Making Faux Seaglass!

So, I'm on spring break which means... MORE TIME TO MAKE CRAFTS! I'm working on making some faux seaglass since I am in Missouri and seaglass is kind of hard to come by here.:p Found lots of bottles and glasses in pretty colors for cheap at Michaels and Dollar Tree, so I wrapped them in towels and went to town with the hammer! One green/clear piece even came out perfectly shaped like a mermaid fluke, so I was pretty excited about that!!! I have a rock tumbler that I filled with coarse grit, sand, water, and the broken glass and I hope that in a few day's time I will have some beautiful glass to make into jewelry! Tomorrow I will open up the canister to see how everything is going, and hopefully will post pics! I only hope I can take the constant crunching and grinding noises of the tumbler without going nuts lol! :lol:

It's almost impossible to find where I live, so I actually considered making some too. I hope this works well for you :)

Thanks, OceanWhisper! I really hope that I can find some actual seaglass one day- this summer, I'm going to the beach, so I will definitely look for some! I opened the tumbler this morning to check on the glass, and I'm pleased with how its coming along. All of the sharp edges are worn down and rounded, and the glass is starting to look sort of frosted! It will definitely take a couple more days to get the effect I'm going for, though.

I'll be watching this thread! I had the thought of doing this too, as the colors I want out of seaglass aren't the easiest to find (blues/greens).

Just how big a rock tumbler do you have? I'm picturing something like a giant cement mixture sort of thing.:O_o: I'm sure I'm dead wrong, I've just never heard of, like, a consumer rock tumbler. Your results there look great!

It's actually a really small rock tumbler- I got it at Michaels. The barrel that the glass goes in is a little larger than a soda can, so I can't tumble that much at one time. When I was searching for tips on tumbling glass, I found instructions from someone who used a large cement tumbler to make a bunch of seaglass to scatter in a garden. I'm doing pretty much the same thing except on a smaller scale! :) And edible seaglass sounds yummy!!! Was it made from sugar, sort of like rock candy?

GAAAH I didn't known they sold rock tumblers at Micheals!! Guess what I'm buying next time I have a good coupon. :D I even have a bunch of glass beads I can make frosted, hmmm...

Wow! A day makes a really big difference! I checked on the glass first thing when I got up this morning, and this is what it looked like! Really frosty and pretty!!! :yay: I actually think I will take the glass out and rinse it off tonight and see if its done then! I tried several types of glass, but in my opinion the clear ones are coming out much prettier than the opaque glass. These are going to look beautiful once I wrap them in wire to make jewelry!

They sure do! The one I got is called the Smithsonian Rock Tumbler- works really well, but its definitely noisy lol! Also don't forget your 40% off coupon if you decide to get one! :D

I'm curious, does the method of painting glue onto glass pieces make nice faux seaglass? I've only seen it done with school glue, which I imagine wouldn't be swimmable but I wonder if it could be done with E6000?

I've heard somewhere that a mixture saltwater and lime [not the fruit] works too, and only takes like an hour to do??? I heard about this years ago and never got the chance to
