Finfolk's mythic tails are neoprene fabric base with sequin scales sewed on them, so it must be possible.

Wait so mythic uses sequins....They look so silicone unless sequin is a general term...That explains a lot though, they look so good.
Neoprene is by far the best material to work with in my experience as it's easy to repair and actually can be repaired, I'm not sure I'd trust any normal swim fabric tail to withstand a great deal of sewing for add on's.
Finfolk's Mythic line is resin scales, not plastic sequins.
I'm excited to follow this thread, though, since I have 4 FinFun tailskins!

I have 3 finfun skins and I'd love to use one to play around with!! Let me know if you find any info on adding stuff to the finfun fabric
For reference, I assume you can put sequins on them, since a few mers (though not common) use spandex as a base for Cartwrights.
(Forgive me for not reading the thread 100% that fateful 2am when I replied.)
My very first FinFun was one I modified myself. Since it was a custom size and the company is notorious for cutting to measurement instead of allowing for the 4-way stretch + fit of fabric underwater, I had to take it in. A lot. But I had some extra fabric that I cut a small dorsal out of.
I bought Lumiere's Halo Blue Gold since I thought it would look awesome. Turned out that the halo effect was a big No on spandex and all that was left was the gold glitter. Still fond of it, though.
Brynn's Celtic Green with Jacquard's Lumiere Halo Blue Gold, heat set with a flat iron (yes, really). I took a small piece of craft foam, cut it to scale size, and stamped a few scales here and there with the gold.

Some people do it, but I'm afraid it won't be very sturdy and it will rip quickly. Neoprene is a better base
