So, being VERY satisfied with our efforts to create the most masculine, badass merman tail ever seen, Shell and I decided we wanted to top it. Bigger fluke (rapid instead of a foil), darker and even more intimidating coloring, and spikier fins. We are also moving away from silicone and latex, instead really enjoying the benefits of straight painted neoprene; lighter, quicker to dry, more vibrant paint, easier to get on, so many reasons. She looks even better underwater, I absolutely love the technique shell devised for painting scales. Her new tail for herself makes use of this technique even better. Only problem is, I have no idea at all what my next one will look like.

And, oh, I forgot to add: they are a hell of a lot cheaper too. Makes a big difference when you don't need all that silicone.

After a lifetime of dreaming and tails my mother made for me and after 6 years of doing research I finally had the guts to make my own tail.
This was a test photoshoot with the unfinished tail.

Celine that looks great. Is it painted neoprene, no silicone or latex? Looks like it....

Thank you, that means a lot to me :-). It's just regular neoprene and textile paint, then some silicone here and there, nothing special (it took me 2 months to finish it). I'm just a poor student so unfortunately I can't afford the beautiful, realistic tails that I've come across this forum so I was a little bit ashamed to show everybody my tail.

I personally prefer the looks of the neoprene tails because they are so much more artistic. Yours is definitely one of the more unique ones I've ever come across. Your tail is to die for, don't be ashamed of it!

Celine, don't knock your tail. Shell and I have decided to move away from silicone and latex on focus on painted neoprene. So many tails we admire, such as some of Hannah's, Linden's, Malena Sharkey's, Kariel, and StaySeas are painted neoprene and they are gorgeous. Not to mention they dry a hell of a lot faster, are lighter....and as spindrift said, the artistry shines through.

Yes, you're right and I'm a die hard Hannah fan, she is breathtaking. It's just, lately, I am getting a bit frustrated because I made 2 monofins already and they both snapped in two so I was getting mad at myself and now I bought a Finis Competitor but the size is smaller then the monofins I made so I had to make some adjustments and it's taking me forever. I'm getting so impatient because I want to swim in my tail :-p

We believe the obsession with super-realistic silicone tails is robbing mermaiding of its soul....for some it become more about having the "best tail" than anything else, which of course is highly subjective.
