Thread: Arizona Renaissance Festival Mermaid Tank

    Arizona Renaissance Festival Mermaid Tank

Has anyone else seen the absolutely gigantic tank and shell setup that the AZ Ren. Fest. just debuted? It's massive! I'd link some of the photos I found on instagram but my phone is being a butt. Anyways, it looks like a sideshow carnival setup rather than a ren fest. It's impressive, but it doesn't feel very medieval to me. The tails and tops by Finfolk are great though! (If a bit more Lisa Frank inspired than my liking.)

Which is what Raven and Tyler have been focusing on LOL.

the tails looks great. A saw some pics.

The tanks must have been really expensive. I've spoken with every maker on the market so far for trying to get our company one. Most tanks you see arent very tall because it is very expensive to go past 4ft tall for the acrylic. An extra ft of acrylic can cost upwards of 10k. When we were pricing out for something 8ft by4ft by 4ft it was 50,000$ American. This must a been so expensive. (and that is mostly the cost of the acrylic) But with this one maybe they modified a dunk tank or something because it's obviously stationary which is nice.

The whole renaissance faire thing eludes me! We dont have anything like that here. I have no reference but the single one I saw in Florida (BARF) in 2012. I dont understand where the festival as a whole gets that much money bahaha. Do they work like conventions?

It's a little more like a business. They sell stuff inside and shops pay rent etc.

I love the Sterling Forest ren faire in Tuxedo NY. A lot is set up to buy things - clothes, food, jewelry, armor, swords, chain maile, etc... but yeah, it kind of is like a convention in that you can dress up and attend in character, and there are lots of cast members and attractions there to facilitate the medieval atmosphere.

Aysun would be the on to ask, she works ren faires for a living!

We have one that comes around where I live every year, and I remember Kelda telling me she'd asked about mermaids one year but this one was strictly 'historically accurate' so the mermaids are a no go :/

The AZ ren faire is drowning in money haha, it's really popular here so they aren't tight on money. We (as in the AZ mer pod) also suspect the tails are owned by the faire and not the mers themselves.

According to one mer who went to the faire and talked to them, they're just actors hired by the faire because they have hook ups with Twig the fairy, and it was a closed audition (so basically who you know) and the tank isn't really that big. There's room for only one mer and the touches both walls when they're in it.

I was thinking that the tank looked a little thin, but I think that is kinda neat. I mean, it makes it so there can only be one mermaid in at a time, but that is pretty typical with tanks, no? It allows you to hold both sides so that you can keep yourself under easier. Just gotta ensure you're not too claustrophobic.
