View Full Version : VT/NH/Upper NY mers?

I've seen a few other threads asking about mers in CT/MA/ME/RI and I haven't really heard of many mers around VT/NH/Upper NY. Come to think of it, I have only heard of one mer in my state (VT) alone.

So, are any of you huddled up in your warm bathtubs in this cold wasteland?

I grew up in Syracuse, NY, and am still up in that area quite often, although I'm in the NYC area now :)

Oh awesome :D I grew up here in Corinth, VT, where I reside right now. It's in central VT, but I'm 2 miles from NH every day. I don't get to travel over to NY very much, though I wish I could.

Don't worry, you're not missing much, haha. I might be visiting my aunt and uncle in Brownsville VT this spring, though, so maybe we can do a meetup, if you'd like :)

That'd be hella cool. I'm trying to get my best friend into mermaiding next month, because hopefully I'll have my Hydra by then ad my mother said she would take us to the aquatic center. (it's about 50 miles away- Not fun.)

Hopefully by springtime I'll have my neoprene tail all made and painted. Crossed fingers~!

I'm an upstate NY mer!
Currently tail-less but I'll be making (or at least trying to make) my first fabric/neoprene tail(s) once I get home in June.

@Spindrift yup :P the water doesn't really get "warm" ever unfortunately, but oh well
not sure if there are any other mers that far upstate (on mernetwork or not)...

Central NH, The water here usually isn't warm enough to swim in until 4th of July. I have a new fabric tail to try!

I live in NYC :) Though I'm just now wanting to join fellow mers, pretty excited! Are there any meets in june or july?

Seraphina Suds

There's always a meetup for the coney island mermaid parade! That's June 20 I think. And I'm planning something for July on the mid hudson valley.

That sounds amazing! I'm hoping my tail arrives before the 20th, but I'm doubting it. I would definitely go to mid hudson valley! :) Sounds fun

Yes, the Coney Island Mermaid Parade is the 20th...I am probably going to be a judge this year!

Man, I wish I could make it to the parade again. I went... that one time it was almost cancelled. And saw some of you guys there. But I'll be in Seattle/Vancouver/Alaska this year. :x

I just moved to Cali from Saratoga. I visit there often enough to see friends and family. There's another mer in Saratoga - I'd see her leaving the YMCA as I was entering with her tail but never had the guts to talk to her.

much love, one love - Moana

You can ask Harlem Mermaid on Facebook. She swims somewhere that you need a membership to, but they allow her tail.

Hi, Tolgarr, I used to live in Norwich, VT. My mom just sold the old family homestead, and moved down to New London, NH (near Lake Sunapee). I am in Massachusetts.

Venilia, I was going to suggest you check with Harlem Mermaid, or Lanai, the New York Mermaid. Both are in NYC.

Seraphina Suds is having a meetup in July, I am having one in Marlborough, MA in late June and hopefully one on Cape Cod in August, plus there are several Coney Island meetups planned.

You've got another mer-to-be in the far upstate NY region right here. No tail yet so I'm hesitant to call myself a mermaid just yet. But I've got a monofin and access to a pool that opens on the rare occasions that we have decent weather for it. Really hope we stop getting rain daily soon.

I don't know if this counts as double posting since it has been a few days and this post is unrelated to my previous one.

That said, I had heard rumors around about an Upstate NY meetup, but when I looked up the location I was disappointed to find it was in an area I would have called Downstate. So I looked up the definitions of the regions and it turns out no one can agree where they are except that NYC is definitely Downstate. So to clear things up a little, I am apparently in the Finger Lakes region of NY as defined by this image from Wikipedia (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Map_of_New_York_Economic_Regions.svg)

Where in the Finger Lakes are you? I'm in Syracuse quite often as my folks still live there.

No offense at all meant to anyone on here, but since this forum seems to be completely visible to anyone on the internet who happens across it I haven't wanted to post my exact location. Maybe I'm old fashioned or paranoid for that. But Syracuse is absolutely within reasonable driving distance from where I am, although I have never actually driven myself there. I visited a lot as a kid since we had close family friends in the area.

I should also mention that soon I will have family in Vermont, though I can't even remember exactly where.

Fair enough. If you want, next time I'm up north I'll PM you, and if you want to try to do a get together we can :)

:swoon: Yes, that would be amazingly awesome! I am trying not to fangirl too hard, but here's me with just a few monofin practice swims and you have a gorgeous tail and experience and everything and I've never met another mer in person before and it's just so exciting and- :fallover:

I'll stop now before I scare you off.

