I have to admit, the pic of that lobster tail is crazy impressive. Has anyone seen it in person?

Really interesting design. I like it.

It's a stunning piece of art, and it moves so realistically in the videos I've seen. I also like his new Orca tail he's posted online! Love seeing a variety of tail designs and sea creature inspirations, and the orca just looks so realistic.

I doubt he'll reproduce the lobster style for the public to buy, which is a shame...kinda hoping his orca design gets released for sale though, but I'd also like to try and make my own maybe based off more local sea life here such as seals or porpoises so I can fit into my own habitat hehe and of course make it more personal.

But yeah crazy good! :) I'm not a huge fan of most of Mertailor tails as they just don't appeal to me nor move very well, but these two stunning pieces most certainly do!

Can I just go back to this statement and say by 'nor move very well' I do NOT mean they don't 'move' well per se, but that they don't fit into what I personally find aesthetically pleasing the majority of the time...just my opinion :)

Thought I better add that in case I offended anyone on here! I by no means imply to.

Anyway back to the topic...

Beautiful, creative tail!

I can see it's a lobster, but still I can't help but think of a butterfly's wing when I see the fluke.

01-04-2015, 04:17 PM
That should get an award for originality.

Next up someone needs to try and create an Ursula inspired Octopus tail/legs that are swimmable! ;) hehe

Lobster tail looks very heavy and lots of drag. I bet she is a very strong swimmer.

01-04-2015, 11:18 PM
I'm not sure it's heavy, with thin enough silicone and the right coloring even the thinnest material can look like heavy armor

I think it looks fantastic! a well made piece by the looks, it reminds me of this picture I've always loved :) 26309 I'd like to see the mantis shrimp done that way

I love the Mantis Shrimp! a tail inspired by that would be mind blowing

I love Merins',Hers is beautiful, love to see one with the segmented fluke and armoured carapace though:)

01-05-2015, 09:18 AM
Hard to tell from the pic or the vid; is the body segmented as well?

Buggy but gorgeous!

that lobster tail is the BOMB. oh my goodness. are there any more lobster/shrimp looking tails? i wonder...

Credit where credit is due, this thing is sick in person.

01-07-2015, 08:26 PM
Yeah I saw it in person and took some wicked pics on Chris's camera but the pics have yet to surface...

I actually found it super creepy. I dont mean that in an insulting way either. Just creeped me out lol. seemed like something from a horror movie lol

well.. :P lobsters aren't very glamourous IRL either lol.

but the fact it looks JUST LIKE the real thing looks super amazing.

Remember this from Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide?

That thing is pretty dang cool, I will say. Although the zoology nerd in me is a little weirded out, as lobsters don't actually have tails; that's their stomach. Still! Very cool.
(And somebody get me on the horn when someone figures out how to make tentacles you can swim in!)

I like the design, though not the color... Maybe one of those beautiful royal blue lobsters would make a cool tail. Still, props to the Mertailor for executing this so beautifully.

Arn't shrimp blue until they are boiled?

01-08-2015, 08:58 AM
Wow, in your photos you can really see the details on the sculpt. The tendrils (not sure what they're called :P) are very unique and a neat touch too...not a tail I'd buy, but definitely one to admire!

01-08-2015, 09:28 AM
It was pretty neat, at Merfest they said it was designed by Robert Short.

Just wait until someone does an Isopod tail....

01-09-2015, 03:21 AM
Huge props on an incredibly amazing tail!

Just wait until someone does an Isopod tail....

I find it slightly disturbing too.
No idea why, because I think lobsters are awesome.

A dry only tail I assume?
Still, really cool, the detail is amazing.

There's a link to a video of it underwater on the first page ;)

01-09-2015, 04:00 AM
well snap!
That's even more awesome!

Have you seen a real lobster swim?
Those guys shoot like rockets, it's almost impossible to film them full speed, hence why all videos on them only show them walking.
(and I couldn't dig further, because all the video search results were stuff like "how to kill a lobster" and other fishing crap)

01-09-2015, 07:25 AM
A while ago I discussed with an online friend about the possibility for making a naga dry-tail for moving on land. My idea could also be used for a isopod or lobster-like tail. I could post some sketches of it when I got home from work. If anyone is interested.

01-09-2015, 08:46 AM
Make a dedicated thread.
I'd love to see a possibility for land locomotion in a long tail.

Arn't shrimp blue until they are boiled?

It might depend on the type of shrimp, but when I catch wild live shrimp, they are a brownish tan color.

Crawfish could also be a good source of inspiration. I remember catching some pretty crawfish in a creek that had black stripes on their legs. Don't worry everything I catch I release. I don't even like eating seafood (although I do eat calamari).

Here is a site I just found called the "Crayfish and Lobster Taxonomy Browser". It has just about an unlimited amount of crayfish and lobsters that you can take inspiration from. http://iz.carnegiemnh.org/crayfish/NewAstacidea/index.asp - I am not sure how many have a photo with the description, but you can google the name of them and find photos.

I think I personally like scaled tails, but I would have to see a more colorful tail like this to know for sure, as I too am not exactly a fan of the coloring. Like I would want to see a tail that looks like this Shasta Crayfish:

This is cool. Very creative and wonderfully conceptualized.
IT's nice to see new work in unique directions.

However....does it strike anyone else as odd that the video he made uses a similar format and the exact same song as one already created by another tailmaker?

Video A:

Video B:

I mean...obviously he has talent.
BUt he picks the exact same song? lol....i just thought it was weird.

01-18-2015, 08:13 AM
Maybe it's one of the songs free to use on youtube? Probably it's just coincidence.

01-19-2015, 01:14 PM
Clearly you're both using the same limited software. What do you expect?
And like Yulia said, it's a popular song that youtube offers for free.
