Raider's Fabric Tail Modification
Ok so I've been working a lot lately at modifying my black tail from Grow a Tail. I've no complaints about the seller, and actually highly recommend them. Their customer service is great, fast turn-around, and their custom mono fins are made from old rubber flippers that are surprisingly durable and well-formed.
The tail skin is pretty standard. Single color of fabric, with a hole at the base of the mono fin for easier removal and water flow. The biggest downside I've seen with it is the drag it creates at the waist of the tail, so I'm going to be working on an mid 'belt' like segment that can be worn with / without the tail, that will also feature a dorsal fin (so that way you don't always have to have the dorsal on).
I'm especially fond of the way that fabric tails fit. I probably won't ever work with silicone or latex just because its a bit too unwieldy for me.
So here are the things I want to accomplish with this tail:
- Make pectoral fins
- Make a dorsal fin
- Make a tighter belt (with dorsal attached)
- Paint the caudal fin to have some detail
- Add some sheer fabric to the caudal to give it more flow
Here are some color sample of the fabric I have: The base tail is a reflective black 'shattered glass', accessory is a black microdot spandex, and the sheer fabric is a surprisingly durable black crinkle.

Here's a picture of the mono fin. (wrinkled because of being stored in a box no doubt. Doesn't effect the way it fits though)
