Thanks Sia ! Thats awesome what uni are you studying at ? Ive applied to university of the Highlands and Islands in Oban! It sounds like the perfect course for me and in the 3rd year they have the option to study in Svalbard in the Arctic at UNIS ! Really hope I get in but counting on my personal statement and work experience as my SQA's are a little out of date ! If I don't ill try and get in next year after doing some access courses this year !
I'm studying at Edinburgh Napier University. It's a rather small uni but it does the job :) We have the option to exchange to a different uni for 6 months to a year in countries like America and Australia

I'm in second year. First year was just your basic biology, mostly learning the foundations but there's a course on evolution included and it's fantastic
Ah thats great - its been a long time since I was in school so I might have to do some refresher courses before I get accepted but hey it will be worth it in the end ! What sort of career are you looking at for when you finish ? x

Awesome Melanie, we have got to do a Scottish met meet up sometime this year. I'd love to meet more mers in person . And a Scottish tail maker would be amazing!

Quick word of warning it is really difficult (at least where i am) in Scotland to find a pool that will let you use a tail. The pool I was using for my monofin stopped letting me use that too in the new year. Beware extreme health and safety.

I should be making silicone tails by the end of the year, so maybe at some point we can do a colab ^_^

Selkie - I was thinking it might be difficult to find a place that will let me mermaid ! Im hoping that my qualifications as a dive/freediving instructor might help me along with being EFR trainer that might give them some reassurance - and I would make sure to have a buddy with me but fins crossed ! If you guys know of any pools that do allow it, Id love to know !
Lilium - thats awesome ! would love to see your work ! For sure would be fun to work on a project together ! :D Im hoping to ship home my molds that I made my first tail from but I think I will need to reinforce them with strong fiberglassing before I do or they might smash into pieces lol. Will be creating new fluke and scale molds when I get back so will hopefully have a selection for people to chose from and will also maybe consider custom fluke designs, but thats all a bit in the future yet !

I'm near Loch Lomond in Balloch. I hopefully won't be here most of the summer, I've signed up for camp America so I'm still waiting for that before I make any plans :)

Oh thats so close ! Ill be back at my folks for a while in Old Kilpatrick ( not far from Balloch at all ! ) Im back mid July for a book shoot in Lewis for a week then end of July ill be back at home so just let me know when you have time and we can do a mer-meet and greet and maybe I can get David to do some nice shots for us ! :D Also my mum is a make up artist/body painter, so we could have some fun doing mermaid inspired shoots ! :D

Oh I so agree ! My friends and I used to jump off the pier at Luss in the summer for swimming ! You can actually get some pretty amazing sunsets there too ! Its probably going to take me a while to get used to the temperature change haha ! its about 40degrees here at the moment and we are praying for some rain to freshen the air lol This is awesome, Im so excited that your so close by ! :D I was hoping to ask the Playdrome in Clydebank to let me swim there, have you tried them yet ? They have 3 pools - a large one for swimming laps, a wave pool and a baby pool. The large pool used to host the " Aqua Disco" where they had massive inflatable obstacle courses set up in the water ( long time ago now mind you haha ) oh those were the days :P
I didn't even think of the playdrome, I've been swimming in the vale of leven pool since Septemberish last year.

Ah thats good news ! Do they let you use your tail there ? Im hoping to organise some mermaid training sessions at Playdrome when I get back and possibly U/W shoots for models trying to upgrade their portfolio so really hope they let me use it ! If not, the Beardmore Hotel has a nice small pool that could be good for shoots, its been a long time since I was there mind you so would need to do a recon mission :p I know playdrome used to have scuba lessons in there and also saw people kayaking in there before lol

Can you share a rented lane with a buddy or is that per person do you think ? Maybe could cut the costs if we teamed up ?
I share it with my sister but she's losing interest so Im sure they wouldn't even think twice about letting you join in :)

Great stuff ! Well Id be happy to split costs of a lane with you ! How often do you go swimming ? David will be doing some training courses when we get back to get back into working offshore but I'm sure I could squeeze him for a few shoots before he gets back into the swing of things :P Im looking online for beautiful spots around Scotland that would be great for mermaid shoots in an attempt to make me feel better about leaving tropical Phuket and Im actually really excited ! I might make a thread for Scottish spots for mermaid shoots ! :D
At the moment I'm swimming every tuesday at 1:00 but I really want to go more :) Silver sands in Morar is the most beautiful beach I've ever found in Scotland the fairy pools in Skye are a definite must for pictures I'll be going there quite soon actually when I collect my silicone tail from Florida. I'm kind of stalking you on facebook now lol I love your tail it's really pretty :)

( mind you after that competition I did Ive not had much chance to be a mermaid ! ) I have 2 wedding gigs next month so hopefully will get some nice shots/footage from them ! Going to miss these jobs when I come home, but got to keep on swimming :P

well there's the folkstone mermaid festival happening in august from what we can tell and there was one planned for london in may but it looks like that one has fallen through.
I've been aiming to plan a meet in Blackpool in september which might be easier for scottish mers to get to =) there's trains from glasgow and edinburgh that run straight to Preston and then there's a 20 min connection from Preston to blackpool.
Hopefully in the next month or two i'll be able to start getting some solid details together for people but we were thinking of a day on the pleasure beach theme park, a photo op on the beach and then renting a heated pool for the evening that we could all swim in. And then maybe a trip to the sea life center and the tower in the morning before people have to travel home? as I figured most people will need to stay in blackpool overnight. I'm going to see if I can get a good price on hotel rooms for people too, Though depending on if my family has managed to get a new house or not (currently renting), then a bunch of people could come crash at my house and save on the hotel costs =)
Though I will add for the sake of southern mers that I met up with Vixy the other day and we were talking about once i've gotten at least one event in blackpool under my belt, that I might organise something in cornwall with her help. When I have the chance and the money I'll be going down there to visit and check out possible locations for it =)
Depending on what my funds are like, it's something I would definitely be interested in doing
