Would everyone prefer Mustang Island or Port Aransas? The're basically equidistant, and if we have people willing to house others, prices of lodging shouldn't be too large of an issue, either.

Mustang Island State Park allows camping, which would be convenient & inexpensive. There is a campsite at Port Aransas too, but it's geared more towards RVs - and it's spitting distance from the ship channel.

I may be able to get us a deal on hotel rooms. I just need 4-6 weeks firm notice of how many rooms and when. Depending on the area will determine the hotel. I work at a Holiday Inn Express so I get an employee rate at all IHG hotels...Intercontinental, Crowne Plaza, Hotel Indigo, Even Hotels, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Staybridge & Candelwood...but the company I work for also owns a couple Marriot properties so I may have access to those as well. If I can get us a few rooms and people shared it would really keep the costs down.

I'm seriously hoping to have the money for a MerNation tail when I get my tax refund but I gotta see how much that will be...even if I don't I still have my fabric tails.

Just did a price check on rooms for arrival Friday June 5th and departing Monday June 8th just to see what they are for everyday people. Currently the Candlewood Suites Naval Base location is at $118 plus taxes a night. I'll have to keep checking for my employee rate but still $118 isn't bad if you share.

Just learned that the job basically fired me without telling me. Lovely.....and I'm gonna go to austin in a few weeks to use my dad's car for driving test....but...I may not have an apartment come march because my dad very conveniently "forgot" to send his paycheck stubs to the leasing office. He's our cosigner for our lease....SoooooYEAH....and then I might end up in Austin at my grandparents for a while if I don't get an apartment here...so...I dunno. And thanks for the ride offer! I hate sharing my good news now but if I don't I'm afraid I'll forget later. My mom and I will be bringing my cousin's 3 kids with us and my brother may be joining us along with his son and wife. It seems to be turning into a family vacation for me. I haven't had one of those since Christmas 1999.

Are we looking for privacy? Or places for good photo shoots? Or underwater photos? Corabelle and I have a few favorite places. But it all depends on what everyone is looking for. The Texas State Aquarium is currently working on a HUGE expansion and because of that the dolphin exhibit is closed. They've docked the price to $18 per adult. I don't know the prices for children off the top of my head.

Not yet, I believe we'll be investing in one soon. But I don't know if we'll have it in time. The water here isn't very clear. But Corabelle said there's a place in rockport where the water is nice. But everything here is pretty close by. So I think we can adventure to a few beaches.

Hotel room update. The prices of the hotels doesn't seem to be getting any better the closer to the date we get. I may be looking at other hotel options myself.

I just called and the best westerns are almost full.....and the campground there is full. I put in a message (email and phone) for them to call me back and perhaps I can find out if there will be any likelihood of any first come first serve space then...but its not looking great. So if anybody knows anyone in the area and we could all squeeze into a VRBO rental, that might be an option!! LOL (vacation rentals by owner dot com). Let me know if you're interested and how many people in your party and I can scout it out. So far here's what it looks like: lots of places around there, for about $125-150/night with a 2 night minimum stay. Me and my kids are clean and well behaved, and we can put people on the floor if we need to! :D

Ok I was finally able to figure out a good phone number for M.I. State park. Their water and electric sites are all booked up, but its ten dollars per night to camp out on the beach, so we think we are going to do that! I have a room available. Not sure how many it will sleep. It was made for 2adults & 2kids but I'm unsure what the beds will be as it is what we in the hotel industry call a "flow through" room which means it is whatever the hotel has available that fits your needs. It should at least have a single king bed and a sofa sleeper because it is a Candlewood Suites. The room is $45 a night with taxes. Nights available are June 5th to 7th departing the morning of June 8th. I will keep the reservation until June 1st then I'm cancelling it if no one wants it.

should we have a quick chime-in of everybody who is coming and what their room plans are. maybe we should have a quick bio of everybody and we can see if we should share that room, if it would make it easier to hang out and plan stuff or if everybody does their own room-thing and we just arrange hang outs at the beach or wherever, whether its through a group text or what. I think we need to just pull it all together now and figure out what we're doing!

as of right now me my husband and my seven and 10-year-old are planning to come down Friday night and camp on the beach, and I'm just kind of waiting for people to tell me when and where to show up to do the mermaid hang out thing! :D

if it's a small group and they don't mind my kids but I would be up for sharing a room we can sleep on the floor we are not picky.

Okay, I think I'm starting to flip out a bit but can we nail down some details please? Which beaches? What times?

I ask because I've been putting together a budget for the trip. If we go to a beach within Mustang Island State Park there is an entrance fee of $5 daily for everyone over 13yrs old.

It is also $10 to get a sticker to park your car on one of many of the beach accesses which may be easier for us mers due to large fin toting. As a destination to meet, MISP (abbreviated) would probably be the easiest landmark, since it isn't too large a stretch of beach for us to not spot each other. Corabelle mentioned knowing some good spots to take pictures and a pool.

I took a look at the Visit Corpus Christi website to look at the beach options and there were 3 beaches that stood out from all the others.

1. Mustang Island State Park
2. McGee Beach (surf isn't as rough here)
3. North Beach

North & McGee are have no entry fee.

Okay ladies, I have just received information from several reliable sources that we may need to rethink our meet-up dates. As most have you have already heard there's been some trouble between some biker gangs in Waco. However, this is just the beginning of the troubles. The word has gone out and biker gangs from across the nation are starting to gather. Sources have intel that the gangs will be headed to Galveston, San Leon, Texas City & Corpus Christi. There is no clear dates as to when the real trouble will happen or when it will be over. Law enforcement agencies are on high alert but still I'm worried that we may want to rethink our meet-up.

