All we have to do is watch!
Ok, broke down and started watching it. My thoughts? This is a totally different show from H2O - I think they could have gotten away with dropping the associations in the name, and using a different island, and the show wouldn't have suffered. As far as I understand it, given huge continuity errors (the moon pool was destroyed, guys ;) And you should have heard how many times I said, "...WHAT?!"), this appears to be an alternate universe deal adding more mermaid stuff to a TV show centered even more around mermaids. Kind of like a do-over. Schiff started with Ocean Girl (human girl who lives in the ocean), H2O (girls who turn into mermaids mysteriously), and Mako Mermaids (mermaid clans who guard against the possibility of humans becoming mermaids). It seems if Schiff had his way, this would be 100% about mermaids in the ocean :)
The tone is a bit different (less humor, not sure if I like it) due to being a Netflix original (Netflix is famously very permissive and generous to show creators, I'm sure Schiff was less bogged down by what the network wanted). I wonder how H2O would've been different had it been a Netflix show. And there seem to be several caveats to becoming a mermaid, mermaids getting legs, etc. Apparently mermaids born by natural mermaids need moonlight to get legs. So they're different than moon pool mermaids. Which the girls don't initially seem to know much about. Good god I hope they explain that.
...OKAY. IT'S CUTE. I ADMIT IT. >.<
it gives me lots of ideas for H2O fanfic too :)
I saw 13 episodes on Netflix last night. When does it start up again and where will it be viewed?
Okay, I'm really nerdy when it comes to my shows but guys. The merpool was not destroy it was saved along by the earth but our last cast of mermaids. Heroes if I do say myself. woot, woot. Also I think the show would have suffered severely if they used a new place, and a new island. Mako Island, is the hook to the show, and people want to be comfterble watching knowing their old show or favorite show isn't just getting ruined because a lot of people feel like that. some people may feel like that about the new spin-off but I like it. I wouldn't call it a do over because that would mean replacing the old cast, and everything and just doing it over by replacing it but I know what you mean. just doing it over with a different shot and point of view but I just wouldn't call it that. We all know its an alternate universe but no ones knows as of yet. TT-TT I would really, really like just some tiny things to cross over, but the series hasn't clearly ignore any of the other stuff then before, but I don't think it would be crossing over because a cross over and a spin off are really different. Sometimes their both the same thing but yeah. I like how the writers, showed how the mermaids left when Zach fell in. So, no ones heard of a merman falling in, but they never mentioned anything about mermaids. Pods, can leave, and Rita had gotten kicked out from her pod. Her pod left her too, because she fell in love with a human, SO WHAT I AM HOPING FOR IS that during that time Rita's pod left the merpool unattended. I think both types of mermaids can exist in one world, they just have yet to find each other. xP On another thought, maybe it will forever be separated by the writers OTL.....Schiff wanted to go in a new direction, but he wanted to use something he loved, and everyone loved with was h2O, but he wanted to do it his way, and make how he envision it. He liked, and loved his old series, but he wanted to go in a great big new direction like all writers do. Schiff knows that it would be hard to put real actors under water all the time, so he obviously wasn't planning that and knowing his past works he wanted them to go on land. It's kinda funny how we were learning about girls who were learning about the ocean, and being mermaids while now we are watching girls who are learning about being human, and being on land. Also more stuff about mermaids that we couldn't learn back in h2O Just Add Water. I thnk he knew if he put mermaids on land, we could learn more about the mystery of Mako, and the like... awesomeness of mermaids that we didn't know in h2o, because they were turned like Zach, and were female. Also in the last series, it was obvious they were teasing us with mermen and the merpool.... all the time!!!! so now, we know why... the merpool wanted Zach to fall in and get the triton, wee just don't know why. Mako does, what Mako wants. No questions asked. I know the humor isn't the same but they are going in a different direction with their humor. They are girls who are mermaids and are "stupid" so they are learning things on land that's what makes it funny. Sometimes the jokes are hard to get, like the facebook joke. Why would I writhe that one a wall?" I really liked that one. xD So, you see. They made the show online, and they wanted the ability and the rights to do their own thing. So they wouldn't have to be attach to a network or company. So what they did, was start filming and then I think they sent the oppertunity and lets say a few episodes to Netflix, Netflix reviews the show. Then they slap their name on it to make them look good and make money. I really like the ice mermaid idea, and hope to sea it in the future. I think it will be really cool. :)
I'm dying to watch it, but I have to wait for Bubbles to watch it with me lol. We said we wouldn't watch it without each other :P
The geologist and the red headed sister strip mined the Moon Pool. *Wikis the Moon Pool* As far as I know, the last cast didn't miraculously repair it when they deflected the comet. And I wasn't arguing about Netflix, I was also saying Netflix is a good thing for producers. There are stories of netflix giving show creators a wad of money and pretty much saying, "Have fun!" I can see good and bad things that came of not having a network telling them what they could do. The writing could be tighter, and it's dotted with weird plot holes that exist for the sole purpose of keeping episodes 20 minutes long, but they're definitely doing things that they couldn't do before. I for one am glad this is AU and they aren't mucking with the old cast or story line! When I say do over, I mean it looks like they took many of the old concepts and ideas, took a familiar location, and did their own thing with it without the weight of a network telling them what to do.
i don't think most of the mers were turned like Zac, otherwise they wouldn't have needed the moon ring to change into humans. They'd have just dried off. And they don't seem to know how moon pool mermaids work. That leads me to believe that they use the famous siren songs to lure hapless sailors to breed more mermaids (why else would they need seduction songs?? XD ), moon pool mermaids are a huge aberration that shouldn't even happen in mer culture, and humans need moonlight to become mer and vice versa.
