Mermaid Movies, Books, and TV Series Recommended For Vegetarian/Vegan Merfolk

    1. The Little Mermaid(1989)-KL's Score 10/10. Ariel is friends with different types of sea creatures(except sharks), and King Triton views humans as barbarians for eating fish
    2. Hans Christian Anderson's The Little Mermaid(1975)-KL's Score 9/10. Marina's best friend is a dolphin and merfolk are not shown eating fish
    3. Magic Island(1995)-KL's Score 8/10. Lily, the mermaid, is friendly with animals and even plants!
    4. Aquamarine(2006)-KL's Score 8/10. Aqua mentions starfish speaking to her and is not shown eating fish, as far as I remember
    5. Splash Too(1988)-KL's Score 8/10. Unlike the original Splash, Madison is not shown eating seafood, as far as I can remember. She also is clearly shown to be able to communicate with sea creatures. Has a good message about dolphins in captivity

    Books:

    1. The Sea Fairies by L. Frank Baum-KL's Score 10/10. Although the mermaids do eat certain types of seafood, they are shown to be friendly with some sea creatures
    2. Of Land And Sea by Lisa Dawn-KL's Score 10/10. There are occasional references to mermaids' "friends in the sea"
    3. Lost Voices Trilogy by Sarah Porter-KL's Score 9/10. The mermaids eat small mollusks such as mussels but not fish or marine mammals
    4. Midnight Pearls by Debbie Viguie-KL's Score 9/10. The merfolk are implied to be vegetarians
    5. Mermaid SOS Series by Gillian Shields-KL's Score 8/10. The mermaids can speak to all sea creatures and are not shown eating seafood
    6. Whatever After: Sink or Swim by Sarah Mlynowski-KL's Score 8/10. Mermaids are strongly implied to be vegetarians

    TV Series:

    1. Dyesebel(2008)-KL's Score 10/10. EXCELLENT Filipino telenovela! It is clearly said and shown more than once that the merfolk do not eat fish and clealy can speak to sea creatures
    2. Disney's The Little Mermaid-KL's Score 10/10. The short-lived prequel series to the Disney animated classic once again shows strong relationships between merfolk and sea creatures, and the merfolk's diet consists of seaweed pasta, seaweed donuts, etc.
    3. H2O: Mermaid Adventures-KL's Score 8/10. Sure, the animation and voice acting aren't the greatest, but the fantastic ocean conservarion messages make up for that. Unlike the original H2O: Just Add Water, the mermaids can talk to sea creatures, are not shown eating seafood, and important eco issues such as plastic bags harming sealife and military sonar being damaging to cetaceans are dealt with

Lily, the mermaid, is friendly with animals and even plants!
um...what does she live on then? Haven't seen any nut- and fruit trees underwater?

    Anyway, great list!
Even as a 6 year old, I hated the lobster scene in Splash, it seemed so wrong (and Daryl herself, who is a vegetarian, hated it, she puked right afterward).

YESS!!! Glad I'm not the only one who feels that way, I wish they would've cut the scene from the script out of respect for her beliefs, maybe instead have Madison cause a scene in the restaurant because they served her friend

Something that makes me feel very optimistic about the future is that according to several reliable sources(nope not PETA, but legit newspapers' websites, the US Department of Agriculture, actual farming and fishing industry websites, and so on), statistics show that both red meat and seafood consumption are on the decline.
*Meat consumption in the US fell by 12.2% from 2007 to the end of 2012
*Beef consumption in 2012 fell to 57.3 pounds per person, compared to 94.4 pounds per person in 1976
*The average US consumer ate 14.6 pounds of seafood in 2012, down from 16.5 pounds in 2006, a drop of nearly 14 percent
*400 million less land animals were raised and killed for food in 2014 than 2007
*A survey showed 36% of Americans are open to the idea of plant-based eating
*In a survey of 2,000 US adults, 39% of participants said they ate less beef in 2013 than in 2012
*The Meatless Monday program is practiced in hundreds of public and private K-12 schools

I honestly predict that in a few decades almost everyone will be at least flexitarian. The idea that every single meal has to include meat is on the way out, as alternative products become more and more inexpensive and readily available, and more and more people are concerned about their health and the environment. A pretty good model for where I product the meat and seafood industry will be in a few decades is the fur industry. Real fur is still available, but it's VERY controversial and certainly way less common and accepted than it was a few decades ago, due to faux fur being readily available and anti-fur campaigns getting a lot of press attention.

Watching Mermaid Got Married, a 1994 Hong Kong mermaid movie with English subtitles, on YouTube. It's hinted that mers don't eat fish as the human male love interest suddenly became allergic to seafood, implicitly because he was under the mermaid's spell. The plot is somewhat similar to Splash, and the cast is quite attractive. I also need to watch Surplus Princess, a Korean drama that's a modern take on The Little Mermaid, and the animated series "Saban's Adventures of the Little Mermaid" from the early '90s, hopefully some of those I can add to my guide

