I'm curious to see how the community views headdresses (or the lack thereof) on mermaid performers.
Do you think the more elaborate the headdress, the better?
Do you find something is lacking if no head adornments are worn?
Or do you not care about this aspect at all?
I like understatement, and head-dresses tend to get caught in my mermaid locks. I love how elaborate ones look, but when paired with elaborate tails I find it a bit much.
I opt for small clips with pearls or flowers or seashells - something to keep my hair out of my eyes but not be too obvious.
I love the look of headdresses on land, but I have no luck swimming with them. Like Kelda I find they get tangled in my hair or worse, end up falling out entirely.
I echo what's been said. I love elaborate headdresses; I think they add to the mystique. But I also really love the au naturale look with a simple hair clip. What I wear depends on the type of theatre I'm trying to create for each specific event.
I have never been able to keep a flowing headdress on in the water, whether it's in ocean currents or a shallow swimming pool. I've tried all the various tricks and tips to be found here on MN, but even simple headbands fall off when I go under! The only thing that stays is a tight elastic pearl headband with a single shell glued onto it. And that's uncomfortably tight. So I wear my elaborate headgear on land and take it off before I swim.
BTW, this poll is giving skewed results, because it doesn't allow the option of choosing a headdress (or lack thereof) specific to each occasion.
My accessories for water use are Medusirena style, they tie under the hair, and are made of things that don't tangle in your hair. I have a pretty elaborate crown that isn't water-friendly, and the only elaborate headdress I'd wear underwater is an Erte-style leather and bead piece that pretty much secures most of my hair. Though my mersona has dreadlocks, so not much tangles in there anyway XD
I wear hair clips usually, but it's just because my hair wet looks like wet hair and nothing special so with shells and some greenery it looks nicer, but yeah hair can get tangled,Lorelei is making me a headdress though and I"m super duper excited, and I'll pry just wear it for land things, but I'm still stoked.

Hmm, see, I love the look of elaborate headdresses, and it really helps put me in that "mermaid-y" mood, but when I had hair, headdresses would tangle in it (I'd only ever worn them on land), and now that I'm bald, well, I don't think much will stay on while swimming (except maybe a very tight elastic headband, I hadn't thought of that, so thank you Galene!!! :)). I did love to wear my simple shell clip while swimming when I had hair (I wore it for everyday wear as well).
LOL I love that last option for the poll!! :clap: I suppose that, technically speaking, having no hair would make most sense for some mytholgies of mer...
Haha I can't wear headdresses because I have boy short hair. I love how they look though! I always wondered if something like a circlet could work and stay on while swimming.
I voted that she should be bald! My hair is cut very short but not bordering on baldness. If I wear bald, then I'd need a proper fin hat to slice through the water when swimming instead of arms in front style. I feel it would be more natural to have a bald head with fins on it.
