Hi I'm looking for advice on how to find/create opportunities (probably volunteer) storytelling myths, fantasy tales and legends dressed in a very simple mermaid or water nymph related costume. Also looking for advice on materials to present, miscellaneous tips. I want to create a persona that entertains both children and adults. Act would not involve swimming....

I do them for the library, schools, museums, and multicultural festivals :) Some are books, some are oral stories I tell with the aid of photos I've printed, and some are for little kids using finger puppets.

Thank you for your reply, AniaR. :) I really want to do this. Do you do a mer character, with a background story. Or do you focus more on the telling? (I like the idea of using little puppets, and pictures. I thought of making a mermaid or water themed puppets to "assist" me in reading/telling stories to kids, but I'm not sure how to make them.)

I know Mermaid Harmony also does storytelling at libraries.

Yeah I do! I have my backstory as Harmony but don't make a story time out of it, I just tell a lot of mermaid stories from books, lore etc. Just have fun with it, honestly googling story time ideas is a great place to start.

Like Harmony says, google story time ideas and then just make it mermaidy :) I used to work at a library and we did storytelling sessions all the time for kids, with different themes - the basics are the same, it's just a different theme and a different costume.

Are you familiar with the Great Courses? They're dvds or audiorecordings of not-for-credit college level classes, on various subjects. I really enjoyed one on Classical Mythology, and bought a new one on The Art of Storytelling: From Parents To Professionals by Hannah Harvey, a professional storyteller. I am only two disks into it, and I am learning so much (plus, there are clips of Professor Harvey telling stories to illustrate her points)! I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to improve their ability to tell stories.
