I am US based. I am a large athletic man, 6'4" 236 lbs. I have extensive diving and long distance swimming experience, and love to be in the ocean with the sea creatures swimming with them. I have long been accused of being a merman for the time I spend in the water (I am enchanted by mermaids, a beautiful little handpainted one is my figurehead on my boat, I am a licensed captain). Anyway I love the monofin concept and trained years ago with monofin techniques.

I would like an affordable monofin for strong fast swimming workouts as well as relaxed free dive communing with my fellow fish and crustaceans. I have looked at finis trainer, competitor, and wave readily available here. I have size 13-14 feet that are fairly wide. My most comfortable shoe is a 13-3EEE I am also a very capable design engineer with good tools and could make my own.

I cringed at the price of the competitor, was ok with the trainer. Lets say 250 dollars a fair limit.

Looking for a powerful swimming fin available US for a strong swimmer with large feet. Am I on the right track with the trainer?? Or steer me to a do it yourself?

I would be grateful for any thoughts.

If you can get one, I'd go with the Hydra.
Way better than lesser Finis ones and more affordable than the Competitor.

Hi Caine! I'm thinking a DIY polycarbonate fin is going to be your best bet. I have trouble finding fins that are comfy and have been experimenting with different configurations. Since you are a big guy, I wouldn't go any thinner than 0.25". There are a few different methods to accommodate your feet and I'm still trying to refine the best way...there are some monofin threads here to help, too!

Drop by the Introduce Yourself thread and say hi!

Leaderfins makes a good cheap fiberglass monofin. You can pick the hardness of the blade, for a bigger guy I'd go with hardness three or four for you. I free dive in the open ocean and that's what I use.
