I apologize if this was already answered, but the mold the tail is curing in, what is it made of? Was it just a latex or something that turned rock hard after it cured?
This looks fantastic btw. ;)

Thank you. :3
The material I used is actually a type of plastic/urethane material that sets up hard as a rock. It's called Shell Shock Liquid Plastic.
Thanks! :) Really appreciate it!
way to go! You're amazing! I can't wait to see the finished result!!
I am planning on making my first tail, which will also be silicone, as soon as I can manage to get enough materials for it to get started. Reading through all of this has really helped me get an idea of the process, since I have never done anything like this before. Your tail is looking absolutely fantastic!!! I can't wait to see more of your progress!! I really hope mine turns out as well as yours is turning out!! ^__^
Beautiful!
Hey Mermaid Lorelei, you & I have talked a bit about silicone tails. I'm at this point now. I'm nearly done with the big seam on the large scale sheet & did "glueing" of the fluke halves today. Ugh, the seams are the hardest part! After this is seaming the fluke to the bodice (scale sheet)! @.@ Must per.. sev.. ere..
The monofin looks awesome Lorelei! I'm new the forum, but I just started the monofin sculpting for my first tail (which will be in latex)... Hope it turns out as beautiful as yours did :D

Wow!! Now I'm wishing I had taken a day off so I could go to the festival and see that!!
Wow, that is impressive. Looks amazing.
The fluuuuuke <3
It is simply amazing! Please tell me how much you needed to silicone? Sorry for my english ((:(
It's gorgeous!
I wonder whether you would consider becoming a tailmaker (well, selling them :D )
I'll be back there in tail the first weekend in June. -hinthint- ;DQuote:

Don't worry about it. :3 I'm not actually sure how much silicone my tail needed because I was using the same silicone to make other things at the same time. If I had to guess, I'd say I used about 1 1/2 orders of the gallon size dragonskin silicone.Quote:

I'm very tempted to make and sell tails as a tailmaker, but I have a LOT of testing to do before I'll be confident in sending out a tail.Quote:

And a BIG thank you to everyone for your support and kind words!
Lorelei, will you be there both days? I will have to see if I can take another day off...it's the curse of always working weekends. I'm already taking a week off right now to road trip to go see a friend so I will see how it goes. It would be really cool to meet another mer in person!
I will be there both days. :3
I will let you know if I can make it!
Oh wow! How exactly did you manage to make the foot covering? I'm still confused as to how to make a silicone fluke. No videos on youtube that I find seem to help...
The site Smooth-on says that one gallon is 16 Lbs.! Wow! or am I confusing you?) Just here in Russia is measured in kilograms!) is a 16 kilogram of silicon)You have inspired me), I have long wanted to create one tail) When I saw your tail I wanted to do)
Alas, I won't be able to take that weekend off to come see you at the faire, as I have to go turtle trapping for work. Maybe we could meet up and go swimming sometime though?
The fluke is actually probably the most perfect shape ever! :)
you're so awesome :D
I just read this entire thread, and I have shed tears of awe, dropped my jaw, and done a happy dance for you. THIS IS AMAZING! KEEP IT UP!
The design changed a bit along the way, didn't it?
Awww, darling you are going to make me cry! Thank you so much for the incredibly kind words! -hugs- <3Quote:

Haha, yeah, just a bit. Honestly, it's still changing, too. I'm about to add some side fins and change up the colors. I'll be posting the official 'finished' tail and a photoshoot this summer. :3Quote:

Oh darn. That's alright. I would love to meet up with you some time! There are a couple of other mermaids in Tulsa and Muskogee as well. Perhaps we could even set up a swim meet?Quote:

Raina, you're so sweet to me. <3Quote:
you're so awesome :D
Thank you! I tried very hard to make it something I wanted, something other people would like, and something that looked natural. I'm glad to see I succeeded!Quote:

Swim meet would be awesome!! I have a decent fabric tail right now but I'm getting a silicone one pretty soon. I'd love to meet and swim with some other mers!
So, I went swimming in my tail this morning. Before I even got in the water the seam at my waist split. -cries- I know why it did, and it's not too difficult to fix, but still. It was my first swim and I couldn't do much more than flop down the lane. At least no one was filming.
Oh no! D:
I'm glad you can fix it, but man that must feel like a disaster.
Wowwww, the teaser image of you in your tail is SO EXCITING!!! Your dedication and commitment to detail has paid off. Wow!!!
I'm really curious what brand of pigment you used?
I have ordered my Dragonskin, and want to make sure I get a brand that is compatible with platinum silicone. I thought I might get lucky and find some at the local arts store (Jacquard brand pigments maybe?) instead of ordering the Silc Pig pigments from Smooth On, but I am worried the Jacquard or more any old paint pigment "just won't do" or have some hidden property in them that will cause curing problems.
Thank you!!! <3
Lorelei!!!! You finally did it! I'm SO HAPPY for you! JOB WELL DONE!! Can't wait to see you swimming in it!
T uhh cuxfjxjf aghh
It looks amazing! I'm excited to see the end result!!!
Awww, you guys are awesome! I'm having a feely overload moment. XD
