Mermaid and Mermen competition for the enviroment

My name is Adolfo Maciocco, a professional underwater photographer from Italy.
I've been taking photos of models underwater for a while in pools, but recently had a project with professional free divers in Thailand, and it was great fun...and amazing results. http://www.adolfomaciocco.com/Galler...rwater-Fashion
I want to do a project with Mermaids and Mermen underwater with an environmental theme and finally I've found the right team to do it with.
We are about to present a project to the authorities of a small town by the sea, which has really the perfect logistics to organize an underwater event. The town has also recently installed an underwater Mermaid statue that rise up to the surface to sing ... and it has an underwater museum as well, which is between 5 mt to 11 mt of depth.
I've been searching around the web for a while to find similar events, the only one I've found so far is organized in Germany. My idea is to do something different, not only focused on the beauty part..
I was always fascinated by Mermaids and Mermen, and I strongly believe they have the potential to send a very positive message to the general public about the relationship between humans and the sea.
The finalist of the contest will not just get a prize but will also have the opportunity to partecipate to an artistic photographic project and a documentary about the pollution in the sea.
I am writing a thread on this forum to get some feedbacks and ideas and advices for the event and to see if there is anyone who would be interested to participate.

The judges will take in consideration facial expression underwater, underwater swimming and tricks, underwater posing and personality.
We are very open to ideas on this . What do you think are the main skills mermaids and mermen should have?

First off; it's great to see something like this in Europe!
As you noticed, Europe -in comparison to the States, which have conventions- is woefully lacking in larger organized events.
If you aim to raise environmental awareness instead of going for a beauty pageant with a tail twist, the better!

Main skills mer performers should have:

looking and moving effortlessly and naturally underwater; good diving and swimming skills; care about the oceans and waters and its inhabitants (not so much a skill, but something I consider important, because without it, you are just someone wearing a costume).

I'm too far away to participate, but there are Italian mers (and I'm surprised why there are not many more, seeing as Italy is pretty much ideal for mermaiding with its coastline and climate).

To be honest, I'm also not much into the competition part because I think the more mers, the merrier, and working together toward a goal is always better than trying to outshine everyone, but if you can get new people interested in the topic with a competition of this sort, go for it.

I like a lot the idea of something happen in Europe... As i'm in France... Only something personnal is that i don't like competition too... Only swim there, making photo shooting and entertain public will be my goal... Italy could be a good place as mediterraneen sea is warm... So a pleasure to swim in during summer...

Yes in Italy there's an apparently lack of mermaids and Mermen but there are a few mermaid Isabel is one of my mermaid friend and we live quite near each other!





As the others I'm of the same opinion that for environment collaboration is better than competition


Anyway I'm willing to know more about what you do and this event, your work is just stunning!



For the abilities a mermaid should have in my opinion are: a strong swimmer and diver with a good heart meaning that she should be first a lover of the earth and in particularly the ocean.

That's just my opinion though
