Good First Partial/Full Silicone Tail or Harder Material Tail?

Hello all! :D

I'm relatively new here, but before I had an account I was quite the lurker.

I was wondering if you guys had any advice on what a good first more solid tail would be? I apologize, I'm not completely versed on the different types of tails yet in terms of the harder materials (meaning not fabrics). I know of full silicone and partial silicone, but while I have heard of neoprene and neoprin I'm not entirely sure where those fall...

I have a FinFun Rio Red tail and their monofin, and I love it to death! It's so cute and easy to use. However, I'm slowly building a mer-business and have already done my first gig. While my tail is cute, it sometimes really breaks the illusion of being a "real mermaid" for the little ones because of the fabric clinging to my legs and what not and the fact the scales are printed and not something physical they can touch.

Since I'm a Freshman in college, I don't have a whole lot of money I can drop, so as much as I'd love to get the FinFolk tail of my dreams, it's just not gonna happen yet ^^'

Have you thought about a sequin neoprene tail or even a sequin neoprene tail with a silicone fluke and silicone fins? Hannah Mermaid and Mermaid Kariel are both very successful mermaids who have sequin tails. Kariel just recently started making silicone tails and I am guessing she will eventually be wearing a full silicone tail, but she has done tons of kids entertainment in her sequin tails.

Sequins have that shine to them making them look very fish-like and of course they would feel more real than fabric.

Of course this all depends on if you want to buy a tail or if you are okay with making your own. Kariel might be the only one at the moment selling sequin tails, and they can be expensive. Doing it yourself is cheaper if you are willing to put in the hours.

The partial silicone is definitely another option like you said. There are some good partial silicone topics in the tailmaking area of this forum where people have used safe food grade or aquarium grade silicone to make tails. They put this silicone over neoprene fabric.

I would stay away from neoprin though as neoprene is the tough stuff and it is used to make wet suits and neoprin is a weaker fabric.

Oh almost forgot: You may also be able to get a used silicone tail which would of course be cheaper than a brand new tail. Often the classifieds section of the forum will have a used silicone tail for sale. The used tails are not always heavily used either. Sometimes they have only been used a handful of times and the owner has to pay for a wedding, gained weight, or quit mermaiding and then they sell the tail. So that is another option. :)

Aquatails now also have their sequin tails back, as well as a few options for neoprene, but I don't know if they're doing scales just yet. I'd go for a Mythic tail by Finfolk. The few reviews I've seen seem like they're a good quality for the price, and they have individual scales! That's definitely what I'm going for when I'm less broke!

Looking at her avatar I would say she went with the Mythic tail. ;)