Yes, I am a nerd about my shows. I can proudly out nerd most people here XD
The sisters name was Sophie.
so does it come on netflix in September or cable?
Right. I hated what's-her-face ;) XD
so who thinks Zach will get the trident and become evil next season? I hope he does get it so he can come into his powers. I think the rest of the pod will come back and reunite when he comes into power.
*raises hand* *wicked cackle*
I want to see more of Aquata! I loved how decorated her hair was
Do you think Zach will stay with his girlfriend or team up with one of the mergirls?
I think they'll break up. At least for awhile.
I love the way they incorporate a lot of the ocean and sea into their hair throughout the season. I especially love Sirena's hair and I notice they braid their hair most of the time. Season 1 isn't finished just yet. Sometimes tv shows do that where they show half of the season, wait a few months then show the rest of it. It's still season 1, just the first half. I do hope though that some type of explanation is given as to how mermaids are created or perhaps the moon pool, but then again since its not a sequel, I guess in this universe the original H2O mermaids never happened. I have to say Nixie is my favorite, I absolutely love how awkward and weird she is. Also, since mermen are supposedly gone how are the mermaids still procreating? I really want to know what the mermen did to have such a terrifying reputation. They vaguely explained it in the series.
I second that they "never happened," this is just Schiff running free here with old ideas :) I have a theory that mermaids use their famous siren songs to lure sailors to procreate with (not marry! just procreate with then drowning them, since that's actually part of mermaid lore, and Australia doesn't really shy away from the idea of hinting at sex, you know, existing). The franchise has hinted that old books on mermaid lore are fairly "accurate" with how mermaids work. Moon pool mermaids aren't supposed to happen, it doesn't seem, so I doubt the moon pool is how they're making more. If mermaidism is a dominant gene, then well that works!
I love Nixie too, but I think my favorite is Sirena! She's totally me. Also, invisibility magic is badass!
Sirena does have really pretty hair. That really does inspire me to make some bead/shell bracelets and sea hair ornaments to wear in my normal day to day non mer activities
I am thinking this may be a prequel to H2O. Not to far before it, maybe a couple years.
If a quake happened near Mako, it could have opened a land entrance, i.e. how Emma, Cleo, and Rikki found the moon pool.
Perhaps Zac opened a land entrance with the trident. We know he ends up with the trident later in the series.
Also, how cool would it be to have a grotto with a moon pool in your house that exits to your pool outside?
I wish so, omg. It would be the neatest thing to have something like that!
"Why would I writhe that one a wall?" I really liked that one. xD"
omg...I totally missed that joke myself. xD
I watched the whole first season in one day and it was amazing to see that there are more mermaids and there is a merman and all this back story is amazing! I give them 5 stars!
I have to say that i'm in love with this show. everytime i watch it i always laugh. ep 2 getting legs how funny was that ep trying to walk. lyla, this is never going to work. (walking sidways like a crab) I had tears coming out of my eyes from so much laughing. anyways i like the stroy line so far as it more about mermiads from sea that dever to land instead of land to sea. the characters are good my favourite would have to be nixie, however i love seriena's singing voice they are all good in their own way. Now you have this little love connection between zack and lyla, well it an't there yet but it will be and I think everthing will change. I feel that rita know alot more than she's letting on, who agrees? it will be interesting to see how the trident changes his personality. i had a dream that the trident will change zacks personality as the power of the trident corrupts him, but i may be way off here. overall its great 10/10 for me. oh I love the into song too.
guys. have you noticed the tails are made differently? the colouring is different and that there is a faint black line up the middle. also the fluke is alot thinner so it gives a more realistic flick in the water.
I refused to sleep until I finished it, I like the idea of it being a prequel. And I'm given it over to the fact that he's a merman, that he has all the powers (like charlotte) but hasn't gone mad (like charlotte). Where as Cleo, Emma, and Ricky only had one of each.
I envy this tread xD Like really! U guys don',t know how much i'll be able to watch the show! We don't have Netfix :'( Are there any leaks on youtube?
Was I the only one that noticed on the last episode of the 3rd season of H2O when they're calling out the graduates names, you hear 'Lucy Fry' the same girl who plays Lila on Mako mermaids...Coincidence? I think not!!
lol I love the show but I think its only released on netflix. I love h2o and i'm a mega pokemon fan but haters gonna hate.
Got to protect your star player.
nope just had to rewatch the ep. here is a pic of lucy fry. do you think its the same actress or someone different. hard to tell in photo.

It's the same and it's been confirmed multiple times.
I just thought it was a funny coincidence :)
Can't wait for the second half of season one to be released! Only 8 more days to go!
The episode titles are listed for the second half. Rewatching ep. 13 anxiously waiting :P