I won't deny it, the weather has been bad here. Thunderstorms flooding and tornado warnings. The city doesn't know how to function when rain is involved. Flooding is terrible and driving a vehicle anywhere when it floods like this is dangerous.

We can provably swim at the YWCA here in the case where swimming outdoors proves difficult. I've been there before with Mermaid Ruka and it was enjoyable. It's a 12 ft pool and can be rented out hourly for a reasonable price.

If everyone has their heart set on being outdoors on the beach, there is a fun little place called Fajitaville on North Beach. The tables and bar of the restaurant open up to the sea.. It just seems like it would be fun to hang out there in tails and have the chance to eat something if we wanted. There's also a ferris wheel there. Might be fun.

Another outdoor option: Beach with a pool. This is at the Holiday Inn on North Padre. It's a lot of fun. There's a bar called The Sand Bar attached to the pool. It's saltwater and about 8.5 feet. There's also a hot tub and smoothie shack nearby for cheap snacks.

I'm local and I write about community events for the city paper, so I'm just sharing my insight as a resident beachbum and mermaid.

I can even pitch the meet up as a story for the local media if the group is interested in publicity. Just let me know!

I just got word from mother that we wont be going down. Partially due to weather but also because she just got news that she's being promoted and her training starts Monday. 1 day of possible beach time isn't worth 2 days on the road. Perhaps next year. ☹

Okay.. Corabelle here again. I apologize for being quiet on the forums at times, just not too comfortable with posting too much yet. Anyways.. just so we're all on the same page.

Who is still coming? Can we get a fin count please? Is this meet up still happening? Should we reschedule? Just because it isn't happening this weekend, doesn't mean we have to wait until next year.

If everyone is okay with me taking some responsibility, I am confident I can organize a Meetup here in Corpus Christi for this summer. Yes the weather is bad now, but it will improve. The only things I really need from everyone are a window of dates, a proposed budget, desired water source (public pool.. Private pool.. Resort pool.. City beach.. private hotel beach.. State beach etc. ) and of course the ability to be flexible.

I mentioned potentially making the meet up an opportunity for some publicity in my last post, but no one responded. I have ties to the local media here, and I'm sure they would love to do a story on us. If there are any shy mers in the pod don't worry, I don't mind being a spokes mer. I've done plenty of interviews, and have experience in front of a camera. But I won't arrange for that unless I have everyone's approval.

If a statewide mer meet up isn't going to happen this year, then so be it... That just means I'll have a whole year to plan. :) please let me know if this is something you guys would support, if it happens and turns out well, I'd like to explore the option of making it an annual event. Thoughts?

ok i called the holiday inn on North Beach and the gal i talked to said they don't have any sand bar saltwater pool like what Corabelle described and I'm looking at the website for holiday inn on South Padre and I don't see anything like that either. :(
Fajitaville does not have a swim up bar but looks sort of fun (just no tail opportunities unless we hang out on the beack). I don't really care where we meet but we should probably pick something soon! I was never much of a leader so if somebody that is familiar with the area just tells me where and when I'll put all my trust in them and just show up! I can be there anytime Saturday and early part of Sunday! if not, that's cool...me and my family will just be there hanging out cuz we're planning on going to the beach anyway. so even if we don't meet up then it wouldn't be tragedy but i sure would like to meet some of y'all! :D

I dont know why they would tell you that... They probably didn't want to give you any info about it unless you were booking a room there at their hotel.

You don't need to be a guest to swim in their pool... I've done it several times (in a tail too) and never had a problem.

I'm still going. I've had to move to an area where I have little to no cell reception. I'm still game for going. Sadly, I don't know any public pools, but we can still swim in the gulf. It's just after a full moon so we'll need to watch for rips, but I think there are enough sandbars we should be ok.
Maybe next year we should do a more central Texas meet like last year at Krause so more people are able to attend.

Well just me and Meara showed up, but we had fun! We swam at Mustang Island State Park beach, it was a nice beach with some wave action. Visibility was pretty low, about three feet. Saw some goatfish and another stripey fish, a little blowfish and whatever tiny minnow things near the beach. She freaked out a couple people with her awesome dorsal fin and a few kids got to see and ask questions. We went out for pizza afterwards and went our own separate ways.

I think having a big pool meetup would be more fun, we could hang longer without risking sunburn, visibility would be better for pics and such. She's trying to organize something big for next year; I'm looking forward to it.

If we manage to do anything, I'd want it to stay DFW-based (since everything has been down south, we need to have some up here!). Maybe I could do something for Clear Springs scuba park in Terrell. I wanted to do our June meet there, but we had a couple issues getting a straight answer out of them (and their service sucks according to nearly every review they have). Apparently they allow tails. I'd have to do a trial run there and talk to them more to make sure they're okay with tails- especially if it's a big pod meet.

I'd wait and see if anyone else wants to weigh in on having a second pod meet this summer. I mean I love having mermaid meets, no doubt about it (it's why I started the monthly DFW meet thread) but I want more than just a couple of us! I want a whole frigging pod swarming the area!!! :D I'd feel iffy about going thru all the work to do this and only a couple mers show up. But that's just me.

i agree, i mean most of the places suggested i am not really familiar with, trying to find middle groud would feel more fair towards the group i feel. although my main thing is probably that i would prefer to show up once i have a tail, i will just feel more comfortable that way.
