Hi, everyone!

I've been lurking about for a few weeks on this forum, and I finally want to introduce myself. I picked Ciela as my mername, and while I don't have a tail or anything yet (my fingers are crossed for a monofin for Christmas), I've been enthralled by the notion that mermaid tails are a thing that people make/buy/use to be professional mermaids/mermen/merfolk ever since I found Mermaid Raina's facebook page entirely by accident. (Hi, Raina! Thanks for opening up this world to me. I actually found the mernetwork from your books!)

I'm 19, from NYC, and attend college in Pittsburgh (though I'm currently on a gap year - so I'm in NYC until June or July) where I'm pursuing an engineering degree. In my spare time I like to write books about and draw mermaids, and I've been obsessed with them ever since my parents showed me The Little Mermaid as a kiddo. I watched the entirety of H2O: Just Add Water and Mako Mermaids for the first time in May, and I'm now rewatching them because why not (plus season 2 of Mako Mermaids). I haven't seen a lot of the big mermaid movies, like Splash or anything, though I'd like to. I've been a certified SCUBA diver since I was 10 (thanks mom), although I don't have the chance to dive nearly as much as I'd like to.

I'm saving up for a silicone tail, but will probably start out with trying to make my own tail out of neoprene (I've been poring over all of the how-to threads on here, which are invaluable!).

I mentioned wanting to get/make a mermaid tail to my parents and my dad laughed and said that I was certifiably insane. So that was great. They're usually pretty supportive of me, so I'm not taking his initial scoffing too seriously, and I figure he'll come around eventually. My mom's been joining me at the pool, so that's nice. I'm picking up swimming (again?) to exercise/get back in shape (I used to play varsity soccer in high school, and now I'm so out of shape I may as well be a circle), and also to get my strength up to one day be able to swim around in a tail.

I think I've rambled on for long enough - I'm hoping to meet and make some friends here! :)

Hurray!! I'm so glad there are other mermaids in NY - I've heard of Lanai and looked at her website and would love to meet her one day, but I didn't realize there were so many other mer here!! I'm so happy :D :D :D

Welcome welcome! You'll find so so so much information here about making your own tails, and there are plenty of people who have paved the way to draw inspiration from. Nyx and Morticia are two of my personal favourites in terms of neoprene - Morticia makes her neoprene seamless, and Nyx's tails are among the most realistically painted that I've seen.

Great to have you here! :)

Thank you, Melaina! I'll definitely look into the stuff that Nyx and Morticia have done - a seamless tail sounds like something to aspire to! As I was kind of daydreaming about possible designs, I was thinking about putting a short dorsal fin to strategically cover up the velcro or zipper I might use to keep it in place... I don't know, I'll probably sketch something out later on. But it's great to have somewhere to start - I'm happy to be here! :)

Lanai is awesome! I'm sure you'll get to meet her some day~
Lindsey (mermaids-and-anchors) and I live about an hour out of the city in the hudson valley, and there's a few more mers a bit farther upstate. There's also Cookie in Harlem, and quite a few mers nearby in NJ! C:

Hi everyone! It's great to meet you all :) I lucked out and did get a monofin for Christmas, and I've used it twice now - it's positively MAGICAL. I love it!! I'm looking into getting a nose plug or clip so that I can try to figure out some tricks, although the pool I swim at is pretty busy so maybe I'll stick to just swimming back and forth in my lane. I've never been so excited about swimming until now!! I'm definitely going to be making a neoprene tail, although I'm not sure if that'll fly or not in the pool I swim at. Maybe I'll look around for some private pools once I get that far? I hope there are meetups soon!! That'd be great.

(Late to the party, as always.) Hi and welcome to the group :) I live in NJ, but I work in the city. We have a meetup group, here's the FB page for it:

We'd love to have you join us :)

Question: where are you swimming? We've been having a bit of trouble finding an indoor pool to work with during the colder months.

Hurray! Thanks for the welcome :) I'd love to join the meetup group, but Facebook is telling me that the content is currently unavailable. Oops! I'll PM you my Facebook name and where I swim and hopefully that'll sort things out.
