Mermaid Ciela

Hi, everyone!
I've been lurking about for a few weeks on this forum, and I finally want to introduce myself. I picked Ciela as my mername, and while I don't have a tail or anything yet (my fingers are crossed for a monofin for Christmas), I've been enthralled by the notion that mermaid tails are a thing that people make/buy/use to be professional mermaids/mermen/merfolk ever since I found Mermaid Raina's facebook page entirely by accident. (Hi, Raina! Thanks for opening up this world to me. I actually found the mernetwork from your books!)
I'm 19, from NYC, and attend college in Pittsburgh (though I'm currently on a gap year - so I'm in NYC until June or July) where I'm pursuing an engineering degree. In my spare time I like to write books about and draw mermaids, and I've been obsessed with them ever since my parents showed me The Little Mermaid as a kiddo. I watched the entirety of H2O: Just Add Water and Mako Mermaids for the first time in May, and I'm now rewatching them because why not (plus season 2 of Mako Mermaids). I haven't seen a lot of the big mermaid movies, like Splash or anything, though I'd like to. I've been a certified SCUBA diver since I was 10 (thanks mom), although I don't have the chance to dive nearly as much as I'd like to.
I'm saving up for a silicone tail, but will probably start out with trying to make my own tail out of neoprene (I've been poring over all of the how-to threads on here, which are invaluable!).
I mentioned wanting to get/make a mermaid tail to my parents and my dad laughed and said that I was certifiably insane. So that was great. They're usually pretty supportive of me, so I'm not taking his initial scoffing too seriously, and I figure he'll come around eventually. My mom's been joining me at the pool, so that's nice. I'm picking up swimming (again?) to exercise/get back in shape (I used to play varsity soccer in high school, and now I'm so out of shape I may as well be a circle), and also to get my strength up to one day be able to swim around in a tail.
I think I've rambled on for long enough - I'm hoping to meet and make some friends here! :)
