I find the water doesn't go down the passage into my lungs at all when I flood my sinuses. It just stays in my head. Haha. But as Jaffa said it is a good idea to blow all of the water out of your nose and sinuses as soon as you surface otherwise you end up swallowing back a lot of that water and making yourself feel rather sloshy and unwell in the stomach! When you surface make sure your head isn't still tilted back because you choke a bit too! I once came straight up from a backflip for a breath and went backwards for another one with all of the water still there and it was not pleasant I tell you!
Also I wouldn't recommend letting your sinuses fill in any sort of water that could be particularly unclean or harbour bacteria etc.
If in doubt, just use a snorkel mask. The kids at my pool don't notice the mask much. Some parents have even called my snorkel mask, blinkers.
One even shouted it out loud, "Look! She's wearing blinkers!"
How freaking enraged I was when I heard that!!!

I use the Sinus saver nose plugs. They don't show up at all in videos. I was even debating making them look like a nose ring somehow.

I swear by SinusSaver plugs. I can't invert or blue bubble rings without my sinuses flooding. (A talent I just haven't been able to master)
SinusSavers make my life so easy. Go check out the review thread about them. I think they are about $15USD on Amazon
