So i came across a video on youtube by 'Stella the Siren' (I don't think she's on mernetwork), but she made a gorgeous tail that extended up to her shoulders... a "full body" tail I guess you could call it. Stella didn't go into the details of how she made it, but I was wondering if any crafty mers have any tips/ideas for how you would go about making something like this? :) I think it looks so beautiful and unique, and I love that it covers the tummy too haha :P But at the same time its a little daunting and I would have no clue where to start!!! :thinks:
heres a link to the video! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1wBDDCXg4Q) :)

The extended chiffon on this tail makes the moment absolutely gorgeous!
As for making a tail such as this, from my perspective of one who does sew clothes, I would use the regular method of making a fabric tail, then add to your tail pattern a simple halter top pattern if you wanted it to be in one piece. Otherwise there a many free patterns for a simple top as such which you could use to attach to the tail.
Hope that helped, I'm very much new at posting here.

I just wear a one piece swimsuit in black and orange. It matches both of my black tail and orange tail.
I like the idea of a full bodied tail, but I think it will be difficult to take off in an emergency. I don't know about other fabrics though...

Stella does have an account here (http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?8946-Stella-the-Siren-reporting-for-duty!) but she's not on much.
I second Madeleine - just make a pattern for a regular tail and add a halter top/whatever other kind of top to it :)
Additionally, if you want some inspiration, Pearlie Mae's silicone tail is full body!
Stella just recently joined :) She's been one of my mer-idols since I found her very early in my mermaid journey!
I believe she said it was actually a separate swimsuit (one-piece) that just so happened to match exactly? It just goes to show that, underwater, little details we obsess over are not as visible, and you can create quite an illusion rather simply!

FYI- Pearlie's isn't a one piece tail from fluke to shoulder, it's a tail and a lovely scale top she made separately. She just did such a great job that they look seamless.

I know Otter Bay makes full-body tails, presumably from neoprene. http://www.otterbaysuits.com/Mermaidhome.htm
There's also this suit (http://cdn3.bigcommerce.com/s-aeyni5y9/products/399/images/4082/mermaid_3544_008__74888.1407282793.1280.1280.jpg?c =2), which is silicone. It doesn't cover the shoulders though, just comes up over the boobs. It has a zipper entry (http://cdn3.bigcommerce.com/s-aeyni5y9/products/399/images/2465/3544_5__40343.1403287051.1280.1280.JPG?c=2) up the back. ( better shot (http://cdn3.bigcommerce.com/s-aeyni5y9/products/399/images/2477/3544_1__08212.1403288426.1280.1280.JPG?c=2) of the chest area)
Pattern wise, it's not too complicated. It's basically a jumpsuit with a tail in place of legs. Or, you could graft a tail pattern onto the bottom of a commercial one-piece pattern.
In standard swimsuit spandex, it would probably be feasible to enter the suit as you do a one piece swimsuit: through the neck hole. It would add some difficulty to getting in or out of the tail though.
In anything but spandex (neoprene/latex/silicone) a back zipper would be a neccessity.

Yeah, the tail was made by a company that rents out special effects props to companies. I bet that tail pops up in all kinds of odd places.

No, my tail is one piece.
And it is so awesome! Like I said before I love how it hugs your body. Looks so much more real than a regular silicone tail.

Oh wow- so sorry to give out incorrect info. I really thought I saw two pieces there, did they start off as two?
I just hate that I gave out wrong info, wonder why I figured that?

No worries! :D
It started out with an opening across the tummy area, but then I went back and filled it in. It was always a one-piece. Maybe that's where the confusion came from.
LOL, I love that extended version commercial! Way funnier than the one that made it to TV, LMAO! :rotfl: Of course, it's for poptarts, which are marketed towards kids, and of course the extended version is more relevant to adults.

ye it's kinda funny, even if all that "Dracula=vampire" bs is an offense for every Romanian (and Bram Stoker was a moron).
At least there's hope for that lame trope to be forgotten eventually, now that we have Twilight haha.

Wow this is so cool! ^-^ Miyu is almost right - it's actually a ballet leotard I'm wearing. It's a little velvet-y on the front which makes it really dark instead of shiny. So cool that you guys like it! =D
Find a pattern for a swim suit, get a really long piece of paper, and just extend the bottom into a tail? it you have a zip or velcro in the bottom you'll be able to get your fin in and out too.
I don't think it'd be that hard provided you have the patience.
Ah, I was close! I just adore ballet/dance leotards and bodysuits, they are the perfect clothing for so many applications, and you can find them in almost any colour!

Weeki Wachee Marla is the one that made the orca suit! It was fantastic. Her husband was even wearing a T-shirt that said "Team Orca".
