I'm really excited to see this. I loved how the ice-cream tail turned out, so I can only imagine how beautiful this one will be!

I'm so excited for this, not many people attempt Ariel tails, and you make beaaauuutiifull tails. I can't wait to see how it turns out :yay:
Good luck Mizuko!
Cant wait to see this carrie ^^ soooo excited for you
Omg Mizuko!! U can't tell how exited I am seeing this come to life! :jawdrop: Going to spam this tread!
Test your dragonskin on those zoomers - I read the rubber smell is terrible and there may be curing/inhibition issues! I can't wait to see it!!!
I was thinking just yesterday about the possibility of a transparent Ariel fin; I'm glad to see that you're actually doing it! The glitter should do quite well to give the tail that modern-Disney-Princess sparkle!
The Zoomer-covered-with-scales approach seems an excellent idea; a smaller monofin to provide propulsion without drawing attention to itself. The final test of the tail fluke will come not only with the visual transparency but also with its motion; I trust the fluke material will be firm enough to appear to be providing at least some of the propulsion.
Just a little update;
the sheet of lexan and polyzap arrived yesterday! Just waiting on the zoomers! ^_^
Thanks for the update! I eagerly await further developments!
thanks for the updates! We are all waiting for more picture of Ariel and of the tail^^ I wish you all the luck that you'll need!!
Yay! My Zoomers arrived! :D I put them on at work and I feel like a duck... haha!
I've got a convention this weekend, but I'll try my best to attach the Zoomers this week and if I get time cut it over the weekend! :D
Hooray!
just some ideas, would adding a very small amount of macro pearl powder be enough to make it took translucent? as clean silicone will age over time. and what about the glitter nail polish would that work for your application?
I was planning on adding a tiny amount of colour to the fluke, yes :) I still want it to be green (and sparkly... lol), but very subtle in comparison to the scales! :)
I'm not sure how well glitter nail polish will work, as I'd think there would be chemicals in the polish which may inhibit the silicone? I couldn't be sure. But using plain loose glitter has worked very well for me on my old tail, so I will most likely follow the method I used last time :)
Just working out how the monofin will be shaped! :)

It's not very big, maybe the size of a Wave? But it will mean the fluke will be nice and flowy! :)
i also need to trim the wide bit of the Zoomers a little- lol! They make my feet too far apart. Haha!
Loose glitter is best! Not nail polish. In my experience, thin layers of silicone stay clear, pouring it thicker than a quarter inch will make it milky. If you add any mica powders like Pearl Ex, don't waste glitter by adding it at the same time. You can do a glittery slime coat on top for maximum shine!
Thanks Pearlie! :) Thats exactly what I did last time; the last layer was plain silicone with glitter through it! ^_^
Yes, Mizuko, you don't want your feet too far apart in the fluke. I had a similar problem with my homemade (by fusing two inexpensive swim fins together) monofin. I actually ended up welding them so that one foot was slightly in front of the other, though it didn't make too much of a difference while swimming.
Sorry for all the updates without photos! XD
I ordered one gallon order of silicone last Thursday (its been a week), as at the moment I cant afford the whole 2 gallon orders! lol! The reason I've done this is because I'm flying back to my hometown over Easter, and my scale mold is still there!! So I figured I'll get some silicone and pour the scale sheets while home, to avoid having to ship the molds back and forth! :P I'm getting a bit testy, because its been a week and the order hasn't arrived in the forwarding-services warehouse yet (located in California). I'm crossing my fingers it will arrive today or tomorrow, so they can send it out and it will be in Australia before the 16th!!
The lexan sheet has been dropped off at an acrylic-cutting store; we dont have the right tools to cut it ourselves at home, plus the professionals can give it a 'bullnose' edge (which is pretty much completely rounded!) to avoid cutting through the silicone! :D It should be ready to be picked up before monday! yay! :D
Got my fingers and toes crossed for you :) xx
Whoo! Keep it up!
