's the basic design for the tail, which will be neoprene with pearlized painted feathers, and a smattering of sequins and snowflakes.

Mermaid Galene, I love the concept, I can't wait to see the finished product! Here is the snow queen tail. Sorry it's not the best of photos, there's quite a glare. It's hard to see all the snowflake sequins throughout the tail, but it's fun anyhow! :) 26327

That's a really unique scale design! They look like snowy mountain ranges :)

Haha yah, I thought the same thing after the whole thing was done. The original idea was to make them look like icicles…oh well, people get it when they see it. :-D

I think it's just cause it's the wrong way up! It does look like icicles from the other way around :)

So I went and did a photoshoot 2 weeks ago at the beach. The water felt like ice but the pictures turned out great:) totally worth it!

Oh, Linda Stephanie, that tail is glorious! Beautifully painted!

I have finalized my swan costume concept. The neoprene is on order, the top and wings are on their way from Etsy, my jeweler created the fabulous necklace, and I'm making the other accessories. (I decided I'm upgrading my mermaid character from just "mermaid" to "mermaid water fairy siren." With the added element of fairies and flight, when I do my animal-themed programs, I can teach about birds and insects as well as aquatic critters.) My swan tail will be swimmable, but not the entire outfit. It will make its debut at a library gig next month, at which our theme is trumpeter swans. I'm seriously considering doing a photoshoot in my costume at the edge of the frozen, scenic St. Croix River where I live, with hundreds of trumpeter swans in the background. We'd get some magical photos, but it would be tough, with the bitter cold and the piles of bird poop and all! :O_o:
