Is it worth it buying a silicone tail....

....when you don't plan on going pro?

I'm using tapatalk and search didn't pull anything up, so I'm sorry if this is a repeat or in the wrong place admins!!

I'm considering a silicone tail as I've been mermaiding for long enough I feel comfortable in a monofin and basic maneuvers and such, but I don't intend on doing gigs or going pro. I'm not confident enough or where I want to be weight wise to even consider it, haha. BUT I still want a silicone tail for the experience, the beauty, and the realism.

For those of you who aren't pro or don't plan on it, is a silicone tail worth it to you? Where you won't earn money back on it as an investment, do you still consider it worthwhile?

really, the only one who can answer that question is you! other's opinions dont really matter. if you're comfortable with spending the money and making that choice, good on yah!

I'm not a 'pro' or not in the amusement bussiness due my disabled status = can't earn money. But i owned a neoprene/silicone tail and waiting for my new full silicone tail. I just use it for recreational use, and if I get asked for something, I'll do it for free, lol.

I think if it's something you love and something you want, go for it. This is the response I usually give to people when they ask me about the money side of it:
The world may revolve around money, but I don't. Money allows me to do the things I like and this is something I like. Some people pay thousands of dollars to get tattoos and no one ever questions that. You'll never hear someone say "you spent how much on tattoos? Well can you make money off that?" And tattoos are usually the medium I compare tails to.

For me it doesn't matter too much if it cost $100 or $1000 if it's for something I truly enjoy and am passionate about then, yes, it's worth it. Even if I won't see a cent back from it.

I bought my tail with absolutely no intention of going pro. I sort of fell into gigs and things accidentally, lol, but I bought it just for me. [emoji4]

my case is a bit different because im making my silicone tail (but its just as expensive as buying a cheaper one tbh) and i would say it depends. Ive never seen a silicone tail as an investment, but as like.... a luxury item that i want to own. If i get return on it through gigs or what have you, great! But I'm not making it to get gigs. I'm making it to feel mermaidy as hell and take shelfies and make little kids believe in magic. (all of which i already do in my fabric tail, of course, but i also really enjoy the process of making my tail, and i want to have something a bit more durable and textured.)

I would say start saving. If you want it, then you want it. no need for return. If you take your time saving, you can work on getting the doubts out of your head, and by the time you have the money all saved up, you'll know for sure, right? i know several non-pro mers with silicone tails. some want to go pro and some dont and its all good!

"Worth it" is completely subjective.

So...

Will it make you happy?
Can you afford it without sacrificing necessities?

In my situation I'm not planning to go pro, and while I wouldn't say no to silicone tail the amount of maintenance they require feels like an awful lot of work for a hobby. And we have a large family on a single income, I would never be able to justify the cost.

Now if I won the lottery I'd be placing that order so fast, lol. If money were no concern, oh the things I'd treat myself to.

Like everyone mentioned, It's really up to you!

I was planning on getting a silicone tail more for me and that it's a dream of mine to own one. I was going to save up money for it but as a surprise birthday present this year, my fiancé and friends put in funds for my dream to come true! As for using my tail, I plan on pool lounging with it mostly and photo shoots. I never planned on going pro or using it for gigs, but if something like that arises, I'm already prepared bc I'll have a real tail! Also my niece loves mermaids and I love seeing her eye light up when I'm in my fabric tail. But I know I'll feel complete if I have a real silicone tail.

It's really goes down to you. If owning one will make you happy, if it's a dream of yours, then go for it!

Thank you all for your thoughts and insights. It's very helpful! I guess I'm so used to the "can you make money with it" thing I was doubtful. I think I'll take my time and save slowly. It's a dream, and dreams are worth striving for. <3

I had a silicone tail and was asked to go pro after. I never intended to go pro before that though, so I had a huge learning curve to get over.

one of my best friends spends thousands on cosplay. Does she make money?.... No. Is it worth it to HER?....Absolutely.
It's a big purchase and if you think it's worth it, then it's worth it. However (I think this has been mentioned in other threads) buying a fabric tail first allows you to get a feel for it and if you want to commit to that kind of purchase. I knew the moment I swam in a monofin it was something I wanted. Other people use a fabric tail, and it's just not for them

I've had my fabric tail for what feels like awhile. I have to repair it a lot because it is still a learning curve and chlorine is murder on fabric. For me, I like hobbies with a lot of work involved. I enjoy repairing my tail, and sadly it needs to be replace already haha. So I'm prepared and willing for the extra amount of work the silicone will require. It would make me feel much more mermaid-y than my fabric. Like the PP, the minute I put on my monofin I knew this was my "thing".

My reservations are also that I have few friends/family interested in participating in any way, so photo shoots aren't a goal either. I literally just want it for the way it makes me feel. XD

I promised myself a tail if I reached my goal weight, and I always keep my promises. I'm about 7lbs shy of that goal!

I do collect dolls, which is a luxury hobby on its own, so the price isn't terribly off putting just by virtue of it being a luxury.

My family, while initially critical of most of my interests, have grown accustomed to them and actually don't care/moderately support, so I'm hoping the classic "can you make a buck" won't even be an issue I'll have to deal with.

Would love to get a silicone tail someday, but it would be mainly for posing purposes. Fabric tails are nice for swimming, but a silicone tail looks better for posing in my opinion.
