so it weighs about 70 pounds?
No. It weighs about 20-30 pounds (with scales). I bought 2 orders of 183.72 of dragonskin medium 10. One order = 2 gallons (part a +part b). For the first half of the fluke I used half of part A and half of part B (= 1 gallon). Same goes for the second half (2 gallons). I used 1/4 gallon of silicone of part A and part B for the first sheet of scales (1/2 gallon). And same for the second sheet (1 gallon for the scales). I used 3 gallons of silicone. I also used about 1/2 of silicone for tests and seaming and fixing. I also bought a trial size silicone just in case. The amount of silicone used is different for every tail. I ended up sculpting my clay on top of my monofin which used up more clay, and made my fluke mold much deeper. This lead me to the thought where I decided I had to fill the entire mold with silicone. Next time I will trace my monofin and symmetrical fluke pattern on a piece of wood or cardboard so I don't use up more clay, and so that I don't eventually use up tons of silicone. My fluke is super heavy but it's nice in light in the water so I'm not concerned.
My shell top! I'll probably add more cool accessories tonight. My goal is to seam everything by Wednesday, but I'll probably do it tomorrow.

are you happy with the medium 10's feel (hardness/softness)?
Yes it is very stretchy and soft and really gives a realistic effect. It also is very difficult to tear when then piece reaches a certain thickness.
about how thick would you estimate your scale sheet is?
You're doing an amazing job by the way!
1/2 cm I'd say.

It's a little messy lol
Post move pics of that please.!?!? Also how thick is the sheet?

Hey, Jazz this looks AMAZING. I look forward to checking your progress every week! I just had a couple questions. Do you think you could get away without using the ease release when using ultra cal and just use the Vaseline as a release agent? Also, in your opinion do you think that using the ultra cal on the fluke would be just as good as using the shell shock. Sorry for asking so many questions, shell shock just costs so much and if I can cut corners I will. :3 Lol
MermaidenMolly i may beable to answer from my experience. vasseline does work as a realease agent i used it on my clay piece then poured silicone over it and it came out just fine. in regards to ultra cal its a cement right? i don't think we can purchase this is Aus. You would need to place more vasseline in the mould before you pour your silicone in as it may stick to it. i read on the forum that someone used shell shock and it crumbled and fell to bits when it was demolded. im currenty trying out on a prototype flipper. expanding foam. will see how it turns out.. good luck.
I applied acrylic spray to seal the scales, then coated vaseline. and then sprayed Ease Release and waited 20-30 min for it to dry. You can also use other plasters and materials as well. Fiberglass resin may also work. You just have to test out different materials.
After working with my friend who does special effects masks I found that Pam cooking spray is the best release agent. It doesn't fill in details the way vasoline does so your mold is more detailed and also it comes off smoother and more cleanly.
Oh wow good to know! Thanks!
EEEEKKKK!

Great progress! How are you attaching your fluke? Or are you making it removable? I've been toying with designs for that.
Well at the end, there is a bunch of silicone scales scrunched up, so once its cured, I fold them out, and attach them to the fluke. A removable fluke sounds awesome! But I don't think I'm advanced enough for that.
Wow. Thats all I can say. I just got back from vacay and I log on and see this! Its amazing and you are moving so fast :O
Amazing progress! It looks great!
Well your doing awesome. This is your first tail making attempt right?
this is looking so awesome!!! :D
Oh no! Some how the final product ended up being huge and fit my MOM! I have no idea how! I wrapped it pretty tight! I took scissors and cut it down the middle in the back, and then wrapped it around and resized it to my measurements. I just finished glueing it again. I hope it comes out well.
Fins crossed
YES! IT CAME OUT PERFECT SIZE! XD XD It's gluing to the fin, I'll post picture tomorrow. !!
hi jazz!
i have a question for you. how can we glue the monofin in the dragonskin? im making a tail myself in silicone and ive heard and read that you have to glue the monofin in the silicone. can you help me? thanks!
It depends what monofin ur using. I'm using a finis foil which is made or rubber so it doesn't stick to the dragon skin. There is a thread in tail making questions with more detail then I can give. I'd suggest u check there.
AAAH JAZZ IM SO PUMPED TO SEE IT

I'm so proud of myself that I was actually able to pull through. I want to thank my best friend for giving an extra hand along the whole journey!
Well done!!! Go relax on your vacation, you've done a lot of work lately!
You are an amazing kid!!
Rock on sweetheart!
wow amazing! Congrats Jazz!!! it looks fin-tastic. It's still a bit see through, but I think you can thin some silicone down, mix it with the pigments and paint it on to be darker? Maybe ask some of the other tail makers or better yet call the silicone people! I wish I made tails so I could better put it into words. I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS WAS YOUR FIRST FULL ATTEMPT OF SILICONE. so freaking proud of you girl~~!~ <3
Thanks everyone! And yes Raina, it is see through but once I paint it that problem will be fixed.
well you aced that.
That. is. so. PERFECT. I'm in awe of you and your tail's greatness. Wow it's so perfect. YOU GO GIRL. Can't wait to see it painted!!