Media Recommendations For Vegetarian Mers UPDATED
    Movies:
    (1) The Little Mermaid(1989)-In this Disney animated classic, humans are hated and feared for being fish-eaters and merfolk can speak to most sea creatures. KL's Score-10/10
    (2) Hans Christian's Anderson's The Little Mermaid(1975)-Fairly obscure Japanese anime film that is much more faithful to the original story than the Disney version. Merfolk seem to be able to speak to sea creatures and are not shown eating seafood. KL's Score-9/10
    (3) Barbie In A Mermaid Tale 2(2012)-Probably the best of all the mermaid-themed direct-to-DVD Barbie films. Mermaids can speak to sea creatures and are not shown eating fish. KL's Score-9/10
    (4) Magic Island(1995)-Cheesy live-action family film. The mermaid can speak to animals and even plants. KL's Score-8/10
    (5) Aquamarine(2006)-Entertaining teenage romantic comedy. Aqua mentions starfish talking to her and is not shown eating fish. KL's Score-8/10
    (6) Princess: A Modern Fairy Tale(2008)-Enjoyable made-for-TV fantasy film. A mermaid is a minor character who is shown eating only seaweed. KL's Score-8/10
    (7) Splash Too(1988)-Low-budget, made-for-TV sequel to Splash. Unlike the original Splash, Madison can clearly speak to sea creatures and is not shown eating seafood. KL's Score-8/10
    (8) Barbie In A Mermaid Tale(2010)-Decent direct-to-DVD Barbie offering. Mermaids can speak to sea creatures. KL's Score-8/10
    (9) Mermaid Got Married(1994)-Live-action Hong Kong mermaid movie. The mermaid clearly objects to eating fish, although she doesn't she doesn't seem to have a problem with eating clams. KL's Score-8/10
    (10) Barbie: The Pearl Princess(2014)-Decent direct-to-DVD Barbie movie boasts some nice animation. KL's Score-8/10
    (11) FishTales(2007)-Relatively badly made live-action film, but gets brownie points for featuring a mermaid who clearly says she's a vegetarian. KL's Score-7/10

    TV Series:
    (1) Disney's The Little Mermaid-Wonderful prequel animated series to the Disney classic. Like the film, merfolk can clearly speak to sea creatures and are even shown eating food such as seaweed donuts, seaweed pasta, etc. KL's Score-10/10
    (2) Dyesebel(2008)-Excellent Filipino mermaid-themed telenovela available online with English subtitles. The merfolk can clearly speak to sea creatures and do not eat fish. KL's Score-10/10
    (3) Dyesebel(2014)-Reboot of the Philippines most famous mermaid character with slicker production values, available only online without English subtitles. The merfolk can clearly speak to sea creatures. KL's Score-9/10
    (4) H2O: Mermaid Adventures-Animated reboot of the popular Australian series suffers from mediocre-at-best voice acting, predictable plots, and Flash-y animation, but features strong messages in favor of ocean conservation issues and unlike the original series the mermaids can speak to sea creatures and are not shown eating seafood. KL's Score-8/10
    (5) Jake and the Never Land Pirates-Cute Disney animated series aimed squarely at young children. A mermaid is a minor recurring character who can speak to sea creatures. KL's Score-8/10

    (2) Daughters of the Sea Trilogy by Kathryn Lasky-Excellent trilogy blends historical fiction with magic realism. Mermaids are said to be friendly with certain sea creatures, such a seals. KL's Score-10/10
    (3) Of Land And Sea by Lisa Dawn-My best friend's self-published novella manages to flesh out Hans Christian Anderson's original Little Mermaid story without directly contradicting it. There are occasional references to mermaids' "friends in the sea". KL's Score-10/10
    (4) Lost Voices Trilogy by Sarah Porter-Fantastic young adult trilogy that is darker and different from your typical mermaid novel. The mermaids live off of seaweed and small molluks, seemingly not eating finfish. KL's Score-9/10
    (5) Midnight Pearls by Debbie Viguie-Enjoyable retelling of The Little Mermaid. The merfolk are said not to eat fish. KL's Score-9/10
    (6) Disney's The Little Mermaid series by various authors-Out-of-print series of middle-grade novellas from the early 1990s fleshes out the lives of Ariel and her family and friends. Like the film, the merfolk can speak to sea creatures and do not eat fish. KL's Score-9/10
    (7) Mermaid SOS series by Gillian Shields-Cute children's chapter book series boasts adorable illustrations and great messages about ocean conservation issues. KL's Score-8/10
    (8) The Mermaid's Mirror by L.K. Madigan-Young adult mermaid novel is a bit slow-paced, but builds to some great world building and romance. Merfolk seem to live off such things as small mollusks, which they forage for in a very sustainable manner. KL's Score-8/10
    (9) Whatever After: Sink or Swim by Sarah Mlynowski-Little Mermaid-themed entry in entertaining middle-grade fractured fairy tale novella series. Mermaids are said not to eat fish. KL's Score-8/10

If anyone else has any recommendations to add to this list, by all means share . What qualifies to me as something worthy of being recommended to vegetarian mers specifically? Any movie, TV series, or book, preferably of at least some degree of quality, that features at least some of the following:
*Merfolk who are said to be vegetarian, or at the very least consider certain types of seafood, such as finfish, to not be acceptable to eat
*Merfolk who can communicate with, or otherwise have a special relationship, with marine animals
*Strong messages in favor of ocean conservation issues

Currently listening to Deep Blue, the first book in the Waterfire series, on MP3 audiobook. The mers live on elaborately described delicacies made of sea urchins, krill, and such but keep larger sea creatures as pets, although they don't seem to be able to speak to them. It even gave a good description of the destruction bottom trawling does to the ocean ecosystem.

    about 20 years.

I became allergic to nuts, almonds, soy and many fruits and vegetables over time though.
Now I'm hard pressed to find non-meaty things that have high iron and protein value.
Also aenemic due to frequent blood loss :/

If anyone has suggestions what I could use, I'm all ears.
