Hi so I don't know if there is a topic on this already, but given the recent rise in popularity of Mer swimming I see that quite a few Mermaid swimming classes/courses are now available throughout the world! Which is great news as I believe it will greatly help to popularize/make a bit more mainstream and respected the art of Mermaid swimming.

I thought there should be a resource that lists all the known Mermaid classes available around the world so I have put this list together. These are just the places I know of that offer group classes, I'm sure there are others as well as well as Mermaids that offer private lessons (see separate thread). PS To any enterprising Mermaids out there thinking of starting your own school I say go for it! Just make sure you've covered all necessary safety requirements as we need to keep the good reputation of Mermaid schools being safe! If in doubt on what is required to set up a school you could try contacting one of the existing schools in your country as they will understand the local laws better.

Pretty sure you need some kind of swimming and training qualifications to be able to teach. You can't just get up one day and say, "I am going open a mermaid school today at the pool"

Am also sure that Raina already covered some points on what and how to get the qualifications.

Though for some, its just easier to learn it off youtube. I know I did!

Actually, I'm one of many pro mers who give lessons without any swimming credentials. Though, I'm actually a teacher. I do workshops as opposed to classes. Adults and kids. Pretty sure Kariel is in the same boat.

I 100% agree. I think it's very important for Mermaids wanting to start a school to do their research first and ensure that their business is run as professionally as possible, especially with regard to concern for safety. if someone drowns at a Mermaid school or there is a negative publicity that could be quite bad. As Raina has said it may only take one Mermaid to do the wrong thing to ruin it for others. Not saying that to scare anyone but just that it is important to maintain a good reputation for Mermaid schools for people to respect them.

You have teacher qualifications. Which means you can teach and you already have the police check and working with children check. Australia has become very... what's the word... strict? In regards to teaching and holding classes of anything, especially so when children are involved. There have been recent law changes due to the amount of creeps that have infiltrated the schooling and child care systems.

That's what I'm getting at.

That one needs all these checks and stuff before you can open up your mermaid school. Even if one wanted to hold a mermaid class, you need to have all these in hand before you start approaching swimming centres.

There are two "merschools" in Bavaria and two more in Swabia which are well-known due to media exposure.

All the teachers are merely girls or young women with zero teaching or swimming coach credentials.
They just happen to like to work with children and bought a magictail.

Some of them make good money with it.
Considering how Germans really get off on credentials otherwise, this is a bit surprising, but hey.

I'd be all for it if some of the more ridiculous credential-demands (diving towers, looking at you) were dropped as well.

Hey mers, I'm trying really hard to launch a mermaid experience over here in the UK for adults, but I am having a freaking impossible time getting public liability insurance for the poolside and tailswimming part of it. I have spoken to twelve insurers, none of whom can cope with the concept. Any suggestions?

I'm pretty sure Mermaid Syrena is based in Singapore, not Malaysia. Its two separate countries, even though we are joined together by The Causeway, which is a long bridge.

There is No Ripples. They're based in NSW, though I'm sure exactly where. They do classes in Wollongong.
