First gig jitters- a guide to your first mermaid party gig!

Hello everyone! I just recently had my first birthday party gig! Sortof! It was my best friend's little sister's party, I knew all the kids. and I wasn't paid but still. I was soooo nervous going in. I'm used to answering questions at the beach or pool but gigs are different!

There's a lot of general advice out there, but since I'm a nervous nelly, nothing was helping me. I thought I would start this thread to become a sort of guide to helping the budding professional mer to feel at ease at their first gig.


I've found that you just shouldn't panic. I ended up winging it at my gig and everything went ok. I wish I had made myself a script of sorts to get me started, but I just put the tail on in the other room with my friend and then sat on the couch lol not super magical but the kids got to be surprised at the mermaid watching tv with their parents.

So my Mom gave me the idea that I could visit the local Ronald McDonald house kids as a mermaid. We would get my boyfriend to wheel me around in a wheelchair. My Mom emailed them and they thought it sounded like a fun idea and to tell them when we can do it.

I really want to make kids happy and I know that in turn will make me feel really happy, but I am super super nervous. I don't know why I am. I mean I went swimming at a nearby spring when it was packed and I had kids coming up and asking me questions and wanting to touch my tail and I was fine in that situation. I guess I feel more pressure because this isn't just me going to swim somewhere and pausing at the dock a few times to greet kids who want to see me, this is me not swimming just sitting in my tail with kids.

I feel like I can make some pretty good answers up when they ask questions, but what about when they are not asking questions? Also, I have no idea how long I should stay...

I never posted that thing oops.well here's what I have up my sleeve for awkward silences and shy kids. You can ask them questions! "Are you a human? Wow! How many fingers do you have on your feet? What are toes? What do humans eat? Wow I love your foot clothes! Shoes? How neat! And your leg clothes too! How cool!" Kids eat it up. And it prompts them to ask questions (and that's the easy part) you could memorize some ocean fun facts for quiet moments, pass around shells for a show and tell, tell them about ocean conservation, give them little mermaid treasures to keep (vase fillers). I've told kids I'm looking for a friend of mine who is a pirate or a merman or even a fairy (they don't actually exist) and that usually sends them running around looking for this mythical friend and gets them off your back for a little. Play ocean animal charades, teach them to make dolphin noises to annoy all the adults once you're gone etc.
ask them if they've ever seen a mermaid before, it's pretty cute sometimes they just lie and it's adorable. "Yes she had a rainbow tail and it changed colors and she could do magic" lol ok lil cutie.
