PICTURES PICTURES PICTURES!! Yea :D
I've added many shell-shaped sequins to my tail by sewing them on; one by one. It was tedious work, but I was able to make sure that each sequin was securely fastened to the fabric. They made no difference in my ability to swim. They catch the light very nicely and are worth the time and effort to sew onto the tail.

ohh caymen islands! Please show pics of your tail! :)
^ That is incredible! How on earth do you have the patience?? LOL :)
^ Boy you get back fast! Are you already sitting there? :) The tail is looking great! May I ask how you did the fringe (I assume it's office matting but...)
Such a work of art! I have so much respect for mers that have the patience and fortitude to hand-sew sequins. Gosh, it is such a labor of love and it shows! Beautiful :)
looks amazing! i've just started this journey as well! got some neoprene, and sequins!! but by the looks of yours, i'm going to need a BILLION MORE! :P
quick question, I have 12 mm sequins, and they are much smaller than what I would want to use.. are you using 12 as well? they look small to me, but my perception could be off.
Ideally I would like to be using 20mm sequins, but I have searched everywhere and cannot find ANY sign of larger sequins.. but I know they're out there!!! GRRR..
otherwise, this tail is amazing and is going to be so wonderful!!! LOVING THE PICTURES! :)
You know, spandexworld in NYC has AMAZING selection of ALL KINDS of spandex already sequined... does that not appeal? It'd be a HELL of a lot less work to just buy the fabric and sew it together as opposed to doing it all by hand. Tho I understand that you may want something more specific. In which case, you may not have a choice.
As far as large sequins.. I know there are also plenty of trim shops in the fashion district that have huge selections of sequins... but I'm not sure they have an online web presence... check out:

as a start?
I have often wondered about beading a mermaid tail having seen some elaborate piece at the gallery where I work. Those sequins look great, man now I want a sequinned tail. lol

wow! you work is so inspiring :D i am also starting a sequined tail but i won't be covering the entire thing, kinduv like hannah mermaids signature blue tail. i am also going to be using the rubber floor matting for the back fins. super excited! I've already purchased the mono fin and 4mm neoprene.
