resin safety? two questions:

I'm about to purchase resin for my mold, and I just wanted to ask someone with experience, how bad are the fumes? Are they bad enough that I have to pour my molds outside? I'm only making small molds for individual scales and little fins right now, no more than a square foot at the most. Could I get away with doing it in a basement or in the garage? And if I have to do it in the garage, how badly will cold temperatures inhibit the curing?

Or maybe I should rephrase the question: should I swallow the extra cost and get the fume-free but expensive stuff Pearlie uses (CR-300) or will the cheaper brand (Bondo, I think?) from Lowes be safe to work with indoors, in small quantities? Is Shell Shock just as stinky/dangerous?

I know I sound paranoid, but I got quite a safety lecture from the gal in the art supply store (OMG USE A RESPIRATOR!) and, well, now I'm paranoid. I've read through a bunch of threads (and MSDSs that scared me) and haven't found the answer to this one-- sorry if it's a repeat. :$ Thanks!

Just don't do it in a place where you sleep or people like to relax in. The smell is fairly stinky, even the ones that claim there is no smell.

Use in well ventilated area, like open your windows, doors, in garage, patio, outside in the garden etc.

And always wear safety equipment like gloves n goggles.

With bondo brand fiberglass resin it can be molded indoors in a very well vented area. As soon as it hardens (which doesnt take very long) it can be put outside to off gas. The offgasing is what makes the smell linger for days. When hardened ice and snow or any weather wont bother it. Dont do it in your house unless no one will be there for hours after and you dont have pets.

You MUST wear full coverage clothes and goggles. The fumes can burn the skin around your eyes. I just used a simple face mask to keep the fiberglass matt out of my lungs.

Cooler temps keep the resin from solidifying as fast so you would have more work time in a garage or basement. Bondo brand will set in temps down to 10 Celsius. It just takes longer. I recommend the cloth and not the matt tho. Matt is messy and can leave nasty pokies. The cloth is softer, easier to cut and shape and doesnt need as much resin to fill it.

I used bondo resin for all my molds. They are thin and lightweight and I can store them behind my office dresser :) for tiny molds you wouldnt even need the cloth. Thicker the layer of resin the faster it will set. It creates heat as it sets so make sure whatever your mold is sculpted with isnt heat sensitive or itll melt. Monster makers and bondo dont mix. The bondo gap filler putty also works and doesnt affect silicone cure. It doesnt smell much and is very thick. I have the uv activated stuff and it worked really well for my small stuff. It doesnt have that smell to it and doesnt need as much time to off gas.

I've only had experience with Shell Shock and I'd honestly suggest you go with something else. Shell Shock is very heavy and rather brittle. I made my scale and fluke molds out of it and they have no flexibility whatsoever. The fluke even broke in one place. But that's just my suggestion.
