Lake Mermaids??

So, my friend and I are very picky about our tails blending in with our surroundings. We don't want to make a tail looking exactly like our native fish, but we want our colors to not stick out; We don't want bright parrot fish colors, as we live surrounded by lakes, (Winnipesaukee, Newfound, Ossipee). What colors should we use to make our tails more versatile, as we'd like to one day also bring them into the ocean.

I would think green would be a good idea. Maybe mixed in with some browns or silver?
There's quite a lot of native freshwater fish that still have some fancy colours going on.
If you want to stay away from bright colours but still want to stand out you can try patterns like stripes or spots.

The yellow and/or black would really pop with the other colours!
