My first silicone mermaid tail. (Long term project.)

Hi there!

So after two years of researching and writing things down, I have decided to start making my own silicone mermaid tail.
Since the materials are really expensive, I'm gonna take my time with it, collecting materials over time.

I gave myself the due date of april 2016 of august 2016 (Elf Fantasy Fair!), but I might be a lot faster, depending on financials ;)
I have started cutting out foam circles and realized that I will need about six times more that I have now..

I need some advise though, are these scales "thick" enough as they are, or should I glue two on top of each other?
I'm afraid they won't really show in the mold if they are not thick enough. (Gonna use some liquid plastic for that.) I took some pictures to give an idea about how thick they are now, and one of two put together. I still need to find a way to make those pictures smaller, I realize they are really huge..

And I have doubts about my monofin, thinking to get a Hydra Clear Flow or a Monovin Sport from Leaderfins. (comes in soft blade, medium, hard and extra hard.)

Would love your advices! :)

My scales are thinner than yours and they show up fine! I wouldn't worry about it :)

personally, and this is just my opinion, i would double the scales. But its really your choice on how you like your scales. Good luck:)

Thinner scales look more natural. If you look at a real live fish, the scales are paper-thin and you can't see raised edges (and if you see scales sticking out or "pineconing" that's a sign that the fish is severely ill). So I would definitely go with the thinner scales; it will look more natural and save you some material costs. Also, just an fyi, you'll want to be careful of undercuts in your mold--the way you have the scales laid out looks really nice (and the pattern is realistic), but there are gaps between a lot of them them that will be filled in by your mold material. You don't have to re-do the scales, you can easily fill those gaps in with some sulfur-free clay, or possibly even vaseline :)

I decided to leave te scales the way they are, so i'm not dubbeling them.
I bought some clay today to fill the gaps, but there are no ingredients on the packaging, the same goes for other brands I looked at, so I have no idea if there is sulfur in it. I bought it at a toy store because I think you dont let kids play with clay that has a ton of sulfer in it.

Maybe you guys can help me with this "sulfur problem"?

I got my monofin yesterday! I choose to go with the Hydra Clear Flow. It came in slightly damaged, I don't know if I'll be sending it back or not. Considering it'll end up in my tail so the scratches wont be visible.

I started on designing my fluke today, I don't know if I want the lower extra fin on the fluke or just keep it to the upper one. (:

So, I laid down work for a while, had some personal drama and on top of that my relationship took a turn for the worst.
But I started working on some stuff again. I made one of my hip fins out of clay and dit a headpiece.

When my paycheck comes I'll order AcrylCast and start making my molds, scale sheet was already finished.
I train every week with my monofin and its going great! :D
