As I was searching for a merfolk community I stumbled across your wonderful network and finally decided to join, introduce myself and get to know eeeeverything about mermaiding
I am US/German (and think my English became quite rusty, so please excuse my mistakes), learned 'normal' swimming before I went to school, have lived by the coast all my life until I was 21 and spent every second at the beach.
I always used to do several types of sports incliuding fencing, swimming and dancing until I got diagnosed with something (it's kind of private, so maybe I'll get back to that later) and had to spent some time in hospital as well (and did recover in case you were wondering).
My boyfriend owns a boat, and we do get to visit the 'beach' (it's a beach by the river Spree) a lot in summer. When I tried teaching him dolphin kick swimming last year, I unfortunately failed even though I am a better swimmer than he is. I woulnd't say I was any kind of pro anyway.
As I recently cut down working as an EMT fultime to only doing so if they really need someone to help out, and feel I am kind of losing my shape and fitness level, and also my physical therapist told me to restart some sport again to get rid of the pain in my back that occurred recently, I decided to engage in something new.
Why mermaiding?
When I was 5 years old, The Little Mermaid (1989) came out and I was fascinated ever since. I even had a knockoff Non-Barbie doll mermaid with bright red hair and a shiny shimmery tail- she was the only Barbie doll I liked, other from her I didn't like those or any other dolls at all and preferred playing with cars, planes, etc. and doing other things considered being 'boyish'.
Another aspect is I like the look and the femininity of mermaids and the grace of them (and merman), I love their floating hair (I love 'big' floaty things as I do for example love my swing dresses) and do wear a lot of wiggle dresses to enhance my hourglass form. Plus I am a pinup type girl, so I only wear dresses , skirts and do own only one pair of pants, so experimenting with looks, textures and colors is my thing.
Currently I am waiting for Mermaid Kat Shop tail to arrive. I am sooo excited!
The shop staff adviced me on ordering their teen size 3 as I am only 5'28'', and their big monofin (it's HUGE! in my opinion) although it says it's shoe size 8.5- 10.5 and I am a size 6.5- 7.5.
I hope they really are as adjustable as the staff promised they'd be.
I also think about attending a mermaiding starter class. There's one about 10 minutes from my house, but I am a little worried, I'll be the only 'crazy', 'silly' adult there being surrounded by little 6-10 year olds... On the other hand I think it's probably better to join one especially for safety aspects, so I think I probably will though.
