What sort of monofin does Finfolk use in their tails?
A FFP tail is $2500
*squeeee* I love it so much, I'm glad you guys do too!
And yes, their standard tails are $2,500 and come with a Finis Rapid monofin. I wanted a Competitor in mine, so they added that for an extra $170 so all up I paid $2,670. They may charge extra for the extra fins normally, but because I ordered this tail through their Kickstarter, they said they had all the funds built in for that so I got my extra fins as part of the normal cost of the tail. If you are curious about ordering one, you would have to message them on Facebook and ask (they're really good about getting back to you. When I originally sent them a message to ask about ordering a tail, they messaged me back like five minutes later). Also, I did pretty much custom design or help them design all this myself (I was especially particular about the scales and the side fins, which I wanted to look like those of an Asian arowana), but all the molds are going into their repetoire for their big Hawaii project, and then for their normal tailmaking business, so these scale and fin shapes will be available for all :) I would just hope that no one would copy my fin and color combinations exactly.
I will be posting a full review once I get it and am able to swim in it and get some pictures!!
Hi Theobromine! Congrats! I was just looking and drooling over the construction pix! What an awesome tail and fluke! How long from when you ordered, got all the details (sizing, colors, scale shape, fluke shape...) and then completed? I would have to rob a bank right now to get one (my horses board runs about $1800, that comes first!) I can't wait for you to swim in it and post some pictures! Do you know if FinFolks cut your monofin in a sort of shape or is it still flat! That fluke is huge! I love it, love, love it! Congratulations again!

Mermaid Marla
So I just went back through all my Facebook messages and it looks like I first contacted them to ask about ordering a tail on April 23. They shipped my tail yesterday, June 17. So that was less than three months but keep in mind that was with sculpting ALL new molds, including the scales. Which they sculpted individually, by hand, out of clay. Because I was that picky about the shape and the little details on the scales. That was the part that took the longest. Now that they have that scale sheet done it would go a lot faster. The second longest was probably my fluke sculpture. I kept sending them pictures and ideas throughout the process and they kept sending me progress pictures, which was awesome. Once all the molds were done it went really fast, probably only a couple of weeks. They worked really hard and did such an amazing job!
Anyway, I know they did have to cut the Competitor a little, but because it is such a nice expensive monofin I wanted to sacrifice as little of it as possible, so all they really did was round off the sharp edges (to keep it from tearing the silicone) and trim a notch in the middle to accommodate the middle part of the fluke shape. Mostly they just built onto it, so as to preserve as much of the surface area (and power) of the monofin as possible.
Finfolk should totally make the 'design your tail' templates with all their different flukes like Merbellas and the Mertailor do. As gorgeous as the pictures are, sometimes it's hard to see the exact fluke shape because it flows in the water. Not to mention I love coloring tail templates, lol. And it makes it easier to explain complex coloring schemes with a visual aid too. OMG! I just noticed how the two smaller hip fins are integrated into the scales! I am so impressed with this tailmaker.
Guys. Guys! GUYS!!! My tail is here!!! Take a look!

That was just a quick cell phone pic for now, but I will be taking a lot more pics and posting a full review later on!
Oh Theo it's beautiful and you look great in it!!
Thank you <3
Aaaaaahhhhhhh!!!! ^^;
That's really pretty and unique!
absolutely beautiful!!!
Stumbled upon this thread and just saw the picture of your tail! It is amazing! Love the color and the fluke design! You look great in it. Im so jealous!!!
Thanks guys! I will definitely do a review after I get some better pics and some video, just have to wait until I have a day off and a decent camera!
It's gorgeous. I really love the detail of the scales... I'm imagining the time it took to make that mold! Looks so worth every penny and every moment of waiting.
SO worth it. And they did an incredible job on the molds. I knew I wanted scales with a realistic shape and texture and they made the best scales I have seen on any tail ever. And they took my sketches and ideas for fin shapes and did an even better job than I imagined
So beautiful! Congratulations, I know you're thrilled!
