Been thinking about making a mermaid staff to go with my walking around dress. I'd like to make it out of a tree branch, but I'm not sure how well the wood would handle being wet??
any ideas from y'all?
It wouldn't be in water a lot just sometimes for photos.
If you coated it in a lacquer it should be fine. Also, wood floats don't forget.

I'm hoping if it floats I won't loose it to the bottom since I can't go down very far due to my ears
Little silicone starfish clips I made. :)

They're solid silicone and not too heavy. :)
I love those plant leafs! They are so pretty, they remind me of a mossy waterfall!! :jawdrop:
^.^ i know, are they just fab, Ashton? I have to get more for the other clips I'm gonna put up on my shop.

I dont ever think I have ever seen that plant at any of the craft stores I frequent (mainly Joannes and Michaels)
I think she made them? dunno..
I have that same plant, I'm using it right now for a top. I got mine from Hobby Lobby
It is all wood, for the pole I used an old broken pool umbrella that twisted apart in the center.
Here are the progress shots of me making it:
First I drew out a pattern of what I wanted it to look like (not functional of course) Then I mirrored the image so that it would be the same on both sides.

Next I traced it onto some scrap wood I had and then cut it out.
Attachment 28356
I cut out the trident and sanded the edges so they had a bit of a curve. Then I glued shells and made some 'gem' like shapes also. (All will be covered in paint.
Attachment 28359
I sanded everything- even the pole because at the end I wanted it all to be gold.
Attachment 28357
At the top of the pole I cut a notch in it so that the trident head could easily rest on it.
Attachment 28358
I painted a base color on the trident head so that the metallic paint would stand out and not be darkened buy all the colors of the shells underneath.
And then I used heavy duty glue to glue the pole to the head.

I hope this helped :D
Thanks for posting that Ashton. That's really cool, and helpful.
Wes, what did you have in mind for your trident?
That's really cool Ashton!
Mal- I'm not sure. I might make one out of instamorph and PVC some time. I'll post a reference pic when I get to my computer.

I haven't really been finding much that catches my interest lately but I did find this gorgeous blue topaz & silver dolphin necklace and fell in love. I really wish the camera could have captured the blue better though. =\

Made a new one today. Haven't put the clip and accessories yet but the starfish itself looks pretty. :) http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15...1f4af90c02.jpg
Also have this one done, I just need to post it up on the shop for sale.

Coyote, do you sculpt your mother mould of a starfish or did you cast a real/fake starfish?
