Go for it! Making tails isn't nearly as hard as it may seem, just start with the basics :) Good luck ~
I second what Kalani said! Making your first tail is fairly easy, but once you make your second tail you will definitely have most of the construction down.
Today I started working on an animation I am doing for my motion graphics class. The animation is going to have a mermaid in it! :) It makes me feel better doing something mer related since I haven't been able to go swimming.
Here was my original concept art, but then my teacher told me that I should go with a simpler style to match the animation since I can't animate like a pro haha.

I just passed my first payment threshold for AdSense payments.

So I found out a couple of weeks ago that there's another mermaid on the island! :D :D I'M NOT ALONE!! Once I finished the initial freakout over it, I actually decided to message her on Facebook. You know, in that awkward way I tend to do... I'm kind of like a really excitable terrier that starts jumping around and losing its shit when it sees another dog. Anyway, I spent a day rockclimbing in a huge facility and orienteering in the woods. Because high school GYM classes have field trips now.
And then, on the bus ride back, I pulled out my tarot deck, and the boy next to me pulled out his and we compared. It was AWESOME.

Having SO much fun right now! My darling husband offered to clean out our Hoarders style garage in order to make space for my mermaiding projects a couple of weeks ago. All my supplies were in a few crates; I'd get them out, monopolize the dining room table then have to pack up whatever project every night.
Today he did it and he hung mermaid art all over the garage! I have a work space, and proper lighting, and storage!
My daughter: You have a woman cave!
Hubby: She has a Mermaid cave.
Daughter: A mermaid grotto!
And thus my space was named. :)
They're the best. Now I'm out in my mermaid grotto playing my pirate music and happily sorting and cataloging a zillion shells, sequins, sea glass, etc...having the best time!!