Man, I can't wait to see this tail in person! And I'm bringing along my camera, so I'll be sure to take some photos!
Yay, Lorelei! I can't wait to swim with you! I...do have to practice putting it on a few more times, it's so tight it took me about an hour to struggle into. I think I have a better idea now of what it takes, though. You read all about other people's experiences, you think you know what you're getting into....then you try it yourself, haha. Well, they made it a bit extra tight for me because I told them I've been losing weight lately, and I was worried that if I keep losing weight it would end up too baggy. So this way it will accommodate a bit more weight loss (which I will hopefully accomplish!).
Yay I'm so excited for my next day off so I can try it out again!
Hahaha, I'm happy to help you get in if you need it. I've done it a couple of times now and I have a few tips. :3
Oh, haha, thanks. I think I have a slightly better idea of what to do now, but yeah, I might still need the help. Depends on whether my mertender decides to come with me or not.
absolutely gorgeous!!!
er-ma-gerrrd its beautiful! And you look gorgeous in it! I'm so jelllly! I cannot wait to get started on the molding process with my tail!
I'm going to try to get some more, better pictures of it soon. Took it for another swim today, this time at a bigger pool, and it was awesome and everyone was coming to look and ask me about it! We didn't bring a camera because we weren't sure about the photo policy at the Y but they said it was fine to do, so hopefully tomorrow we will do that! Then I'm gonna write up my full review.
That tail is amazing! I'm hoping to order from FinFolk once I get the funds saved up.
You should! I think they are just getting better and better! My attempts to get better pics of me in my tail keep getting foiled :( But hopefully today I will try again, as it's my day off.
More pictures please! <3
Hopefully by the end of today!
So pretty! And haha good luck getting into it :P Is it really that tight?
Ok, just got some more pics up! You can see them in my album here
And feel free to like my new mermaid page as well :D
Agh, that tail is so gorgeous in the new photos! I'm practically drooling over it! :jawdrop:
I loooooooooooove it :D :D :D It looks so incredible in the water, too. First experiment with our new GoPro, but my husband and I decided that we suck as cinematographers :P We're going to have to practice more before we can get decent videos but I'm hoping to maybe get some screencaps from the video clips we did get today. Just...the videos would make everyone seasick to watch :P
This is Amazingly gorgeous! How long did you wait for it? I read the horror stories of others waiting almost a year to get tails from elsewhere. That seems so unnecessary when these and the other guy's are so top of the line!
I waited just under three months from when I first contacted them to ask about ordering, to when it showed up at my door. And that was WITH all the completely custom sculpture work (they sculped all my fins, fluke, and each and every scale by hand). Now that they have the new scale mold done it takes them far less time; I've seen on their Facebook page that they look like they've already almost finished at least one new tail for another customer, all while working on their own tails for their big Hawaii project. Go like them on Facebook and follow their progress!
That's what I'm screaming! The ONLY reason it's become accepted to wait that long for a tail is because the most popular tailmakers are so flooded with work. It's like, come on, dude. Does it HAVE to be a merbellas? Is that really the ONLY studio on the planet that is capable of giving you a beautiful, high quality tail?
Nope! I think Merbellas makes beautiful tails and I wanted one for the longest time, but now I'm really glad I went with Finfolk instead. They were so awesome to work with and I had a completely custom tail just in time for summer! There are enough tailmakers out there that you don't have to settle for waiting six months, yeesh.
Finfolk is now my absolute favorite tailmaker... I can't believe how fast they whipped out that next tail after they finished yours! I am starting a tail fund yesterday, lol. And omg, the new pictures...
I am tired waiting after Fish Butts for a partial silicone tail that have been ordered back in October 1st 2012 and never heard about it again. Decided to put a deposit in end July for a Finfolk Production silicone mermaid tail and I'm penned for the last week of September. The tail will be ready by Halloween hopefully. I am trusting this company to deliver a beautiful and durable quality dream tail. I have the betta fluke in mind. Will write a review when time will be due! ;)
