Painted fabric tail!

I know I started a thread probably six months ago, but I can't find it anymore, which might be a good thing because all of my ideas have changed since then. I sewed together my white spandex, and put a waistband in, and I also put the tiny snaps on the bottom so I can take my monofin in and out ( I currently don't have a monofin, my lexan ones keep breaking at different points, so I'm asking for a professional one for Christmas.) I started painting this in probably late June, post-op because I was so bored sitting at home. And once September rolled around I was busy beyond belief, between school, dance team with the school, taking dance classes at my own studio, and starting to teach at a different studio, I have only one day a week where I'm not dancing! Back to the point, winter break started for the studio I teach at has just started, and winter break for my studio will start after Wednesday this week, so I'm really going to try and pump the whole thing out before everything starts back up (here's to hoping...) Wow, the paint looks really nice. I never though I would say this but I'm starting to consider a pink tail once I can afford one. XD

I'll always love pink tails, I think it's just because it goes nice with every skin tone! I put gold 3d paint around the edges, and it's hard to tell in the picture but there's SO much glitter!

What kind of paint did you use? Curious!

I used four different kinds of the Tulip fabric paints! The 3D, the 'Slick', and the glow in the dark!

Well my break just started, which means the painting for hours is starting! I'll be posting updates as they dry, so usually in the mornings. I've also started rewatching the X Files on netflix as I'm painting, so I won't be having friends for a while :thumbs-up:

I only worked on it for less than two hours today, but I got really far! It's just above my knees now, I can totally kick this out in two weeks! P.S. I got glow in the dark fabric paint, but I need ideas on where I'd put it :thinks:

That looks awesome! My suggestion for the glow in the dark paint would be the lines between the scales.

Hydra that would be super cool, and it'd give it the 3D feel! I love it and I'm going to do it!

Will you put some sort of sealant over the paint once it's finished?
The paint on my tails wears out so fast it's almost not worth the time put in painting :(
But then I use it a lot in chlorine.

I didn't know I needed to, it's fabric paint so I just figured, wait 72 hours and wash. Do you know of any sealant that's clear?

I got more done today! It's actually past my knees, but it got all bunched up because I had to walk over to get this picture taken :cool:
I'm really excited to get to the fluke part, right now it's just boring because it's the same thing over & over & over, but I think I'll do the backside before the fluke so I don't get all lame and quit before I start the back.

I think I'm going to just do the same pattern on the back, but without the white, so it just gets to super light pink in the middle. I'm thinking about adding some fins in the back, so it depends on which fins I want :thinks:

If you do a sheer fabric, remember to test the hell out of it first. Get a scrap and soak it and pull at fibers. Some sheer fabric will fray really easily.

I have the fabric stretched out over this board my dad had used over summer while he screen printed some stuff, so once it's dry I let it un stretch sorta, it doesn't go completely back to normal (which is fine because my winter bod is here) [emoji23]

Gotcha. Cool. I just want to know, because I used watered down acrylic for a tail, once. Destroyed the stretch, but due to lack of a dummy, I wore it while I painted the underbelly, and stuffed it with t-shirts while painting the back. So it fit.

Still, curious for next time. I broke down and bought a finfun to modify, because I don't have a sewing machine, and hand sewing a tail once was ENOUGH, and now it's starting to wear.

ANYWAYS, I want to see about painting in patterns for the sake of realism. Which is moot, given that I went with magenta, but still.
