I saw a black tail used in a fashion video and she was striking. I think it was a Mertailor.
I would love to have a black tail. Or an iridescent white tail.

I think the term that wouldn't bother anyone is "rare." What colors are rare to see in a tail? I don't think I've seen a pure white tail. My guess is that white might be more see through, so while it's a nice color (I'm all about winter white! And anytime whitel,) it's not a practical one.
I also notice that many mermen tend to lean towards greys, blacks and more earthy tones. Of course many choose bright colors too, but it seems they also choose natural colors more often then mermaids do.
It's also not often that I see a really red tail. Women usually love to wear red (the red dress, red bikini, and red lipstick have very intense feminine symbolism), so it's interesting that red is not common in tails. My theory is that mermaiding brings out the softer more girly feminine side, so pinks and bright flowery colors are often go tos. Though I would love to see a sexy vavoom Jessica Rabbit style tail!
It seems there is consensus that blue is one of the most common colors. I think most of us mermaids always love blue because it is the color of the ocean. It's one of my favorites for sure! But I wouldn't choose it for a tail because I see blue tails have a tendency to disappear into the blue of the water in photos. The contrast of pinks and oranges against the big blue is more dynamic.

my mertailor tail is black with gold & grey.
I have several white tails, 2 mostly black tails, and quite a few white-black striped tails
It's true you don't see many of those.
I've also never seen anyone besides me who was a watersnake (with no fluke), so I guess I made all the unpopular choices

I think the only colour of tail I haven't seen yet is solid skin-colour
I mean blended waists and stuff are pretty popular, but I'm talking the same skin-colour from waist to fluke tips.
But I think it could definitely look killer if done right
In the future, I think I'd really want an iridescent black tail
I forgot about this site: https://mermaidtailcollection.wordpress.com/
It is useful for seeing lots of different tails and you can search them by color, etc.

You're right, that is a rarity. I've seen a few fabric ones (maybe like 3 I think?). I've seen few latex ones too, but they weren't swimmable - they were full body suits (I guess they were fetish images, that was way back in the Seatails days). But no silicone ones that I've seen for sure.

I'm not a fan of the neon colours.. They are just not for me. I do like dark colours though
That's nice Since I am tanned, neon colours just won't suit me but they would suit my sister since she's really pale
Infrared and ultraviolet are colors outside of humans' visible spectrum.
Using colors outside the visible spectrum won't make the tail invisible. It would be the color of the substrate, so in the case of Dragonskin, it would be a milky whitish.
Also, using numbers in the place of letters is incredibly annoying. Save that shit for Twitter.
It's been my experience that neon colors look best on people with deeper skin tones. Pale people are overpowered by neon/flourescent colors.

her keyboard broke and that's why she's using numbers instead of letters.
I don't see a lot of pink tails. of course there's a few of them, I had one a few years back, but they're not quite as common as I expected.

I've always wanted to see someone in a 'see thought' or 'not pigmented' tail.