Takes a lot more than that to scare me off, lol ;) I should probably worry about scaring you off. I can be a bit rough around the edges.

Right now it looks like I'll be in Syracuse again around August 22nd. If you can make it to Elmira, I'll be there for Twin Tiers Comic Con on August 14-16ish. For TT I'll be wearing normal cosplay with my group, but I'd be happy to bring the tail along and you can check it out, if you want. Plus if there's a hotel pool I'll be all up in that.

I might also be in Binghamton over a couple of weekends in July, but I'm not sure yet.

Ciriun, I don't know how close you are to the Hudson Valley, but check further down the Group forum, there is a post about a Mer meetup July 25th, at a lake in a state park in NY. Maybe you could get to that, and meet more mers! :yay: :thumbs-up::dance:

Ciriun

The con sounds really fun, I'll see if I can make it. I've never been to a comic con before, but I have a cosplay I can wear. Nothing mer related. Right now my summer schedule is pretty open, but that could change if I get a job at any point.

Echinacea, I'm pretty far from that area actually. :( Is it an annual thing? With any luck by next year I'll be more confident with both fin swimming and driving outside my little comfort zone.

Sorry for the double post but I just wanted to comment on how weird and cool it is to hear familiar areas finally being mentioned on here. I grew up in northern Pa and the closest mall to me for most my life was about an hour away in Elmira the Arnot Mall. I now live outside of Rochester about 2 hours or less from Syracuse.

I'm a vermont mer :) I live right around the burlington area. I'm in the process of making my own silicone tail, but I was getting impatient waiting for the supplies to arrive so I just made a lycra mermaid tail for my first tail! I'm going to swim with it at north beach at some point this weekend

And sorry Theta for not making it to the con. I haven't been doing so hot on getting to cons lately. :/

I know this is kinda irrelevant, but I live near Buffalo NY, and it Actually isn't that cold during the summer. during July, its normally in the 70s at night, 80s by day. If thats cold, then I dont know what to think. I know it isn't as warm as say, texas, but it isn't -50 all the time. Sorry I got so fired up, it just really ticks me off when people say its really cold where I live.

And do any mers live near buffalo? I am pretty sure I am the only one :(. If yes, PLEASE TELL ME!!!

Hi, I hope i'm in the right pod here. I'm looking around for other merfolk who know the rochester area, who might be able to point me to some tail friendly locations (be it beaches or pools) to swim? I want to get into the mercommunity but not until I know I have places to swim. Can anybody help?

Hi! Im also out of the Rochester area. Unfortunately I haven’t found any public pools that allow tails. I’ve done photos by the lake but not actually swim. Sadly I don’t get a lot of actual swim time around here unless it’s in a private pool.

Hello!!! I’m not in Rochester but I’d be happy to travel out there for meetups with other mers! I’m based out of the Syracuse area, I found a local small college pool that lets me use my tail during open swim! The lake here also has a “secret local” swim spot that doesn’t have any rules against fins/floats/flippers/tails that I’ve swam at successfully. The water is shallow and a bit murky for photos but if it’s not a windy day you can see about 5-7 feet to the bottom.

Nice to meet you, Mermaid Tory! Sodus point is about 45 mintues from me, so if sometime in the distance future (when i've actually sorted out this little idea of mine to become a mermaid, have made a tail etc) a mer-meet up sounds like fun! I did just tonight notice that a Monroe family YMCA offered a FREE mermaid swim class, which I find optomistic and kinda exciting. You'd think that if they're offering this class, and it's free, they would be willing to accept mermaids. Kinda seems like they're encouraging mertraffic.
Unfortunately, it's tomorrow (the 21st) and without a tail or monofin, going is kinda pointless for me. However, here's the link and address if it's of any interest to you for whatever reason.

Speaking of swimming in lakes, I have a curious question. My family frequently goes camping over the summer and sometimes early fall, and I was thinking I might get some swim time in that way. However, campgrounds have their own rules (my brother once got rebuked by a park ranger for riding a minibike, which were not allowed) and though there are sometimes campsites with little private alcoves to the water, do you think a park ranger still might get mad? I mean I could always call and ask but I was wondering if anyone has had any luck in the finger lakes area?

Hi! Just out of curiosity (I'm not back up north that much now, but my folks are still up in CNY and I take my tail when I visit) which college, and which lake? Asking for a friend.

(I'm the friend, the friend is me)

Have you tried tail swimming at Green Lakes at all?
