Spandex and Silicone
Getting the news that I wouldn't have enough money for a silicone tail this year was disappointing at first then I started seeing the positive side of it. One of them being the fact that I'll be going to my first Broadway show with my baby brother in May because I now have the money to do so. I'll also get to do other cool things like make my own fabric tails of various styles and designs.
This brings me to my first tail project of this year. I have a silver spandex tail I never finished in 2014 so I'm gonna complete it now. However I'm gonna do it differently than planned before. I want to cover it in GE Clear Silicone to give it a look and feel kinda like a dolphin.
Question: Do I apply the silicone before sewing the spandex or do I wait until after it is sewn together so the side seams can be covered with silicone too?

Wow Broadway that's amazing!
I really wish you good luck with your tail project and your idea to make it feel like dolphin skin is freezing!!! Can't wait to see how this will turn out!
And for your tail in my opinion you should put silicone after sewing the spandex so you'll have a better looking realistic effect to both vision and touch ;)
Let me know how this turns out! 😊

I would do it before, and then go over the seams. At least that's what I did with my neoprene tail.
Just a note, with the silicone, make sure you don't get the one with moldicide. That stuff is just too dangerous especially if you're using spandex.
Also you can mix a few drops of water into your silicone to make it more spreadable.

Thanks for the moldicide warning. I not thought about that factor.
Does the silicone have enough stretch to it for being spread over the spandex before sewing?
-
You need to stretch the fabric slightly before you spread the silicone regardless of when you do it.

Okay, so I'm finally gonna do a tester piece for my Spandex/Silicone tail. My hope for this tail is that the combination of the silver/grey spandex under a layer or two of GE Silicone will create a dolphin like effect. If this is the case I will cover my entire silver/grey spandex tail in the silicone and even add a dorsal fin.
I have 2 additional tails in the planning stages that will be spandex tails painted with Lumiere paints and one will hopefully even have some Tulip Glow-In-The-Dark paint on it. Though the the tail may not get much glow time it will be a cool tail to have just in case a night time swim presents itself. I'll just have to buy a large UV light for charging the tail as I don't think the little one to charge my ring will enough to do the job.

Really interested to see if the spandex silicone mix works caz if it does I might use it rather than having to ship neoprene in

I did my initial tests on spandex. You just have to really let it sink in.
