Wanted to make a topic for tops that use bra bases. What bases to use, what you can do with them, how to best attach latex, fake flora, shells, netting, what ties work best, ect.
I'll start by talking about the bras that I know are some of the highest quality adhesive bras- Nubras. You will want to use the Seamless NuBra, as if you tried to attach something to the original it would just damage the silicone, and the bra would be useless.
The adhesive on these bras do not last, even when just using for formal wear and taking proper care of them. I think they could be used for dry photoshoots for a while, but I am skeptical of them staying stuck in the water for long. The salt or chlorine in the water would most likely destroy the adhesive faster than normal use. I think it would be best to use these bras either for dry shoots only or to use them as a base for comfort reasons (even plastic shells are NOT comfortable!). I believe spirit gum would hold them on in the water, but I know that those have used spirit gum for this purpose said they needed several tubes (they're small) to get the tops to hold. It is up to you if you believe it is worth the investment! The other option is to add straps- you could use fishing line (as Hannah Fraser uses), or other more mermaidy things like netting.
To me, when you pay for a NuBra, you are paying for the quality of the adhesive. I have bought off brand adhesive bras- you get what you pay for! They end up being more like bra inserts. However, if the adhesive is just going to wear away eventually, and you're going to be using spirit gum and/or straps, why not go for a cheaper version? Before there were only the silicone ones, then yesterday at Target I ran across the equivalent of the Seamless NuBra- it's a brand called Fashion Forms, and the bra is the Ultralight. It's only $16.99, as apposed to the $40 (+s&h, $30 if you find a deal on eBay)! To me I think this would be a good alternative.
As the page only shows the top, I took a picture of the box so you know what to look for in the store:

I'm excited! What's your opinion on this?
So what are your ideas for bra based tops? Share designs, ideas, materials, ect! It's all about the boobie love in this topic- and not those uncomforatable shells!

there is no way i could wear a adhesive bra.I wish i could but my bust is way to big and i need to much support. But i am sure it could work for girls with a smaller bust and maybe you could tie a string or something to hold it even if the adhesive comes off.

Well the NuBra thing was more of a suggestion for a actual bra alternative for those who can wear it comfortably. This topic in general is for ANY kind of bras as bases :) How to decorate them, what materials don't get too waterlogged/saggy when swimming, what paint works best, all that kind of stuff! Also pics of any bra based tops are welcome and would be great :)
I see you made one! I like the tribal look that the stones give it- do they make it heavier though? The stone ornament in between also gives it that great tribal feel :)

thanks you and i tried swimming in the top to see and it just felt the same. Sort of a challenge not to use to much of the pearls because it's the heaviest thing on the top.The purple circles are just beads i got at Micheals arts and crafts they aren't that heavy but, if they were it would be a big help for me so i will sink in the water easier i seem to have a problem with water it loves me.. yet it spits me out when i try to stay down longer. :( I was hoping maybe when i get the mer-tail i might sink more as well.
The fish stone i couldn't resist at micheals either it was too pretty xD But my top base was an old Wire Bra i had for about a year and a half i sew it up nice and decorated it to look mermaid-ish ^^

You can get larger bottles of spirit gum if you can find a place that carries higher end theater make up and things like that,or at least I can here. The only complaint I know of is the pull on delicate parts( for lack of a better term) when removing and I can suggest if some one wants to try it useing one of the smaller pasties and covering the whole cup in spirit gum and applying it.It would protect parts and prob be enough to to glue hold it in place really well, just remember to use an cleaner on the skin to remove any oils before applying to everything so it sticks well :)

Use spirit gum remover to get it off rather than pulling.

Very true Nemo! If your not into the pain thing it's best to use to remover.Peel up the edge of the bra a bit, dip q tip into remover and run it along the seam where glue and flesh meets to get a fairly easy and painless removal :) It can be kinda repeditive but it's usually for the best.

The tops I am making are all bra based as is the one Raven created for me. In my opinion, it makes it easier to attach things and gives support to those who need it. Plus it can be ANY size as opposed to just a regular seashell bra, because seashells just don't come in the sizes some of us need.
Mainly, the only drawback is that covering the entire bra to make sure none of the color comes through, becomes very tedious when working with small items. Otherwise, there is no other way I'd rather do it :)

Couldn't resist! http://mer.yuku.com/domain/bypass/images/tongue.gif
Try coating with ALEX. You could lay down the first coat, then lay down a thin color coat. Then sew whatever you want to it.

I can understand that in the world of costuming. The bra I'm looking at making is going to be very very tedious! But it's only really worth it if you put the work in it to make it amazing! |
